Purpose: It was fun to make! The quality is supposed to be “bad”: if it looks like a flaw or error, it was likely 100% intentional and either left in or put in on purpose. My goal was not to replicate Ocarina or Majora’s Mask visuals with 100% technical accuracy or N64/DD specifications; only “similar” with artistic liberties. I am not a modder, but a simple 3D modeler/animator that is proficient at making retro inspired 3D visuals. Comments complaining/pointing out such are beating a dead horse, (Yes, I am aware/I know!) It looks exactly the way I intended too.
Technical: All 3d assets (characters, environments, “effects”) are modeled, rigged, animated, and textured from scratch by myself using Maya 2009 and Photoshop. I do/did NOT use any ripped models, levels, assets or textures from OoT/MM or other N64 games (nor hacked or modded ROMs) to achieve this look. It all accomplished with modern 3D animation software Maya where footage is rendered directly from it and brought into After Effects for compositing and video rendering. The video frames are natively rendered at 240x320 (4:3) resolution at 30 fps, but is intentionally frame posterized (frames dropped) to show at 15-18 fps and enlarged with no anti-aliasing or image softening to 1920x1080 (16:9) for upload. There are always supposed to be black bars on the sides; black bars on the top/bottoms during the “cutscenes”.

To everyone wondering: I did not predict anything: the first trailer for "Tears of the Kingdom" was released at E3 2019, before the name was announced, hence "Breath of the Wild Sequel" in the video title.

The fact that this is actually creepier than TotK just proves that the N64 graphics really had a big part in making Majora's Mask as unnerving as it was as a kid
totk is cel shaded and it lends a "cartoony" feel, it must be kind of hard to make that scary! remember when wind waker came out and all the haters said it was babby game? they were hot off majora's wonderfully spooky heels. i kinda get it now.
my definitive spooky zelda game was twilight princess more or less, soon after that we have a few games (skyward sword +bw/tk) in a whole other realm of art style that intrinsically struggle to reach the same heights of spook. i miss twilight princess sometimes. the cooliest edgiest spookiest journey of link. and majora too, of course.

It's certainly a thing, albeit a rare occurrence. For example the latest Switch release of Dragon Quest 11 will have a 16 bit mode for the entire game.

Why N64/PS1 graphics could be scary:
-The low polygon count on models was usually compensated with hyper-detailed pixel art textures. They look naturally uncanny, but especially on simple polygonal shapes, they create a contrast between realistic and abstract.
-The 4:3 aspect ratio and fixed-camera scenes create claustrophobia. You feel trapped.
-The MIDI sound quality allowed for realistic sound effects and voices, but horribly compressed. They sound, for the lack of a better term, ½ alive.
-Human characters with low-poly models don't look real, but move realistically due to the N64's frame rate and Kinetic Bone-based animation systems.
As you can see, most of these stem from a clash of the definitely virtual and the somewhat realistic.
It's the same effect as seeing an AI-generated human face has.
I still remember the reaction when they showed this at E3...

That would've been great! However, the Link and Zelda in this trailer are different from Link and Zelda from Oot (and MM), so I don't know if this would be a "sequel" per say. So it wouldn't be continuing the story of Oot/MM but be something entirely new. More like a spiritual successor on the same console?

I remember it was Christmas 1999 and I got this game as a present. I was a little kid, and having never played a Zelda game before, I was shocked. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom 64 is definitely one of the games of all time.

This just has to be one of the cutest things in gaming demake history, ironically, from a game that's even darker than Majora's Mask. The assests, N64-like music and overall feel of it is just irrevocably spot-on, and I can so see someone demaking TotK in this vein. Stunning, just awe-inspiring! Kudos, @The Regressor!

i remember it, summer night of 2000. playing this timeless classic in my uncles house. he had just bought me an n64 with this game. i spent every night on this game. he eventually moved away to atlanta, and i grew up and went to med school, completely forgetting about games. im coming back now 2 decades later to this masterpiece, thank you nintendo and thank you uncle ernesto for this game.

More uncanny.
The reasons for that are because 1) ambiguous sound effects that your imagination gives more concrete form to, 2) the movement being more than a single twitch and freeze: it spazzes out WITH afterimages, implying that it is moving INSANELY FAST, and _then_ it looks at the camera and the red eyes light up. Your imagination also fills in where low-res graphics are, so you get a scarier mental image overlayed on top of the actual graphics. Fear of the unknown combined with actually seeing it. That’s TERRIFYING.
Ganon looks even creepier in the N64 graphics.

@Lake Sublime i heard the gameplay is better but all the scary elements have been nerfed/nonexistant because the HD 1080p quality leaves very little for the imagination to fill out.
Lowpoly horror/scary games were so effective back then because when you couldn't reliably describe what you're looking at or discern the intent the devs were going for you can just extrapolate anything you personally find scary and it could be just as effective or more than whatever the devs invisioned.
Its kinda like lovecraftian horror in the way descriptions are left vague so you fill in the blanks with the scary scary unknown

Pseudo-analysing the fake scenes: Zelda and Link are attacked by two yiga, which appearantly are in the cave as well, probably searching for Ganondorf too. Ganondorf later consumes those two yiga (which looks really disturbing), and Zelda and Ganondorf rehydrated™ have a light against Malice standoff, Ganondorf with his sword and Zelda with the light bow.
I love this, he created a whole fake plot for the trailer, with custom scenes even. That's some effort.

For anyone out there wondering why this is creepier than the original trailer: the more freedom you give to the brain into filling in the gaps of something it perceives, the more creepy something gets. The same way art styles in general work to achieve a certain goal for the viewer.

Ya know how people make retro games in an 8-bit or 16-bit style? I’ve always wondered when would the old 3D retro style come back. You could totally bring it back man. This video had really good atmosphere for something that looks ancient.

Something about low-poly counts makes everything just a smidgen creepier and I love it.

The unsettlingness that was the n64 era of zelda and its music combined with the creepy atmosphere and camera angles that gove off resident evil vibes makes this look like a full on horror game, mostly talking about the intro

I was ten in 2006. These graphics were already outdated then, and they didn't yet have the advantage of nostalgia like the 2D games of NES and SNES had.

Nah, we thought like this "Those graphics are amazing" with our point of reference being 2d side scrollers from a few years ago.
Now, when i first saw Re2's animated cinematic i thought it looked like a real movie and was super impressed. I never thought of actual game graphics that way, nor do i suspect anyone else did.

We can make photo-realistic games today, just not to the scope or type that would sell. If you would like a "walk through the forest, do not interract with humans but maybe see some animals in the distance" sort of game, you're sorted and have been for some time.
Just that things get complicated once you add more moving parts to a game to keep the sense of it being photo realistic.
I used to think S.T.A.L.K.E.R would be photo realistic based off screenshots back in 2004. Mostly due to the lightning engine and shaders over their meticulously modeled buildings (which still looks impressive today - in my defense)

The first time I thought "it looks so lifelike" was when I looked at the 2012 Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer, the first part when Noctis is in the car.
