  • For all those who are feeling nostalgic for Djibouti, the 13 DBLE and the REP's company tournants, 2 REI etc.
“The École du désert is an institution that offers training in joint combat, hardening in demanding desert zones, and inter-allied cooperation. It is a place where the Army’s moral forces are forged. To learn more about this institution, head to the 5e régiment interarmes d’Outre-mer.”
The 5e régiment interarmes d’Outre-mer (5e RIAOM) is a mixed regiment of the French Army, comprising infantry, artillery, cavalry, engineering, and light aviation units. It is stationed in Djibouti, Africa, and has been the garrison of Djibouti since November 1, 1969. The regiment was created on December 1, 1958, in Kati, Mali, and received the guard of the flag and traditions of the 5th colonial infantry regiment.
The regiment has a rich history and has participated in several wars, including World War I and II, and has been awarded several decorations, including the Croix de guerre 1914-1918 and the Croix de guerre des TOE.
The 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion (13e DBLE) is a regiment of the French Foreign Legion. In 2020, the 2nd Combat Company of the 13e DBLE, nicknamed the “Cheetahs,” was deployed to Djibouti in the Horn of Africa. Djibouti is a former overseas territory of France and is home to several foreign military bases, including that of the French, United States, China, Japan, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The 13e DBLE spent almost 50 years of its existence (1962-2011) as the main core of the French garrison in Djibouti. The 2nd Company had served as a construction works company of the regiment since 1970 until 1998, its inactivation. Reactivated in France almost twenty years later, in 2017, it became a combat company again. The 2nd Company, 13e DBLE has become 1st Company, 5e RIAOM and would remain in Djibouti until June 2020.
