    Was surprised by how small it is irl. Quite different than images on the net. Thanks!

    Good clear and concise intro to the device, just what I was looking for, thanks.

    Hopefully now us bass players who prefer the much faster response of a class D amp can actually get a real and proper tube pre amp section without the massive cost and weight of a tube pre and power section. I think this would be the perfect combination of SS and Valve technology for a bass amp.

    The 6977 subminiature fluorescent indicator tube was used in this manner in some old battery tube radios.

    If the transistor came later, maybe this would be the result.
    Perhaps, even tube IC's if later than that.

    vox have just released a miniature guitar amp called mv50 based on these. love to get my hands on some.

      Actually there is, the sangaku headphone amplifier, prepare to loose 2k for it. But you can also build your own as a kit. P. Millet offers one. I'm preparing to build one of his boards.

      @@NearFarMediaDid you end up finishing that nutube headphone amp project? I'm just getting into this hobby and I'd like to make a hybrid incorporating Korg NuTubes and a popular dongle DAC.

    Pretty awesome component, maybe there is life in old technology!
    Any idea if this will be released internationally or where we could buy it from from abroad?

      I'm not sure actually. I would expect it to filter through to 'the usual suppliers' in time.
      If you send them an email, they might be able to let you know.

    The fact they call this a 6P1 worries me. The 6P1 tube is a tube out of China also known as the 6P1P in Russia; and is a pentode with the functional equivalent of a 6V6.
    This thing is a triode with less than a watt of dissipation, but it's called a 6P1.
    Makes no logical sense; I have to wonder what Korg was thinking when they called it that. That's going to cause a LOT of confusion amongst hobbyists.
    As far as tubes running on low voltages; I've run 12AU7 tubes off 12V; and I have a 6J1 based buffer/pre that essentially runs the tube on 60V (-30 on cathode and +30 on anode). I think this might find some usage when you want small low-power tube in the chain; but I don't see this replacing tubes or becoming a very popular option among actual tube guys.

    • @NearFarMedia
      @NearFarMedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If someone manages to install one of these into a standard tube socket to replace a 6P1 pentode without noticing the difference, I'll be impressed on a number of levels... :)

    Please help! I need to know, is there or is there not gas inside that tube? Why/How does it glow? Is that glow from gas, the filament or from a phosphor target?

    • @NearFarMedia
      @NearFarMedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a vacuum inside like a normal vacuum tube.
      There are small squares of phosphor inside that glow constantly when powered up, just like a VFD display in your VCR screen.
      The glow is constant though, and doesn't vary with the input signal at all.

      Vacuum tube should be "full" of vacuum...

    • @cda32
      @cda32 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure the phosphor coating is to encourage the release of ions under vacuum, it's not just "for show" but part of how it functions.

    To be fair, you barely even see amps with these.

    Thanks for this great little video. Guitar nerds should be excited about this. Vox already have something (they're owned by Korg). A new era of valve amps, combined with DSP - awesome (as they say)!

    Make sure you mount it on foam or rubber, to reduce the microphonics:

    ... Or embrace them, and make an electric triangle (ting!).

      Good question, it sold out here really quick too. When I went to have a look at maybe buying another a week later they were all gone...
      I'll have to have another look on my next visit.
      I would assume they would filter through to international suppliers in time...
      Otherwise, check this link (I have no affiliation with this seller).

    So what is the advantage of this technology? Why is it better than SS for headphone amp application?

    • @TERRAOperativeOriginal
      @TERRAOperativeOriginal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It gives the 'tube sound' but with much lower voltage and current requirements than a traditional tubes.
      Plus it looks cool too. :)

    • @MrTartlet
      @MrTartlet 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the thing. Then Vox (owned by Korg) did a demo of their guitar amp with Nutubes I couldn't say that it sounded all that good and tube-like compared to real tube amps.
      I'm just not sure it will be possible to achieve that tube-like sound (whatever that is) with this thing. And for the price like that it's just insane. So I just wanted to know if there is some other advantage of this technology over transistors.

    • @Metallion-ol8bc
      @Metallion-ol8bc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AnalRectum. You mean ancient tubes or valves, now they are cubes or rectangles with same sound than valves but at lower wattages, and also last way longer, it can't get any worse than that.
      We should name these power cubes intead of power tubes, l,o,l.

    The amplification factor of this device is only 14.5 - like a poor performance or faulty tube. I wonder what the current drive capability is...

    • @RobynTapps
      @RobynTapps 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      lol i have germanium transistors with better amplification that that XD

    • @johanhansson4574
      @johanhansson4574 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bu if you drive it with 9 volts the headroom is like zero so it would distort like fuck non the less....

    • @greenaum
      @greenaum 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably meant more as an effect, or something to build effects round, than an actual practical amplifier. We have transistors, there's no point in inventing "better" tubes. But interesting ones, certainly. Korg make electronic instruments after all, and musicians get all sentimental over vacuum tubes.

    • @effectrode
      @effectrode 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "there's no point in inventing "better" tubes". Well no one can accuse Korg of that. But the job of a triode tube is to amplify an electrical signal - if it can't do that then what use is it?

    • @johanhansson4574
      @johanhansson4574 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil Taylor well the point of tubes in guitar amps is distortion

    Do not. Take ecc81, ecc83 and try to compare. But just notice: it is not comparable at all. Just marketing B.S. and kinda fancy design. With such microphony, no future at all.

  • @ianaintsaying1625
    @ianaintsaying1625 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    These things are insanely microphonic making them pretty much useless.
