Next time you weld vertically, vertical up for structural welds. Vertical down pulls contaminants from the metal down in the weld puddle. As you near the bottom theres an increase in contaminants. Vertical up keeps any contaminants in the area they originally were in so much less concentrated!

Plus you get better penetration due to the heat traveling vertically.
