  • An overnight trip to Zeke's Hut in Hihitahi Forest Sanctuary. The walk was a few hours among some amazing Hall's tōtara and pāhautea/kaikawaka with patches of snow underfoot and some awesome bird life. The small modern hut made for a comfortable night.

That view from the top of the ridge was great.

Thanks Peter, that's one part of your video I didn't get an idea of with your weather 😂 glad to have checked it out. Saw your hut book entry. Cheers

Agree, mature kaikawaka is pretty spectacular! Ruahine Corner hut is another good spot for it.

Cheers for watching. Another place I'd love to check out someday. What route did you take to get there?

Ive been wanting to go into Zekes Hut for nearly a year now. After watching this video of yours, I've decided to do it within the next month. I love how you focus in on the small things, i.e Cicada skins, snow and ice on plants. I have yet to watch your 'Plant & Tree ID in Native NZ Bush' Vid.
The only 'Issue' for me with going into Zekes is, where to leave my car, as the only parking is on a main road. Where did you park your car? Did you have any problems?

Awesome, have a good trip! The first section isn't the best - stay to the left of the farm bog after the bridge, then you've got a few mud pits and a tight steep climb but after that it's good. Dropping down to the hut just follow your nose down the open grass slip and markers pick up again. Thanks for your appreciation of the detail!
Yes, had to leave the car basically just pulled off the highway against the farm fence. Thankfully it was ok and every other trip report I've seen mentioned no issues
