As of January 1, 2024, Steamboat Willie is in the public domain. This is the full short from Walt Disney Animation Studios. You now own this and can do whatever you want with it.
Animation has always been possible but it was incredibly tedious to make due to having to draw frame after frame by hand. Modern tools only help with limb movement and implied motion as well along with layering.
And this is just the beginning. Further, Looney Tunes, and also short films based on Mickey Mouse, and his entire team will be in the public domain. And, of course, Disney's first full-length cartoon, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, will soon enter the public domain.
Yeah. After a year of failure, they've finally lost the mouse (partially, though). As a Pixar fan who had always loved Mickey, it's quite sad really, considering the state of the company, but at least now we can do anything we want with character. (Imagine all of the parodies that would result.)

It had been so long, and Mickey felt the warmth of the embrace as he remembered all the times he had once shared with the man who had been like to him a father and a friend. Finally, the two pulled apart and Mickey looked up into the eyes of of the legend that had been so important in shaping the childhoods of so many generations. "Your time has come," said Walt, "you have done well." Mickey looked back in the direction of the unknown and felt a sudden twinge of uncertainty; what would he become? Would he bring joy, or darkness? "For so many years," said Walt, "you have brought joy into the hearts of generations under my watchful eye and leadership, but now it is time for you to step beyond and explore the potential inside you beyond even what I can give. Yes, there may be dark times, but there will also be so much more." Mickey could see heartfelt tears pooling in Disney's eyes as he spoke. " You have made me into the man that I was in life, and now it is time for you to spread some of that same hope and inspiration to the world in ways I could've never imagined. The whole world is yours now and the limits to what you can be are endless. Mickey my dear mouse, through all the years you've been what you are, you are now free; your time is now to become more than you ever could be." Mickey looked into the eyes of the great Walt Disney and felt the memories of the worlds they had shared together rushing through him. But now it was time for him to go. Mickey grabbed his hand and held it tight. "Thank you for making me into Mickey Mouse." Mickey said. Disney gave a gentle smile, "That was simply one step on your journey." And then Mickey released the hand of his creator, and turned to face the future ahead. Behind him Walt called out, "Remember, with all that lies ahead of you, you will always have a place amongst us to call your own." A home to return to, but not the only one, for now the whole world was his home. So, feeling the pitter-patter of his heart within his chest, Mickey closed his eyes and let out a deep breath... Then, the clock struck midnight, and Mickey took his first step into the Public Domain.

Product of its time. Cartoon violence used to not mean anything to the characters back then. You could have a house dropped on you and walk it off like nothing happened if you were in these cartoons.
Frankly it’s a little neat to see how he used to be a bit self serving and kind of a jerk. After growing up on nice guy Mickey, seeing him disgruntled and try to make himself feel better at the expense of others, well, it’s interesting
Donald became more popular than Mickey in WW2 cause he was more of a wild jerk and Mickey at that point was too much of a bland nice guy. Mickey with an edge did give him a bit more personality.
Walt Disney himself was not the gentleman in reality you think he was. He was sexist and misogynistic even to his own daughter. This was one of the reasons he gave his brand and company to his son despite his son not being as capable of efficiently managing it. Walt was also a heavy smoker.
Fun Fact: This is actually the FOURTH Mickey Mouse cartoon to have entered the Public Domain! The other three are: "Minnie's Yoo-Hoo" "Mickey's Surprise Party" (An ad for Nabisco products) And "The Mad Doctor" (A.K.A. "The one where a mad scientist kidnaps Pluto, then sings about grafting his head onto the body of a chicken...and scared me when I was ten.") 😅
What about the other ones like some Donald cartoons, some Goofy cartoons, some Silly Symphonies cartoons and let’s not forget about the other Mickey Mouse cartoons that reached the public domain?
I got it! Maybe we make him some kind of interdimensional warrior, fighting the forces of darkness with the magic of the light, fighting off Disney villains, and spiky-haired anime antagonists! Now, we just need to figure out what kind of weapon to give him...
What a very nice way to start the year by this being in the public domain. Brings back nostalgic memories from the Walt Disney Animation Studios logo that included Steamboat Willie.
I think you mean an official suicide mouse movie Because Steamboat Willie mickey is technically classic 1928 mickey And guess who suicide mouse is, a classic 1928 mickey
Even though Steamboat Willy is in the public domain... this is still and always will be an incredible part of walt disneys history... I just hope no one turns this beloved short into a horror movie like they did with Winnie the Pooh
This is truly the beginning of a new era for the iconic mouse. I already said this in a few other places before, but I want to mention it again here. Can you imagine WB taking advantage of this and giving us another moment of Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny together at the same time? Like that scene in Roger Rabbit but give Mickey his Steamboat Willie design.
I now can just peacefully listen to this and uploading it literally everywhere without having any worries about getting sued by Disney. Great. **Whistles**
The fact this has caused so many to pay attention to this short whereas before people might not have cared besides Disney adults shows that this will still score big for Disney. Especially when people try to extract Mickey Mouse and get slapped with trademark infringement lawsuits.
So cool to see this short at it's fully now legal on You tube, I know most people will just focus on that the Disney company can't stop this and many will use this for who knows what....as an animation fan, I just want to appreciate finally watch this fully, I only have watch clips never the full short, and appreciate where everything start for Walt Disney himself is a piece of history, I think deserve to be share all over the globe.
Now that Steamboat Willie is in the public domain, I wonder what kind of crazy projects people are going to make out of it? I hope someone makes a video game for it, preferably a non-horror video game. Also, it occurs to me that the version of Pete that shows up in this short is also now part of the public domain.
Someone With a big heart and love for Mickey should make a movie or a show that shows Mickey as a Character and not as: Hey i'm Mickey Buy my stuff and go to Disneyland.Mickey Deserves Character Development,Love you Mickey Mouse❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
when you think about it, this short really is symbolic of the whole public domain thing. disney didnt create "do your ears hang low" and yet the short is largely about mickey remixing it by adding new instruments and putting a spin on an established work. funny how that works isnt it
It's funny to see how many people completely forgot that Disney has basically weaponized every single trademark you can think of with Mickey mouse. We'll never be able to use Mickey in our own creations without navigating around the legal mind field that is Disney's trademarks with the character.
I don't know about you guys, but I have a very strong theory that Walt Disney really didn't like Cats....and anyone who watches old Disney films and shorts knows perfectly well what I'm talking about.😂😂

Make him a helpful NPC. It’ll work well.
it feels so surreal that anyone can do anything that they want with this entire animation.
Pretty unique but a great way to start the year, animation has come so far and it sucks that its been getting treated poorly recently
Yeah, animation and the people in the animation industry deserve so much more respect
Kinda ironic that at the rise of ai art, Disney loses it's foundation in the animation world.
And now with this it’s even worse
its crazy how back then a cartoon with sound was a selling point
"Remember to feed the cat"
"Yeah, sure" 5:15

5:41 Mickey being a little too wild with that one 💀💀💀💀💀
nah bro imagine how the goat feels 😭
It was all fine until Mickey fucked it up.
@@SwankemasterSupreme What about swinging the cat around?
@@Gatorboy5678 that was also Mickey.

This was a way better way to announce the situation than doing an usual valiski video. I loved it!
he did do a usual one a few days before
At least this iconic piece of animation will be preserved by fans of Mickey Mouse and Disney fans
I doubt that
@@kitkitsune6570How do you doubt that?
It amazes me how cruel and downright abusive and mean Mickey is to everything and everyone in this short.
Product of its time. Cartoon violence used to not mean anything to the characters back then. You could have a house dropped on you and walk it off like nothing happened if you were in these cartoons.
This is back then after all
Frankly it’s a little neat to see how he used to be a bit self serving and kind of a jerk.
Fun Fact:
This is actually the FOURTH Mickey Mouse cartoon to have entered the Public Domain!
The other three are:
"Minnie's Yoo-Hoo"
"Mickey's Surprise Party"
(An ad for Nabisco products)
And
"The Mad Doctor"
(A.K.A. "The one where a mad scientist kidnaps Pluto, then sings about grafting his head onto the body of a chicken...and scared me when I was ten.")
😅
Exactly
Which will all be receiving their own horror films soon.
Mickey's Surprise Party is NOT in the public domain - somebody discovered they did actually renew the copyrights for it.
Whoops!
My bad, then.
😅
What about the other ones like some Donald cartoons, some Goofy cartoons, some Silly Symphonies cartoons and let’s not forget about the other Mickey Mouse cartoons that reached the public domain?
That mouse sure seems silly, I would expand on him as a character
Same
agreed @@lightinggirl10
Mickey used to b so much of a trickster
@@Plumpus3545 same ol mick
I got it! Maybe we make him some kind of interdimensional warrior, fighting the forces of darkness with the magic of the light, fighting off Disney villains, and spiky-haired anime antagonists! Now, we just need to figure out what kind of weapon to give him...
This has so much more life to it then most animated stuff today tbh
I mean it is old
Crazy considering how much technology and knowledge we gained over the years in regards to art and animation since when this was made.
All thanks to Ub Iwerks
@@DiamondDepthYT yeah
Steamboat Willie being in the public domain is certainly a way to start a new year
What a way to end the 100th year. Something the fans would actually appreciate and get good use out of
Fun fact: This is one of the first cartoons with sound!
What a very nice way to start the year by this being in the public domain. Brings back nostalgic memories from the Walt Disney Animation Studios logo that included Steamboat Willie.
Thank you public domain!! Happy 2024
This being public domain is a better 100th anniversary than Wish and disney didn't even want it to happen
What a beautiful middle finger to the corporate’s at Disney, and a great way to remeber the hard work of the animators all these years later
Can't wait for someone to make a live action horror film based on this
Steamboat killie
I think you mean an official suicide mouse movie
Because Steamboat Willie mickey is technically classic 1928 mickey
And guess who suicide mouse is, a classic 1928 mickey
mickey mouse: blood and hot dog
Mickey Mouse in : The Steamboat Massacre
I can.
Even though Steamboat Willy is in the public domain... this is still and always will be an incredible part of walt disneys history... I just hope no one turns this beloved short into a horror movie like they did with Winnie the Pooh
I'd like to see some cartoons honor it as a parody rather than have it turn horror.
there is already a horror game that got announced and is being released
@@TheFairyGodDog IGN trailer.
@@TheFairyGodDog Really though, I'm more excited for Mouse.
Too late
It is inevitable
This is truly the beginning of a new era for the iconic mouse. I already said this in a few other places before, but I want to mention it again here. Can you imagine WB taking advantage of this and giving us another moment of Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny together at the same time? Like that scene in Roger Rabbit but give Mickey his Steamboat Willie design.
I now can just peacefully listen to this and uploading it literally everywhere without having any worries about getting sued by Disney. Great. **Whistles**
This is the best first video you could’ve made on 2024, hats off to you
Damn,Mickey actually committed a lot of cartoonish animal abuse on these animals back in the day.kkkkkk😂
He’s a little goofy
@@Plumpus3545we don't talk about goofy
@@Brixster We can talk all about goofy as long as we don't talk about Goofy
The fact this has caused so many to pay attention to this short whereas before people might not have cared besides Disney adults shows that this will still score big for Disney. Especially when people try to extract Mickey Mouse and get slapped with trademark infringement lawsuits.
They won’t get copyrighted if they use the Mickey mouse from steamboat willie
Historic moment in history ❤ Its been nearly 96 years and this still lives on
All this talk about the public domain, but can I just say, the animation for this is genuinely funny.
5:12 Mickey commits animal abuse💀💀💀💀
My grandmother waw born in 1936 and she still has a copy of this
On vhs?
So cool to see this short at it's fully now legal on You tube, I know most people will just focus on that the Disney company can't stop this and many will use this for who knows what....as an animation fan, I just want to appreciate finally watch this fully, I only have watch clips never the full short, and appreciate where everything start for Walt Disney himself is a piece of history, I think deserve to be share all over the globe.
The full thing was already up on yt for quite a few years before it entered public domain
4:56 I love how the duck is just viving to the music
🦆
For now...
Now that Steamboat Willie is in the public domain, I wonder what kind of crazy projects people are going to make out of it? I hope someone makes a video game for it, preferably a non-horror video game.
Also, it occurs to me that the version of Pete that shows up in this short is also now part of the public domain.
There’s actually an upcoming FPS inspired by this style. Pretty much the developer waited for this moment to come.
7:31
Love that laugh 😂
It sounds a baby laughing 😂👶
You gotta love that as soon as it became 2024 everyone jumped on board to upload this classic short, even if it's like 1 in the morning or something 😂
We live in a time where both Oswald and Mickey Mouse are technically in the public domain.
90 years later,still a classic.

Someone’s gonna make a Thriller out of this.
It’s almost guaranteed
Someone With a big heart and love for Mickey should make a movie or a show that shows Mickey as a Character and not as: Hey i'm Mickey Buy my stuff and go to Disneyland.Mickey Deserves Character Development,Love you Mickey Mouse❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Finally, the mouse’s rage of terror has come to an end
The Internet is gonna have Fun with *SteamBoat Willie*
For better, or for worst.
when you think about it, this short really is symbolic of the whole public domain thing. disney didnt create "do your ears hang low" and yet the short is largely about mickey remixing it by adding new instruments and putting a spin on an established work. funny how that works isnt it
I used to watch these shorts over and over again on dvd, its so nostalgic :)

I wouldn't mind Vail uploading more public domain cartoons down the line.
It's funny to see how many people completely forgot that Disney has basically weaponized every single trademark you can think of with Mickey mouse.
We'll never be able to use Mickey in our own creations without navigating around the legal mind field that is Disney's trademarks with the character.
I think sometime in the 2030s we will see Mickey become public domain
but we can use this mickey!
What a way to start the new year!
I actually had never seen this before, it's very cute :) my favorite part is when mickey performs animal cruelty over and over again
THANKS GOODNESS THIS WASN'T FLAGGED AS JUST FOR KIDS;
BECAUSE NOW WE CAN ADD THIS TO PLAYLISTS & TYPE COMMENTS ON THE VIDEO!!
The portrayal of chewing tobacco and animal abuse probably justifies this though.
@@Megacooltommydee THANK GOODNESS IT DOES!!
I don't know about you guys, but I have a very strong theory that Walt Disney really didn't like Cats....and anyone who watches old Disney films and shorts knows perfectly well what I'm talking about.😂😂
Prolly cuz felix the cat being one of mickey’s main competitors but thats just a theory i guess
I have a hard time believing Warner and Disney/Sony are just gonna let Batman Spiderman & Superman go Public Domain when their time comes.
History continues to repeat itself
To be fair they always get parodies
Man, I can't believe this. I'm psyched about Disney's 100th anniversary and all but to see its mascot in the public domain now. Did not see this coming.
He just starts terrorizing every animal he sees lmfao
i cant get over how much i love this era of animation. rubber hose is so cool
Other uploads I saw exclude the part where Mickey separates the mother pig from her piglets. Thanks for including the full, uncensored version.
We can now witness this amazing piece of animation history anywhere
Only now is when I realize that Pete is actually a cat

Now such a concept is possible.

I can’t believe you animated and produced this yourself!
It really looks like it’s from 1928 nice replicating the art style
