You should give the Torrent mod a try on a Hof laser, especially for those secondary breaks and if you ever have someone else with you. It greatly increases the speed at which the charge bar fills, thus making rocking breaking faster and decreasing your chances or either over charging or letting the charge drop off.
I've thought about it. Yea it decreases time, but it also means I HAVE to get out of the front laser to go access it and that all takes time. I can make the front laser sub fracture most pieces with ease.
The surge increases overall laser power by 50%. It doesn't so anything to keep the laser in the green zone, you have to control the power to keep it there

i don't really understand when you press the activate on surge. what does it do to keep your meter in the green better?

I can't activate mods; Tried 1, 3 and 7, nothing
Try alt 1 2 or 3, make sure they are active mods and installed
module buttons have changed it is not left alt and 1 2 3 NOT num pad!
