Best regards from Germany. May this Island find peace for ever. I have been to Jersey in the 90's as a kid. We were staying at a very nice local familys' house with kids at my age. Must have been 12 or 13 and speaking the best English in my family. We played football, tennis and I learned the cricket rules. My grandfather was 16 when he was forced into the wehrmacht. Wounded an traumatized as a POW. He was beaten up many times by British guards. Never hated the British and made a visit to London in his 70s. It makes me keep my faith in humanism to see people forgive and make their peace. Thanks Canal Island people.
Fantastic program. It is a crime to leave all of that history rotting away at the bottom of the quarry in Alderney. Bring it up and put it on show for future generations to see.

This is a fascinating documentary. The wartime stories of peoples lives, the scale of the fortifications. Also the significance and opportunities of what was discarded in the quarry. Documentaries like these really deserve more airtime than the reconstituted cr@p they usually put on TV.

Glad for the fact sir. It was no longer used as a fort but a play tunnel.( also glad to learn a part of history I never knew of.)

@Logic genius I don't know if you are "Up on" the background to the "Falkland Crisis" Early in 1982 Margaret Thatcher rescinded the British Citizenship of the people of: The Falklands, Tristan da Chuna, St Helena, and South Georgia. Sending all the wrong messages to the Argentine Junta. The same way the USA sucked Iraq into the first gulf war. Sadaam Hussain asked the USA ambassador re: Kuwait the reply was: "The USA has no interests in Kuwait"

Can you tell me/us why the bunker(s) were filled with 80 tons of bricks etc in the 1980's with yet to be discovered and removed coins and various other items. That was a large project. Who created it, payed for it and why?

I lived on Sark for a while and then moved to Guernsey fpr a couple of years, such beautiful islands and the people are fantastic , big up Mrs Peree hows little Sark and the Silver mine....

This was a nice episode. Great stories. Also very nice to see how they restored these remarkable island fortifications and complex bunkers. Wish more people and historians could come together and restore more bunkers all over Europe for all generations to see. Open them up clean them and fix them. History should not roth away or be buried and forgotten.
I agree. I will never completely understand why so much WW2 history was to be buried away. Sure, at the time it could have been traumatizing, but this is one of the biggest events in human civilization ever.
Dan that was an excellent presentation. I agree the islands are fascinating. As a private pilot during the 1980's and 90's I visited several times and would liked to have retired there - except you need a lot of capital to do so. Your passion for history is infectious. Thanks Phil Robinson.

Nice to know my place of birth is appreciated like this. Living here all one’s life you get used to looking at the bunkers and the fortifications but watching this really brings interest back to this small islands history.

Hey this is the guy that advertise History Channel. He says it's like the Netflix of History. Gosh I see that advertisement at least six times a day on TH-cam. It's finally nice to see this guy actually get it one video for himself. He always says it's the Netflix of History. This gentleman advertises the history Network but I never see him do any history documentaries.

I very much enjoyed this documentary, but I do see an issue. The picture presented at about 26:30 of German officers is from a mini-series from 1978 called, "Enemy at the Door." The mini-series is about the occupation, and it is set, mostly, in Guernsey.

Next time in tunnels or caves bring something more than a penlight. We cannot make out anything with the narrow beam zigging and zagging, momentarily pausing.

We use to get into the Rouge Rue tunnel as kids in the early 1970s. There was a lot more stuff in there then and in much better condition.
Interesting video with some great content, unfortunately the use of the still at 26 minutes from the 80s TV show Enemy At The Door to illustrate German troops might have been a mistake

Fascinating video
Personally I found the attempt throughout this film to empathize with the III Reich's occupying forces & present their presence as some kind of student exchange programme, & create a sentimental picture of an island idyll of their presence, whilst making no mention of the Todt slaves who built the Atlantic Wall fortifications on the island, rather unsettling.
Dive at end was cool.
This was rather excellent. Wouldn't mind living there, actually.

It h as the look of a location in Mit Schirme Charme und Melone (The Avengers). Expect to see John Steed in the pub.
My whole family is from Guernsey. When my grandpa was young, he and his mother and siblings had to evacuate because of WW2. He stayed in England but unfortunately his mother came down with Tuberculosis. He says his mother had to stay in a shed in the garden when she came down with it and he said that every morning he would wave at her through the window. She died while still in England. Even today going down the beaches you see their bunkers and buildings. It is a fascinating place and was the only place in Britain where three Jews were taken hostage. I am glad it is getting the recognition it deserves. Oh also castle Cornet has really good rock candy in the gift shop in case you ever go.

These documentaries are good, but the titles are often a bit misleading. I would've titled it "the Wehrmacht's vacation islands".
I agree the title makes it sound like this was Hitler's own personal fortification. It's more of a political title. Like Hitler's Germany. Quite confusing if you ask me.
Get yourself a proper large and powerful flashlight for investigating dark tunnels.
I played as a child in the bunkers and military hospital in Jersey. Very large in scale, some kids did some digging round and rode their bikes home wearing German helmets and webbing. For a while there was a trade with the island's antique dealers....they were common enough to be used as boat bailers...this was in the 60's

Slave labourers who faltered were summarily despatched and added to the concrete in the Channel Islands constructions.

To those complaining that this documentary doesn't include Jersey, Dan Snow doesn't represent Jersey. He is an ambassador for the bailiwick of Guernsey. Get your own, though John Nettles has been a good ambassador for Jersey, though also does great war documentaries for the other islands as well. Met him while he was on sark for the operation basalt commemorations a few years ago.
interesting doc, not sure how i didnt find this earlier or if i did in fact watch it and forgot about it but what i like the most about it is it further humanizes the world war, dispelling propaganda and showing humans beings on both sides suffering at the hands of politicians
Remember going to Alderney when I was 12 with the Sea Cadets some 43yrs ago I always remember the German tower on the cliff top to the left as you enter the harbour... Would loved to visit that place again one day!

I don't know why so many documentaries leave this part of the WW2 history out, when they had control of the channel islands.
As someone born in Guernsey I agree, we often get left out of the story.

Amazing to know about this, I just been playing the Sniper Elite 5 France game which had a mission based on the Isle and I knew nothing about what happened on the Isle and during its occupation and the end of the war.
My step dad recalls playing in all the tunnels as a kid. Late 70s so I think they had free run of the whole place!

Nice! I thing that interests me about New Zealand is the Hacca, in rugby. I don't really like the Hacca, but I read about the history of it and I found it quite interesting. I don't think New Zealand ever really gets mentioned but I think if someone did do research on it I think it would be quite interesting. I think that's what I don't like, you learn lots about Britain and the history, but you never learn about commonwealth countries, or other countries in general. I think it's a shame.

Its interesting that the tanks the curator said were found in the quarry, FT17, were old French ones the Germans had commandeered. Like the recycled gun. They evidently gave the islands less than frontline status.
The French happily worked with the Germans and especially the Gestapo rounding up the Jews for them the Vichy government

Ameaçado com morte, ele não pudesse mais resistir. Mas os Nazis sabiam que essas pessoas pacifistas não vão a luta, mas ainda pudessem ser úteis. Assim o caráter desses soldados estava bem diferente. Ele mesmo estava uma pessoa muito doce.
No fim da guerra quando as ilhas estavam bloqueadas, ele quase morreu de fome e ficou surdo permanentemente. Ele assertou que preferia ser cego que surdo. Música estava muito importante na vida dele antes.
Foi preso na Escócia mas encontrou uma escocesa e quando liberado, casou e ficou lá. Eu ainda tenho saudades dele.

‘Enemy at the Door’ was based in Guernsey but the photo mentioned was taken in Sark.

I was born in African Libya durring the occupation by Rommels Afrika Corps ,i was too young to put together any real memorys but i do have small memorys of German troops helping my mother harvest our crops,through storys my mother told us we know that while we were living under German control was the best life a christian family could ever have in islamic Libya ,i dont have any memorys as a child of having fun or being able to openly play outside after the war ended because the purge of Christians began immediately following the war & we lived in terror .

ironically, the Channel Islands remained occupied until after the war. a successful Kriegsmarine raid was even conducted on a Normandy costal installation in 1945 from the islands.

Really interesting documentary on our home. Odd to not see any real mention of the POV camps set up in the islands. Alderney was basically one large POV camp and no mention of all the slave labor used to build those fortifications. Glad they captured some of the social history here.

Alderney also played host to concentration camps. It’s still controversial what happened there
Not just concentration camps. My family is from there and they tell shocking stories on their return

I like that ww2 archeology i hope all equipments be taken out of water & displayed in museums
it is a lovely thought but extremely expensive to do in reality. Costs in underwater surveying / mapping, divers, underwater archaeologists, diving equipment, safety gear, extraction equipment, conservation, restoration, etc. If it happens at all, it would have to focus on significant individual artifacts that could safely and economically be retrieved.

I'm glad Mark found all this! I'd like to see more about what was found! Hope that maybe these people can make it a National Museum, for tourism to come in! I can see Hoptels, small hotels, motels, resturants to feed the tourists set up and a way to make a living on the islands, besides the normal way of the islanders.
