You can use paint in your cut design that will attract the lights, it should also help with the amount of lights you use because some time's more isn't actually needed. The paint can be a mix of color's and with a blinking lights on a random time spread could make it pop more bringing it more to life, Glossier finishes reflect light and attract the eye or glitter mixed with glue... Just a thought.
You probably won't see this and/or it's stuid but if you wanted the plates to spin separate you could do a short stretched elastic band so that it would have semi-controlled movement to seem more realistic. If you did that you may have to put each strip on each plate separately which I'm sure would be difficult so I'm not sure. I'm obviously not this super awesomely smart about mechanical stuff
Looks awesome:) might want to upgrade to a smaller mcu, maybe one of the Bluetooth or wifi linked ones since they're so cheap these days( a few bucks to maybe 10). And you could of course use neopixel type leds to cut down quite a lot on your control section if desired .
I think a cnc would have done the trick. Maybe lighting out from the holes in the middle might give you more brightness and the effect you're looking for?
Hey will if you happen to remake this a good way to get twice the depth would be putting a mirror or some reflective surface where your hand touches, you could make it much crazier by adding in a 2 way mirror on the front as well.
I don't know if you've seen, but you can have like a motor spinning lights that are programmed to light at specific times generating the Dr. Strange spells. I think those look much more like a spell, though it could be very hard to make.
I think EL wire would have been really good to freshen up the lines instead of the LEDs on the outside and would get rid of the black around the acrylic
maybe notching the edge of the acrylic so your small leds could fit in. it would keep them spaced how you like and sort of keep them on the edge. plus your $15 wouldn't be wasted.
I know it's an old video, but you could always return to it. Cut the disks in half and run fiber through the design, seal the halves together, continue over and over. Now you use less lights. Also consider adding a dark reflective tape to the outside to condense lighting.
I know I'm really late but for surface finishing maybe coat the acrylic in a relatively strong tape, laser cut/engrave through the tape, and then lightly sandblast it without blasting through the remaining tape. After that then remove the tape and viola. Maybe?
I have seen something similar to this at a con once. I also have seen those programmable devices that spin a straight thing with LEDs to create a Similar effect.
His is absolutely genius. You rock. One question though. Why don't you put more sheets with different designs and light the leds around them alternatively so that the design "changes" for someone looking at the disks?
William Osman that's called extruded acrylic, they melt and don't mark well. Love the 80w laser machine. I have a 40w myself. You won't find cast acrylic in stores. A 1/4 inch thick 12x12inch sheet crosts usually $12-13. Thinner and bigger sheets are cheaper. It's also more rigid as well.
This is an older video and you may not check the comments but..... if you ever did revisit it, channels in the discs for EL cable to be run through? Would have a more polished look as it would be a consistent light source in a circle for the etching to pick up... Sorry, I can't suggest where to use tape. There is probably somewhere.... maybe if the centre disc turned on a spindle that is part of the handle/where your palm is when the strap is around the back of your hands and fingers are holding the outer rim. Anyway, I just saw this video. I've been going through your older stuff :) (videos, not your actual stuff... that sounds stalker'y)
Side-lit laser-etched acrylic is exactly what I had planned. (Great minds think alike, eh?) I wasn't going to go as far as using multiple acrylic plates and LED strips, but I figured one thick piece of acrylic with a different pattern etched on each side would still provide a bit of the same 3d effect. You could also try to program the LEDs to switch between orange and green (the latter if you also have an Eye of Agamotto prop to go with it). Good job!
I have a idea if you ever revisit this project! You know those led fans that you can display images on? I wonder if it would look cool to layer a couple of those things and display the spell imagry on.
3:02 Ah the Prusia I3. I, too, have made the mistake of buying that printer, then proceeded to dump an additional $100+ into "fixing" it, while it is currently sitting next to me, broken.
What does it look like if you etch a design in acrylic with the focused beam (for depth) and then etch over the exact same design with a less focused beam to widen the light diffusion? And, would that technique create a more curved cut, or just a stair-step in depth?
oh yes there is a bunch of different types, the type in particular directd light is a way that it makes any imperfection glow. I will find the name for you and post a link, I love your videos, and would love to contribute in any way i can
