Thanks a lot for this outstanding video. I believe it is hard work to film in the desert but the result is mind blowing. All the best from Bavaria, German
Besten Dank!
Fantastic post. I always wanted to go here to see this. Looks very remote some locations. Nice to see some of the former Queensland Rail locomotives still in action for the FCAB. They are identifiable with their lower profile, due to their original loading gauge in Queensland. I love the fact that these beast are not muffled much. Hear the horsepower at play.
Jason Grandcourt Many of the locomotives has been upgraded with Q-tron and Q-Trac traction control computers, and all of them has barometric sensor to adjust the diesel mixture and peak power, that is why they almost doesn't smoke. My brother was the chief engineer of that project, I worked some time too on that. (FCAB)
Roberto Gandolfo.

Amazing video quality. Interesting subject. It's amazing what the harsh climatic elements do weather wise to the train paint over time. I think you had some seriously great natural scenery to work with but you definitely maximized the beauty of it. Hope you'll post more like this.
Hi Thomas, this is by far one of the best best best videos I´ve seen, unbelievable - like railroading on the moon, your camera work is excellent, congratulations! How difficult is trainspotting in Argentine/Chile etc just beside temperature, thin air ans language problems?????????????? Keep up the great work Oliver
Not a lot of botanical or human growth or development up at those altitudes. But then, not enough precip, either. If they had railroads on Mars, the scenewould probably look something like this (though more red). Thanks for the great and spectacularly scenic vid.
Nice! :-) The landscape actually reminds me a little bit like the lower parts of the Nanjiang line in South Xinjiang (China) between Tulufan and Yuergou... :-)
Beautiful rugged country down there in Chili. So much amazing geological features, offroading in a souped up 4x4 and a rock hounds paradise all rolled into one. I forgot to mention the largest astronomical observatory complexes in the world all built at nose bleed locations scattered in the Atacama desert. Sadly this cold loving Canadian can't take the brutal heat the Atacama is famous for dishing out.
Thanks! Regarding train frequencies: It depends on the railroad and the stretch. In 2012, when I shot the video: - FCAB, Cumbre Pass around 5-7 trains on each direction. - FCAB, border to Bolivia 1-2 trains on each direction. - Ferronor, Div. Almagro 2-4 trains on each direction. - SQM around 3-5 trains on each direction. As of today, only FCAB remains active, since SQM and Ferronor, Div. Almagro were destroyed after severe rainfalls. However, there seems to be some signs of life on the Ferronor lately.
@@SD40dash2XR thanks for your good explanation. If railway is needed , the concerned people will restore it soon because man is sensitive their interests. 🍀🍀
You stole my thunder! I was going to say that, if you didn't know it was physically and mechanically impossible, you could believe those trains were running on Mars.
All three lines shown in the video don't have any regular passenger traffic (SQM and Ferronor / Div. Almagro are shut-down/distroyed). FCAB has on some very rare occasions a passenger train out of Antofagasta for some kilometres.
Haga otro video pronto.
Awesome scenery! What about the lights that appear in the upper-front of the locomotive? Seems like the lights of an airplane. :))) Favorite video!!! 05:24... the landscape seems to be like on another planet!! Final question: weren`t bandits out there? =))))

They are not only looking old - they are old! These boxcab electrics where built 1928 by GE in Scenactady, NY.
Truly incredible footage! Amazing landscape! Thanks for sharing 😊
