So glad to hear you're doing okay! Really hope you get success on your channel as well! Just always heartwarming to see family stick together! Something we always take for granted in our normal lives, but we'd all miss em dearly if gone (Especially after Mike went through that blood vessel thing... I still send prayers as that shook ME to the core with how real that was...). Stay strong and best of luck to you in your endeavors!
@@MarioMastar Thank you so much! Yes, my brother and I have both had our health scares, and it makes us all the more grateful for famiily time! I appreciate your kind words!
I would suggest trying what Cam does on his pedestal bases and dish the bottom. You could just use an angle grinder to just knock down the high spots so it doesnt rock.
This table is gorgeous! Loved the idea of the sand, but I think the resin looks way better in my opinion. You are so talented. Good job camera man Cam!
Countersunk cup holes backfilled with LED and clear resin would be cool. The uplights in the cup holders would illuminate a glass filled with beer perfectly. Easy to see if you needed a new beer 🍺💡🍺💡🍺💡🍺💡🍺💡🍺💡
Table looks great! So cool that you are recycling (upcycling?) that stump into 4 tables so far. Can't wait for the next project and the start of renovation 2.0: the workshop! Get rid of that stucco ceiling in the back!
Awesome that your decided to save this piece!! I was actually so happy when you decided not to do the sand! Especially with the inlays being beautiful natural wood, I think the bright colors would've made it look cheap and too artificial pretty quickly. LOVE the outcome❤
I’d love to see you put a heavy weight in the middle of the stump bottom for stability and some led lights to highlight the center underneath. Good job 👏🏻
Hey Mike! This was an awesome project! I don’t think I would have seen the value or potential in that stump and had the foresight to keep it for 5 years and turn it into something. Especially when you were cleaning out the building and were focused on just getting all the stuff out that you could. Anyway, great project!!
Great video. Most people would have thrown that stump away. Who would have thought you could make something so beautiful out of something so ugly. It was great to hear Elle’s itestimonial about hyponatremia and the affects it can have on the body. Good job, Elle.
For the blended epoxy sand, you could position a sheet of thick glass up high enough (maybe on a custom wood frame, or even just on the saw horses) to where you can look at it from underneath while you're forming it on top. You could even just position a camera under the glass and then keep a tablet or laptop up top for you to look at as you form it.
The rocking you demo'd might only be from the imperfections of the base or your floor, not from any problem with the center of gravity. Cam from Blacktail has a neat detail where he carves out the bottom of circular bases to make it only touch on the edge of the circle, like a cup or bowl from the kitchen.
use some rings with different diameters like this burger patty thingies stack them together and fill the voids to get a good result for the gradient :)
From what I've seen, it's amazing what even the worst looking wood can end up looking like after a good trim, and finish coat. Look up some of those "Wood turning the most knotted wood" videos for examples. Even seeing the rusty gaps in the finished product, just a good finish coat and sanding makes it an ornament you'd pay 30x the price for. Plus worst case scenario can always turn the wood into sawdust or filler.
I think if the colors of the sand for the geode look had more contrast it would help the blended look. When color especially those oranges are too similar too each other, things just get muddy. I think it could work with a richer color palette. Great job on the table. 👍
Looks beautiful! I wonder about the structural integrity of the banana bow-ties, since they curve in the same direction that the would might try to move. It seems like it'll be only glue holding the joint together, rather than the shape of the wood itself preventing it, like with a normal bowtie shape.
I like the geode idea! You could have done it in layers, like this: - orange layer against the wood, then it cures - slightly lighter orange after the first orange layer, then it cures - yellowish orange layer, then it cures - yellow layer… You get the gist. It would take more time, but full control of the result.
@ ah I see… it’s definitely harder haha maybe if you try playing with half cured sand-resin compound so it doesn’t spread as easily and you get more control
Glad you didn't get stumped by the filling of the center! Resin is as nice as the sand, if not nicer with the exotic wood shining through. Nicely done!
I was watching @Timbercon and he put up a video about a different type of resin to fill cracks. The product he used was Australian but I'm pretty sure that total boat has an equivalent product. Because the resin is thicker, it ends up being more cost effective and has a faster cure time.
if you want more control of the sand colours maybe look into Buddhist sand mandalas, they make pretty cool designs in sand, if you carefully poured resin over that you could in theory very controllable designs.
Ive been trying to find something like that massive stump for ages. Buying wood rounds and stumps is mad expensive depending on where you live. Most people chop it up because everyone wants them small for pickup and burning.
I definitely like how it turned out, but the thought I kept having as I was looking at the shape of the wood with the hollowed out center was "geode." I don't even know if something like that would be possible, but trying to think what a flat slab of wood would look like with a replica "crystallized geode" center (overlaid by some resin to make it a flat tabletop) seems in my mind like a cool idea. Again though, being not a craftsperson myself, I don't know if something like that would even be realistically feasible, and who knows if/when you'd ever find a piece of wood with a large, hollow center like this again.
The wider end of the stump should've been on the bottom to provide more stability. And are you starting a family? With a table that rocks even a little bit like that, a baby/infant is going to pull it down EZPZ when they start to grab things and learn how to walk.
Just a random thought but you could make a cutout on the bottom of the flower stump for a tungsten cube. Would definitely make that thing center heavy lol
Cool table dude. Regarding the gradient of the different colors of sand, you could try doing the various colors in different stages. Do the outer ring, let it cure, then the next, so and so forth, so you can control the colors and design and get what you want. Much more time consuming, but possible.
The finished product isn't really my cup of tea, but I like this idea! Definitely has potential, and I'd love to see you expand on this idea. Great video as always!
pretty cool but I think you should've made some legs that sprawl out, nothing to detracting from the flower stump. You could've mapped out the shape of the flower, and cut out a slot for it with the CNC. So think like a four or six pointed star with the flower slotted in the center.
Not my favorite piece of yours, but I really love to see the experimentation involved. In the end, you took a log that by all intents and purposes was destined for the scarp heap and gave it new life.
I'd give that sand resin a crack using a thick sheet of clear acrylic as the base. Stick a camera underneath, and you can see what's happening while packing in the sand.
Does resin stick to glass? If not you can use as the underside and you peek through it to see and fix the look. If resin does sticks to glass, you got a comment for the algorithm )
I wish you would have shown what happens if you bumped the table from the side since a coffee table like that is very bumpable by people walking by/sitting down. If it's easy to knock over with a small bump that would make the table pretty but a terrible idea.
In the future maybe try sculpting clay. It should be able to hold back the epoxy and conform to all the rough wood. I’ve never tried it, just came to mind so I bear no responsibility. 😂🤣
Looks awesome! But those banana inlays man... They just dont look good cause the gaps are way to present :( Honestly i dont know how you can let that pass. They are an insult to your skill and to the table.
The sand would have been so nice if you do it one sand mold after another. Like do on pattern today and do the next pattern the following day. Just like that

Well the table is ok. I know it was a kind of experiment where you try new things to see if they work out but the banana strips are a little bit odd, what about putting some led lighting there? I guess that would make more sense. Anway nice job. Its always a pleasure to watch your videos. And by the way could you make an informecial 90s style for the next promo? That would be super funny!
A bit sloppy with those clear to see epoxy stains in the wood around the cracks. Base should be other way around for more stability and inlays on the underside would look nicer. Bring on the the lets see you do it better comments 😄

I like the fact that for all the expensive woods and materials you use, you still work with what some would call trash woods!

You're SO creative with your tables and chairs 😮
I didn't know wood could throw things in the trash Mike 😉
I think it's a genious pun
How much wood wood wood trash if wood could trash wood? (Say 5 times fast)
Wood would, wouldn’t it

@ ah I see… it’s definitely harder haha maybe if you try playing with half cured sand-resin compound so it doesn’t spread as easily and you get more control
You could do your pour on glass with a mirror on the floor so you could see the bottom as you got.
Maybe a round sheet of plexiglass on the bottom to create a more stable base?

Glad you didn't get stumped by the filling of the center! Resin is as nice as the sand, if not nicer with the exotic wood shining through. Nicely done!
I see what you did there... 😂
that turned out pretty cool, based on how it moves though i think i might add a solid wood base cap on the bottom to make it more solid
Thank you!
I was watching @Timbercon and he put up a video about a different type of resin to fill cracks. The product he used was Australian but I'm pretty sure that total boat has an equivalent product. Because the resin is thicker, it ends up being more cost effective and has a faster cure time.
Yes, I used TB high performance epoxy for cracks, which is thicker. Thick set was used for deep pour for the cavity in the middle, which is thinner
I think just a flat back circle on the bottom would look good and add stability
100% my thoughts too!
Awesome job!
if you want more control of the sand colours maybe look into Buddhist sand mandalas, they make pretty cool designs in sand, if you carefully poured resin over that you could in theory very controllable designs.

Brings new meaning to the term "Reclaimed Wood."

I think I dislike the mismatch in the finish and the wobble. Perhaps stabilising rubber feet and a glossy finish all over.

I think there’s a could be a technique to making the sand idea work - kind of how people make pancake art with the design down on the pan
Really interesting piece! Love the swamp wood.
Why not mill the top of the sand? A smooth finish and a better visual of the gradient.
Resin sand will destroy a bit in no time
