@@pranavflame I figured it out, it's called a handpan!
These seem to come in different scales; any idea what this particular handpan's scale is?
@@AllDayHockey Today people call these instruments Handpans but that's because the original Swizz inventors who called their instrument "Hang" were very picky on who they sold their instruments to. So the market was bigger than what the inventors could/wanted to fill, so the more general "Handpan" was coined to market versions of the instrument that wasn't sold by the Swizz inventor couple. I hate how some people were trashing his videos for not being real magic, when in truth, this is a modern reinvention of classic movie magic.
I love the fact that he doesn't call himself a magician
That's pretty humble considering how much work he puts into his vids
I mean, how many people would seriously consider themselves a magician if they were him?
Well I mean, he's technically not a magician. He explains why pretty clearly. Magicians like David Blaine and others use live, in-person slight of hand and trickery to perform actual live shows. Zach is simply using CGI and camera tricks edited in post. Not that Zach isn't extremely talented and doing incredible things, but the two are not comparable in my opinion.

A theory piggybacking off of Wren’s is that there were ladders being moved inn and off position throughout the shot, but the paint and ladder is green/blue, so that way it is even more seamless
Imagine showing this to people in like. The middle ages. Their heads would explode
black magic is their answer to everything
Even showing these to someone twenty or thirty years ago would have blown some minds.
@lance turley True but the mental image of medieval people scrambling around going "WITCH CRAFT" is amusing to me. Since a lot of the time folks nowadays have the same reaction but in a much more comical way without the burning people at the stake part.

@@nvmre3612 the handpan? Yeah
4:03 Zach and the ladder's shadow colors don't match 4:07 shadow colors do match
My theory:
The ladder is projection mapping, but the visible one is missing part of it, so when Zach walks up to the wall, he spray paints in green, which would later be chroma keyed out to reveal a duplicate projection mapped ladder but with the missing piece, as well as clean footage of the wall before he spray painted (I am assuming he used some form of complicated camera rig to match up the movement perfectly, maybe adding some extra 'handheld' camera movement in editing) but when he reaches down to put it back, the motion hides an EXTREMELY well done clean cut or something like that, to add a real ladder, and the full projection-mapped ladder is removed in editing, so you can't see the green spray paint (or maybe they just washed it off) and after he goes up it around here: 4:15 the camera rig/in editing makes the camera wiggle into place while quickly transitioning back to the projection mapped ladder, as Zach grabs onto a rope or something which then pulls him up just in time for the security guard to do his bit, before the camera goes back to Zach climbing over the roof. And I assume the parts where Zach and the guard are both in the shot, they're separate elements.
So it might have been this with some extra editing to make everything seamless, or maybe I'm COMPLETELY off XD

Ladder scene breakdown theory?
This visual trick is actually shot in a non linear fasion to make it work. Our brains are so used to absorbing media from start to finish. The breakdown of this trick was done in 3 parts and rearranged in post production to make this effect.
Part 1: after the ladder had finished being painted if you look at the bottom of the ladder, or the portion of the ladder with the concrete ground as the backdrop, you can see that there is a real ladder there as Zach's legs cross over the painting of the ladder. Part 1 of this shot starts with the real ladder in place, Zach climbing up to paint the heart and finishes with the guard running towards Zach as he runs up the ladder and zach's body moves out of the camera's line of sight. This setup also provides the visual representation of what would need to be painted in later shots, ladder and ladder shadow.
Part 2: Zach painting a 3D visual illusion of the ladder and shadow on a 2D plain, wall and ground. This shot starts with Zach finishing the last part of painting the ladder and finishes where part 1 begins.
Part 3: guard running towards Zach only to find that the ladder was but drying paint, camera angle adjusted to make the ladder look like it was there from the painted visual illusion created. This shot starts at the end of part 1 and ends with Zach already waiting at the top of the building halfway hanging off the side of the ledge to give the viewer the illusion he had climbed up the entire wall.
In post production the order they sequenced these shots for the viewer was Part 2, Part 1, Part 3 to create this effect.

Ok
The ladder breakdown: (whew, ok, this one is simple in concept, difficult in planning & execution) it’s mostly layered takes, projection mapping, & timing. This has to be shot quickly with the use of outside lighting - changing shadow casts. The girl, partial ladder, and entire red balloon are what's actually painted. Here we go..
(Ladder 1) The first scene pulls the shot from post-ladder paint, we’ll call this ‘Ladder 2 map’) after mapping out each of the camera placements and a 'sketch' of where the actual ladder (AND shadows) will be placed - this is inserted into the first scene and edited in to make it look like it's already existing in reality. When Zack is spraying, it's actually just removing a masking layer of the ‘Ladder 2 map’).
When Zack bends down to grab the red paint, he pauses, real black ladder moves in, ‘Ladder 2’ is mapped for first scene and the 'Ladder 2 map' is then removed, he then walks up it to paint the balloon (another masking layer).
Camera shifts, door opens and the guard simply starts to run, Zack looks over. Boom. Camera stops for reference for the new ladder ‘painting’, Zach gets down between shots and the ladder is mapped..we'll call this 'Ladder 3 map'..from here the camera can move up and around, as long as it returns to it's cue when the guard runs up into the shot.
Now Zach runs to the top of the ladder, then moves his foot placement out of shot (might even have swung out of the shot to another ladder). Boom. Shot stops, ‘Ladder 3’ is now mapped, real ladder pulled, 'Ladder 3 map' is in place and another shot of the guard running into the scene with everything painted in is stitched into the same scene (watch the shadow of the steps on the ladder change slightly). This could've also been done in separate takes with the guard at some point being masked into another take.
Zack has plenty of time to move in place up top of the building to dangle over the edge in this scene to look like he just climbed up.
The majority of takes likely involve Zack in the beginning for Ladder 1/2, the ladder placement, and timing of the shots (especially the running guard…you also have to get the camera to the marked cues.
How’d I do? :)
I think you might be right here! It's really confusing tho... timing is key to make it look seamless and blend well with the vfx🤔
great analysis. i hope they actually would show us if this is correct or not, but something tells me we will not find out.
