    These are the exact reason why I have been exclusively shooting 85mm in the last year for all my portrait session. I mostly shoot on the open street, so the working distance is crucial. And although the background blur is very nice, it is still not eliminating the context completely with the compression, as a 70-200 does.
    Not to mention the compact size and light weight of the 85mm lenses, which is a huge deal on long shoots.

    Just purchased a Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens on the used market. I was tossed up between several lenses: I did not want to pay the price for the EF 85mm f/1.2L lens. The two Sigma selections (f/1.4 ART and non-ART) have focus problems on many copies. I might have gone with a Tamron 85mm f/1.8 lens but, I couldn't justify the price. I got my Canon f/1.8 at about 1/3 the cost of the Tamron...

  • @hofra01
    @hofra01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I don’t believe that there is such a lens called the perfect lens for portrait. It all comes down to the artist and their style. For some people 35mm is the best, and others 50mm and other people 105 and above is the best and you can’t wrong them, because with their 35mm they are creating mind blowing portraits and same goes to the people that use 105 and above for portrait and create an outstandingly good portraits. So this definitely proves that there isn’t a perfect lens for portrait.
    All what I can advice people is to Find their style first before they listen to anyone else. I know many people use a certain lens just because someone told them it is the best for portrait or photographing people, even though they aren’t very comfortable using it but they still using it just because someone told them it is the perfect lens for portrait.

  • @marc6652
    @marc6652 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So tied with these "X reasons why you must think like me"... You can find as many reasons to shoot portraits with a 105, or a 135 or a 50mm or even a 70-200 lens. First : a 85 at F/1.4 doesn't give the same result as a 85 at F/5.6 or F/8. Second, you, as all of us wonder if you like a close proximity to your model and talk with her or do you prefer a certain distance when shooting. If the background highlights the model or on the contrary interferes with the image. If you can stand back outside or are in a small room ? If the model is alone or surround by an (un)wanted crowd. Etc... The good lens is the one who allows you to rich your aim according to the circumstances.

    @Cotictimmy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup - the 85mm f1.8G all the way. It's sharp, but more than that, it has lovely contrast & colour rendition too. Definitely my favourite lens for faces. Mine was £365 from Grays of Westminter, and my only regret is that I didn't buy it 6 years ago. I'm not in a position to compare the AF-D version because mine had been damaged and repaired at some time so it's AF was a bit hit and miss. 1.8G focus is super reliable. On a friend's D5500 (crop sensor), it becomes a 127mm telephoto and moves in really tight on the face. A great alternative to the very expensive Nikkor 135mm f2.0DC on a full frame.
    My take: - it's very unlikely you'll regret buying the 85 1.8G butif you do, then they are VERY easy to sell.

      @growinspirit5361 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My camera has a crop sensor, what would you suggest I'd use to gain the same effect as a 85mm on full frame? Or instead of 35mm on full frame? I have a 50mm f1.8 and 70-200mm f2.8

    • @Cotictimmy
      @Cotictimmy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well - The Angry photographer would probably say the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 but that's a manual focus. Your in-focus hit rate takes a big knock unless you are very expert - I've tried it and it's much easier to get sharp eyes with AF. I used to get sharp eyes with a Nikon FE an 85mm f2 Ai lens but I was young and had good eyesight and a old style split prism to place on the eye. Back to modern times - an option I've not tried is the Tamron 60mm f2.0 DX Macro lens. If I were to swap from my D700 full frame to a D500 crop sensor (it crossed my mind) then I would be testing that for a portrait lens candidate. There's a review by Moose Patterson who reckons it's slightly soft at the edges when wide open at f2.0 but that the centre is sharp. Sounds okay for portraits and for macro you wouldn't be using f2.0 so that would be fine too.

    I know a woman who looks just like this model. We're good friends, and when I'm with her, total strangers will suddenly be very chatty with us (her) and smile when we take photos together because she is so beautiful. Being alone vs. being with her is a night and day difference, lol.

    What do you think of the Canon 100 mm f2.8 macro or Canon 135 mm f2 for portraits ? Thanks

    I'm trying to find EF 85mm lens for canon and noticed that there are 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.8. Not sure which one to choose on the budget?
