I was curious mainly to hear Oak, cause I know Josh's voice is gigantic and I had already seen Dave kill it emotionally despite not having the same vocality. I think Oak was the most complete Pierre in terms of acting and singing, and I'm saying this as someone who basically sees Pierre as Josh, my god I wish there was a clip cause that was so intense even with just the audio. Lovely. Idk about Scott, he's great but I found his big movements take a bit away from the solemnity of the moment
Hey! I know it’s been 2 months but I recently found a short clip of Oak’s performance and was reminded of this comment! Here’s a link if you’d still like to see it: th-cam.com/video/mxV8zOBWsyU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=e4HdHZlWGGrXMbkc
Other reasons spoiled Oak's performance for me. I think Dave does justice to the song in a way many people don't expect. To have it be more emotional, and it feels like Pierre in the book singing it.
Josh will always be Pierre to me. The first recording did not do his voice justice. I heard it live and it was amazing. I just don't care for Dave Malloy as an actor/singer as brilliant as he is. Scott is not bad, and I like Oaks version more than I thought I would.
this is my favorite thing josh groban has ever sang (except his own name in crazy ex girlfriend). It gives me SHIVERS. they must have written this song just for him bc it lets him do amazingly everything his voice is best at. Possibly the most thrilling 11 o'clock male ballad performance of all time, with apologies to Dougie and Midnight Radio
dave malloy's version hits different. something about hearing it straight from the writer, i'm not sure. he connects to the material in a different way where even though his acting and singing doesn't seem like technically dazzling, not really, it is actually felt, and comes across as genuine desperation and then, grace. i feel the music more with him. second place was okieriete. i'm sorry but josh's voice is too pretty by half to be a genuine fit for this role, and i know this song was written for him and all, that's great, do it with the pops. but then he got it on broadway and u can't have it both ways i guess. wouldn't that be a cool world where an unknown writer could take their work to broadway on merit and authenticity fuck the haters...? not this world but,,, a cool one
theyre all so good and bring a different flavor to the song. i personally adore josh’s version, but oak’s voice is like butter and so gentle
