    Sandblasting is really brutal on soft wood. It really does need a great deal of sanding afterwards, up to 240 grit at least. If your ceilings are too orange or yellow, you can always tint the (Matt) finish with a little white or taupe and don’t forget to condition the wood first, for an even finish. Andrew is an absolute star!

      THIS PART!

    • @alleyinn1
      @alleyinn1 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It depends if hand sanding on top of the sand blasting was part of the contract. The sand blasting actually did what sand blasting is expected to do. An additional round of hand sanding/touch up would have had to be agreed upon (and not done) for it to be contractors fault.
      When working with designers, contractors tend to be very literal bc they figure we have an exact vision and expertise.
      One of the biggest mistakes here was the use of a satin finish- and that was a design choice.
      I will say my contactor did an excellent job managing my expectations and the reality of wood being a natural material that we cant force to look a certain way thru sheer will. But the right expertise, advice and experimentation can get you close.

    The fact that the ceiling is vanished is good. As exhausting as it sounds I would be sanding it to even out the fuzzy. Undertones are good. The timber need to be left alone after that to get its patina. I have timber cathedral ceiling in half the house. There has been suggestions to paint them. My reply is, if anyone has a death wish then go near my ceiling with paint. They are the feature that makes your house and I love them. Andrew is wonderful. Bravo Andrew. That was a labor of love! Great job Andrew! Sandblasting wood lifts up the grain and makes it furry. So glad Andrew had the strength to do all that sanding... Get that guy a massage! Before you put a clear finish on it, use a wood conditioner. It keeps the wood from taking a finish differently in different areas- its especially helpful on non-hard woods. After that, use a matte poly to finish it...and test it before you continue. If you can't find a clear coat that leads to the color you want, you can also spray the ceiling with a toner-- which is a translucent color coating that can unify the color or soften harsh differences in wood planks. Since it is translucent, you can still see the grain.

  • @annettereed8199

    You absolutely have to strip all that back. It looks like the starting point not a finished ceiling, it’s a disgrace no joke. How shameful is that the client has to the work themselves, so bad, but obviously worth it as the results when you actually care and do the work are incredible. Well done!

    Bona Matte stains are the only stain brand I’ve researched that will barely change the look of your wood. I had similar issue where I wanted matte and contractors used satin and there was too much sheen, so had to re-sand and start over. Bona Matte Finish has No Sheen and keeps it looking like the original natural wood color it started with. Please please look into Bona…It’s looking beautiful again after re-sanding. Good Luck!❤

    Yeah. Good move to sand off the sand blasted texture. The ceilings are fantastic now. My partner and I were just discussing sand blasting yesterday. We have a 9000sq ft bow truss building with 24ft ceilings and the space has been empty for years (no electric/water/gas) and the wooden beams are for the most part good but thanks to a few pigeons that got in there are droppings on areas of the wood. We thought sand blasting is a good way to fix the unevenness but now that I saw the texture it brings not so sure. We might paint the ceiling a white (it will be a commercial photo studio) but our architect thinks the natural wood is special. Looking forward to more posts about your renovation.

    Its gorgeous !! It may not be what you imagined but you have an iconic home with its own beautiful character, charm and vintage wood .. would you rather have the painted version again ?
