Misery is a 1990 American psychological thriller film directed by Rob Reiner, based on Stephen King's 1987 novel of the same name, starring James Caan, Kathy Bates, Lauren Bacall, Richard Farnsworth, and Frances Sternhagen about an obsessive fan who holds an author captive and forces him to write a story.

The 90’s was such an amazing decade for Movies, because the decades after the 90’s were not worth a spit for movies.

I don’t know if you agree but television series reached a peak around the late eighties and nineties in my opinion- any number of top series all produced around the same time.

The 2000s and 2010s had some gems

Good film. Kathy Bates deserved her Oscar. The legs broken again scene was cringey to watch.

She cuts off his thumb with an electric knife in the book.

I always thought this was one of the best book to movie adaptations. And agreed, Kathy Bates earned her Oscar for this movie.

This adaptation was brilliant. I tried to read the book after seeing the film and didn't finish it out of boredom. Probably because the performances in the movie were unforgettable. What I find with King is that he has some great ideas but the books are stuffed full of long-winded filler, whereas some of the adaptations get to the raw meat of it. Even so, The Stand unabridged (over 1000 pages, paperback) really got my attention on reading it.

Yeah I agree I like Stephen kings book but the movies get straight to the point!

In an interview, King stated that Annie was his relationship with "dope". It was his biggest fan and never wanted to leave him.

Really good film, one of the best psychological horror/thrillers - edge of your seat stuff. All the cast were great including James Caan.
I wonder if 10 Cloverfield Lane took inspiration from Misery?

Fantastic job on the review for a classic thriller that I do have to pick up on blu ray sometime?

It’s a very ‘adult’ film for an eight year old I’d say.

Richard Dreyfuss,Robert Deniro, and Jack Nicholson turned down the Paul Sheldon role because they weren't brave enough to deal with all the physical and emotional pain the character deals with and goes though. James Caan is quite brave for accepting the role.

Great film. Anyway, imagine this movie was about a crazy, obsessed Silent Hill fan that always wanted a better ending to the Silent Hill 2005 movie and they kidnap the screenwriter who screenwrote that very movie to rewrite the Silent Hill 2005 movie with a better ending than the one that we got.

I feel like hardly anyone gives James Caan credit. For one thing, he spent 15 weeks in bed straight, to such an extent that he got hung over. All of that just to play Paul Sheldon. And the amount of characters considered to play Paul before James Caan is crazy. Also, in audition to Anjelica Houston, Bette Middler was considered to play Annie.

I’ve read that after Stand By Me Rob Reiner really wanted to make IT, but the studio didn’t want to spend a lot of money so this got made instead. I sure would have liked to have seen how his version would have turned out, especially in light of how shitty the recent version was.
