Dexter Holland is such an underrated lyricist and the band have always played so tightly. Seen them live twice and both shows were absolute bangers.

@@farfromperfek i've only seen them once, at their 20th anniversary of the "summer nationals tour". during the original tour, they were supporting their album "smash", which went on to sell millions of copies. but on that tour (in '94) they were the opening band. when i saw them (2014), the lineup was the vandals (my favorite band), bad religion, pennywise, and then the offspring. i saw the show in philly, outside the electric factory. while in line, fletcher from pennywise was walking by, he saw my shirt (it was a blue short sleeve work-shirt, with a pennywise patch and my name embroidered on it, bought off the rack at a hot topic in '99, and it's the same shirt I've worn to every show i've been to since i bought it). he said to me "nice shirt" and went on his way.

I think you missed it if what the video is showing isn't enough to tell you.A childhood neighborhood with all the usual dreams and plans for making a happy life for those kids, but where did it all go wrong. From young marriage ,drugs and drinking, low self esteem jobs, and suicide...I would agree that the kids aren't alright.
Got to love the energy of The Offspring.Always sending us pertinent messages about the neighborhood.Dexter Holland eternally young .The remaining original member of the band and a very brainy guy, rocking the science world in a punk body suit.

The entire song is about how the kids don't turn out alright:
    The Kids Aren't Alright
    - by The Offspring
    *Lyrics*
When we were young, the future was so bright
    Woah-oh
The old neighborhood was so alive
    Woah-oh
And every kid on the whole damn street
    Woah-oh
Was gonna make it big and not be beat
Now the neighborhood's cracked and torn
    Woah-oh
The kids are grown up, but their lives are worn
    Woah-oh
How can one little street swallow so many lives?
    Chances thrown
    Nothing's free
    Longing for, used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
    Fragile lives
    Shattered dreams (go!)
Jamie had a chance, well, she really did
    Woah-oh
Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids
    Woah-oh
Mark still lives at home 'cause he's got no job
    Woah-oh
He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot
    Jay commited suicide
    Woah-oh
    Brandon OD'd and died
    Woah-oh
What the hell is going on?
    The cruelest dream, reality
    Chances thrown
    Nothing's free
    Longing for, used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
    Fragile lives
    Shattered dreams (Go!)
    Chances thrown
    Nothing's free
Longing for (what), used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
    Fragile lives
    Shattered dreams

The changing of tbe rooms is basically the changing of person. If you look closely, some scenes depict opposites. Some depict what the person was before, and how they turned out to be. Basically, the singer dexter went back to the town he grew up in in orange county. And he saw his old friends and what they ended up like. And he remembered the promises and bright futures they had and how life ended up so differently.

Awesome song and video, it just shows different realities, we start out with dreams; but life has other plans, for reasons within and without our control, these dreams either come true or they don't, these dreams coming true or not has effect on us, it can destroy you either way; so be careful what you wish for because it might come true, and that dream might become a prison, so even though a room might look like crap, if the person keeps playing that electric guitar and smoking medicinal herbs and is happy, he is free; where as; if a person is in a really fine house with the perfect family and a job that pays good money; but his dream was something different; then he is trapped in a prison that he can't escape, it's all in how you look at it, their is this story, this man had something really bad happen in his life; and all the people said we are so sry; but the man said it could be bad, it could be good; then something absolutely wonderful happened to the man; and everyone said wow how blessed you are; the man said it could be bad, it could good; I say it could be both, good and bad; so smile because maybe we need both 😊

90s videos were amazing. Lot's of new technology emerging at the time, coupled with the record industry pouring countless millions of dollars into their production led to some fantastic stuff. That being said, it's come out that a majority of that money was spent was directly out of the pockets of the artists themselves due to horrible contracts. The recording industry had a majority of the artists by the balls. But I guess we got some pretty damn good videos out of it!

Time passes. Things change. The older I get (I was a young man when this came out) the more I think about it. The people I knew back then and the dreams we had. Not many are living that dream today. Not all are living. Fragile lives. Shattered dreams. They're all around us.

So, this song came out when I was late teens. So, late 90s. Before social media. It’s about kids doing what kids do and growing up to become adults later in life. Some make it, some don’t. Some are happy, some aren’t. With everything that happened in the 90s, there is a reason GenX is the way it is.
