    All the best licks in this one. Doc's playing is so exciting and satisfying. This is my all time favorite "Saints" by anyone. Love the contrast in styles/speeds and the setup from the dirge to the romp.

    I've worked on Dr. John licks for years before I fully got them down. Even ones that I thought I was playing correctly until I realized that no, there was one little rhythmic accent or syncopation missing in the left or right hand. The maddening thing is it is usually easier and more intuitive than what I was making myself play. He is of course playing two parts with each hand. He is a monster.

    For anyone thinking you could play this, look at the spread of notes he's hitting with his left hand and, unless you can figure out how to grow your left hand, just give up.

    • @ZipplyZane
      @ZipplyZane 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Just looks like a 10th to me. Not all that uncommon. Plus, well, it's not like you have to play it note for note in this style, and that good pianists don't have ways to make up for their lack of reach.

    • @whatsmylogin
      @whatsmylogin  7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I play this myself (nowhere near as well as the Doctor, of course). For a reasonably advanced pianist the tenths in the left hand are not the problem. The real challenges include trying to generate the groove that the Doc creates here, and to get the harder righthand figurations in the solo adequately fast and smooth. E.g. I can play the run in 1.38ff (a standard blues riff which Dr. John uses often) properly at the same speed, but somehow it still doesn't sound right. (I am probably using too much individual finger motion and not enough rotation.) Other challenges include singing and playing well at the same time. And if I am right in suspecting that this rec was improvised to a significant degree, then all we can do is humbly admire this gentleman's musicianship.

    • @andrewbarrett1537
      @andrewbarrett1537 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whatsmylogin A lot of the blues right hand patterns are played using slides... not traditional fingerings. If you do more sliding it will sound right. Also make sure you know which notes are the "melody" notes and which are the "ornamentation" notes... as with all music, the melody notes will almost always get more emphasis... if you play the ornamentation with equal emphasis or even more emphasis than the melody, it won't sound quite right. Of course I'm not a "blues musician" but have been listening to this music for quite some time. I should add, that in soloing, sometimes deliberate emphasis will be put on CERTAIN ornamentation notes for expressive purposes, but this should be done sparingly (especially by the novice) as its a question of musical taste. There are too many different musical situations falling under this umbrella to be covered by one comment, so I can't provide more detail. I would love to teach more but I feel more comfortable with ragtime than blues so almost all piano lessons you'll see from me in the future will be in a ragtime direction.

    • @esthermiller2713
      @esthermiller2713 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      raicho20,.........”religion” will NOT admit ANYONE through heaven’s gates. You, like many millions of others, misunderstand. I encourage you to pick up a Bible, which is God’s Living Word, turn to the book of John in the New Testament ( the New Testament begins with the books Matthew, Mark, Luke, John ).....& STUDY what it tells us. Ask God to enable you to understand what you’re reading. He WILL. SALVATION, which means being SAVED from SEPARATION from God for eternity, comes from an intimate personal relationship with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Jesus came to earth (God in human flesh) to take ALL our sins upon His sinless self! Jesus paid the price for all our sins,.....past, present, AND future.....when He surrendered His life on that cross. We didn’t deserve that gift. He did it because He LOVES us & wants us with Him forever! All we must do to be saved from separation from God FOREVER is to acknowledge that Jesus paid the price for our sins, THANK Him for doing that for us, THANK Him for forgiving us, & invite Him into our life......to guide us & transform us. If we pray that prayer of sincere repentance for all our sins, & THANK Jesus......with a sincere heart......we will then be admitted through heaven’s gates when we step out of our mortal body......& we will NEVER AGAIN SUFFER, and NEVER AGAIN sin,....& never age......& will NEVER AGAIN know death!!! NOW is the day to accept that Jesus Christ is YOUR Saviour,......because none of us know if God will give us another day!

    This man has such facile technique it's incredible... reminds me of Art Tatum in a way, in that there's no wasted motion whatsoever, no flashy hand theatrics... he keeps his hands and fingers as close to the keyboard as possible like a good classical pianist, and only raises them up if needed for fortissimo. As little hand / finger motion is used as necessary to play what he wants to play. He plays SO MUCH PIANO on his recordings I was expecting to see WAY MORE arm and hand movement. Amazing!!!

    It occurs to me that youtube comments always include two statements - that the person is underrated, and the people who click dislike are idiots. I suppose it's like those folks on Amazon who answer a question about a product with 'I don't know'. And inexplicable below the line phenomena. I know I don't enjoy a video as much if there are no comments allowed, so I can agree with all the people who agree with me!

  • @SuperStrik9

    Fantasic! The good Dr. is a BEAST on those ivories! As a guitarist this kinda playing impresses the hell outta me! There's things on the piano that you just can't do on other instruments. I know the piano for theory purposes but always wish I'd picked it up.

    I, like Mr Rebennack, am a guitar player trying to learn New Orleans style piano, and watching this just dropped my heart at how difficult a prospect this will be. How do you get to this level? Don't think he reads music, so he must have done a lot of one-on-one woodshedding with mentors like Longhair. I need a mentor. It's so frustrating hearing this music in my head all day and not being able to play it.

    • @BobbyandBlessings
      @BobbyandBlessings 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just take in the feel, it'll come to you. It's innate, and comes with being from and living in New Orleans. Music is a way of life here, especially if you're from a musical family, as he was, (and as I am also).. He had a natural feel and style that was typical of people and musicians in New Orleans back then, (maybe not so much now). He played in Churches when he was younger, and that feel can be expressed in music of all types. Come stay a while in New Orleans and hang out with some older musicians, it'll rub off on ya. God bless you.

    Andrew, James Booker was more of a direct mentor for him, but he was surrounded a culture of keyboard players that just doesn't exist anymore. Anyway, he has put a lot of effort into disseminating the style he loves. Check out his series from Homespun. It takes a lot of time but the rewards are great.
