  • John West tells Spooky Isles about an legendary paranormal investigation in Gladwish Woods in Sussex. Author Rudyard Kipling had told his friend, author and ghost hunter Robert Thurston Hopkins about an ill-feeling he had when he ventured into a woodland near his home. When Hopkins led an investigation into the woods, it revealed ghostly terrors. Find out more by watching this interview.

Stumbled upon this after reading over a page from my family's excellent old book 'Haunted Britain' which contains a photograph of Gladwish woods. It also mentions that "land development may soon spread a genteel veneer over the ancient ferocity and evil'. However, I found an old map online that marks Gladwish wood and, if cross referenced with the modern map, shows that the woods does in fact still exist!

Would be a good place to visit maybe, have you been there?

I like the interviews with John. He knows his stuff and tells it very clearly. Fascinating account. I wonder if the particles the apparition exploded into were physical and retrievable, or whether they were just a visual phenomenon? I would brave the chalk pits to check this place out but it’s a long way from NZ. I am a bit of a Kipling fan too, funnily I nearly bought a house in North Devon which had a pool that he used to swim in. He made great cakes too ( UK ‘dad joke’ 😀

Thanks Mark. I believe that the fragments of bone were a visual phenomenon. And yes, he did make great cakes! :)

Here's that old map you were too lazy to find:

Interesting name too, should be called Illwish woods. Liking the beard btw David. Does anyone know anything about the haunted Kilminorth Woods near Looe in Cornwall, while we are on the subject?

I don't know much about the Cornish haunting. I believe screams have been heard?

john west Have seen just one online article about it. Been there several times and tried to tune -in psychically. I can be very psychic but not always when I want to be. I got that a biker group dabbled in some form of magickal practice there and inadvertently manifested/ released some ‘primal forms’. Not really sure what ‘primal forms’ are but some sort of non-physical entities. Appropriately for Cornwall, one was a ‘longleggetty beastie’ like a white 15’ spindly spider-like creature. I got that they were harmless but scary. My ex went with me and she picked up some sort of Victorian military memorial parade. Both might be just red herrings though
