I was saddened to see a story about Tad Lincoln that fails to talk about why he was so wild. Thomas was born with a cleft lip and palate. As a result his speech was difficult to grasp by most people and he was Lincoln’s youngest son. Tad was a bit spoiled and was allowed to interrupt meetings running and playing through the White House rooms. This was likely because Lincoln was gone on the circuit as a lawyer for long periods each year for approximately 26 years, the harshness of his own up bringing and Tad’s disability. Lincoln was close to his mother and older sister who both died when he was young. Thomas gave Lincoln lots of affection and relief from the tedious tasks of the presidency.
@@christienelson1437 I also found it odd that they didn't portray Tad's speech impediment. However, the story is supposedly Tad's memories. As such, maybe Tad would not think that his speech was a problem? His speech problem was "cured" after Robert hired an elocution teacher for him a year or two after the assassination. And when Tad returned from Europe, he had a German accent.
Kris Kristofferson looked like Lincoln and had a great personality as to how he loved his family and his three boys. What I read about Pres. Lincoln he had the same love for his wife and boys. This is a great historical movie about the Lincoln’s.
This was a funny movie and had heart ♥️. Tad Lincoln’s antics were a much needed respite for his Dad who was trying to keep the republic together and a Civil War was well under way.

This was a very nice movie. It had a lot of inaccuracies and anachronistic features. But I think it is a good introduction of Lincoln history for children and adults. Since the premise of the movie is that it is Tad's childhood recollections, then one could assume that any inaccuracies are the result of his faulty memory. In real life, Tad had a severe speech impediment in which only those who knew him well were able to understand him. Thanks to Robert in 1867, Tad had elocution lessons to correct his speech. Tad spent his last 3 years primarily being schooled in Germany and returned to the U.S. a couple of months before his death speaking with a German accent. The portrayals of Mary and Robert also were not quite accurate, but acceptable. Mary was very permissive with her sons, not scolding. They downplayed her aristocratic manner in which she thought that she was better than everyone else. But I'm glad they included mentioning the incident at City Point in which she berated Mrs. Ord, reducing her to tears. Although Robert was a bit of a prig, he was of great comfort to his mother and knew how to talk to her to calm her down. The movie over-emphasized his crankiness. Before the assassination, Robert was known to be jovial and almost as much of a prankster as his younger brothers.
A very good movie…all the actors were great, especially Kristofferson, who I think was a striking likeness to Abe Lincoln!! Beautifully shot & directed, it was an excellent portrayal of a great president👍👏

Abraham Lincoln's grandfather was Abraham Lincoln Sr., who fought in the Revolutionary War as a Captain of a militia. He was granted some land in the Shenandoah Valley of Kentucky and traveled with Daniel Boone opening up that wilderness. He owned 5,000 acres of the richest ground in Kentucky. One day while planting corn with is three sons, one of them being Thomas Lincoln, the father of Abraham Lincoln, the President, an Indian shot and killed Abraham. The eldest son, Mordecai ran to the cabin grabbed a gun and through the slits in the cabin aimed and shot the Indian dead. The Indian was fast approaching young Thomas who was reportedly 8 years old, crying over his dead father's body to scalp the dead man, and either grab or kill the boy. Abraham Lincoln Sr. never left a will, so the law always gave the property to the oldest son, that being Mordecai. Thomas went from being a son of a Pioneer in the Ohio Valley who was land rich to poverty, and having to make his own way.

But it was not the "entire" family. None of her children were "crazy". Tad and Willie were mentally stable, just allowed to be overly rambunctious. Robert had a temper plus "nervous dyspepsia".
