I bought Rushton Spencer railway station at auction in 1976 and over the following two years converted it into a home, living in a caravan on site whilst the work was being done.
John & Jean Bowler the landlord and landlady of The Knott in - and proved to be very good neighbours.

Well done for all the work in resorting the station! I spotted for a pint in the Knott Inn after making this video and found them to be very friendly!

The Knot was named after the Knotty which was a name given to the railway line many years ago. The pub now has this name. I think it’s sad how the track area in front of the platform has been made into a garden as it just takes away the history. I’m not a railway history fanatic but I think there should be restriction orders on such properties. I can’t understand why those who are fortunate enough to live in a property with such historic interest would wish to change it. It’s ruined a good building that’s should have its history preserved. I remember during the seventies the station still had the crossing gates and the platform etc could be clearly seen.

You ask about the name. The Parish is called Rushton but the whole encompasses two ancient manors, one called Rushton James and the other called Rushton Spencer. The Station probably sits in the manor of Rushton Spencer. In fact, Rushton Spencer is the dominant part of the village /parish and most locals and people from Leek call the whole area Rushton Spencer; the James part being mostly forgotten.

Thank you very much for talking the time to explain the name! I'd certainly never heard of Rushton James before!

When you're at the pub and someone phones you and asks if you are at home, you could genuinely say that you're Knot Inn, lol

Rush ton spencer station is lovely and typical North Stafford Railway style. I love the one at Sandon.
Just a suggestion but the River Dane is a good explore. It goes up to three shires head a place of ill repute and near the infamous Flash village. You also go near Ludd’s church and the pub in the nearby village has a connection to Sir Earnest Shackleton. Also nearby is the largest of a line of Cold War ROC observation posts. I don’t know if it’s accessible but you can get info on line about it. The one above Knutton (Newcastle under Lyme) was accessible a few years ago. I love North Staffordshire so much so thank you Henry for these and your other great videos! 👍😁👊

Luds Church and Flash are places I've visited. I've not yet made a video but hopefully will next year!
