  • Walt Disney and artist Mary Blair meet with Dr. Jules Stein and his wife Doris to create a ceramic mural that would grace the examination room entrance at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. Walt Disney suggested a mural be made, instead of a simple monetary donation. With the talent of the amazing Mary Blair, Disney artists made it happen. This 16mm educational film gives a step-by-step account of the design and construction of this unique ceramic mural.

Marvelous idea--and I'll bet that the artists often thought that "this was for the children"...imagine a little child with sight challenges going through that door and coming out, able to see more clearly one day. I just love how Walt and the Steins used art and color and joy to create a more welcoming atmosphere than the usual clinical sterility. This was truly inspiring. I am so glad you shared it with us...I've never seen this before and in truth, didn't even know about it. And Mary Blair is awesome! Her humility in allowing art students to help--amazing. Did anyone else cringe when Walt picked up that finished tile???? The WORK that went into this mural is astonishing. Time well spent, I'd say. Very, very uplifting!

Mary Blair was one of the best Disney artists out there, I've seen multiple examples of her art made for the classic films and I could look at them for hours.

@@saintsheepy6682 no discussion of art in the Disney parks is complete without spending significant time talking about her genius! To this day, her work on Three Caballeros (La Posadas segment) is my most favorite.

Something about that whole 1964-1966 era for Walt just felt like one big victory lap. He didn't know it, neither did we, but it was really one huge era for the company.

1967? This may well be one of Walt's last on-camera appearances.

Mary Blair is my favorite artist! Great documentary! I had no idea she did a mural for the Jules Stein Eye Institute. I guess it also gave her experience to do the new Tomorrowland murals at Disneyland and the Grand Canyon Concourse mural at the Contemporary resort at Disney World. Had no idea it was so complex to create those. Thanks for sharing!
