I'm pretty sure his feelings is also controlled by the rules of the og novel(like ml at the start of the story), his is the hardest to break because he's the male lead of the ognovel.
Yes, cliff's feelings were also controlled but at the same time he knew that lize wasn't as pure and innocent as she appeared. He genuinely loved her and was obsessed to the point that he was willing to go to any extent for her satisfaction. But he never knew that lize was the auther and was this crazy (he never knew that she manipulated everyone and has killed 12 Ediths already). He just knew that she wasn't happy with our fl and ml sharing a happy and peaceful time together. So, he became her accomplice. But again in the novel it was mentioned at the end that after marriage cliff was never happy with lize and was fed up (annoyed) with her. They were also divorced and he remarried, whom he loved very much and was more happy than ever. Also he never hated Killian and was genuinely happy for his lovely lifestyle.
