Setting up my new Norwood PM14 Chainsaw Sawmill and Cutting First Lumber

  • Setting up my new Norwood Portamill PM14 Sawmill. The majority of the Norwood sawmill assembly took place in my garage which took over 5 hours. The installation guide had many typos and errors. Several parts were missing when the sawmill arrived and it took 2 years to receive them. Overall I am not impressed with Norwood and wouldn't buy another one of their products.
I was surprised at how involved the assembly and setup was. Now that everything is assembled and ready to cut, I am enjoying it a bit more.
This video shows the preparation for my sawmill and the first few cuts with the Norwood PM14 at my camp in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
I used an Echo CS-4910 50cc chainsaw for the cutting. I used the stock Oregon chain. The first few cuts went pretty smooth, but the chain got pretty dull after 3 or 4 passes. I bought a Holzfforma G660 and plan to use that and a ripping chain going forward.

I don't know where you live, but lumber prices around here have gone to the moon again. These little mills are looking more attractive every day.

I have no use for one of those but I bet it would be fun to put my 61 husqy on it and cut some lumber.

How long are those logs if I may ask?
    Nice place you got there.

They are just over 7 feet long. I'd have to buy another rail extension for the sawmill if I wanted to cut anything longer. A bit annoying

So now that you’ve had this for a while, what are your thoughts? I just bought one, and now that I’ve started using it there’s things I think could be improved

I wouldn't recommend buying one of these unless you have a very remote place you'll be cutting. Invest in a real band sawmill. These portable chainsaw mills are a ton of work! And I'm not impressed with Norwood.

I got the saw mill, chain and bar oil kit, 10 foot track system, cant hook, and lift hook for $1,727 including tax and shipping. I just bought the 5 foot track extension for $217 including tax and shipping. I will be making another video of that soon

In this video I was using the new Echo CS 4910. I have since bought a 92cc Holzfforma G660 chainsaw with a ripping chain. I have used that bigger saw with the mill once and it does good, it just goes through a tank of gas every 1-2 cuts.

between the cuts remove the sawdust with a battery leaffblower, to keep it clean , while you are working !!!!!! and after you finish the day as well , ......is advisable!!

What size bar are you using

    • @devinleonarduzzi
      @devinleonarduzzi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That was an 18in bar on the Echo. I bought a 92cc Holzfforma G660 chainsaw with a 28inch bar and ripping chain which I will be doing a video of soon

The standard kit can only cut 7' logs. you would need to purchase rail extensions for longer logs

You have not used the lock collars! They are sliding about on the bar nearest you within seconds when your starting to cut! Needed to ensure the log is held rigid - yours was not. I'm amazed no one spotted this! So why not try again, set up correctly before slagging off a company?

Toujours le meme probleme. Norwood n'a jamais corrigé la faiblesse de la poignée qui retient la scie sur le mat.
