  • 1 night Solo backpacking trip into Birkhead Mountain Wilderness Area, Uwharrie National forest North Carolina.
    Tot Hill Farm Trailhead
    GPS: 35.63651440912188, -79.90446772713047
This will be the first of several trips into this area.
Excited to be in one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America, around 500 million years ago.
Metamorphic rocks, Paleo-Indian artifacts and colonial relics of the 1800/1900th centenary.
There is much to explore and discover in this location.
This trip was a test run and a cold weather camping gear test.
I plane on more camping trips this winter into early spring.
Goal is to beat the bugs and the southern humidity.
Future trips will include more stones of the past photos and videos.
This solo camping experience was a little rough with a 40 pound backpack, that hampered my energy level of exploring and narrating my adventure.
Plans are to upgrade my equipment for lighter travels.
Please stay tuned. Will continue to share my evolution in the back county world, not afraid to share the mistakes and successes.

Primitive/Backcountry hunters will use a manual rolling game cart, a travois or will even field dress and pack the deer, to get deer out of the Birkhead area. It gets them away from the "drive up" hunters who crowd the regular spots and gets them a chance at the deer who avoid the habitated areas. There are fewer of these types of hunters, but those few who are willing to put in the much greater physical work have a selection of game that no one else has.

I've actually bumped into a few hunters since the make of this video, and they pretty much expressed what you just posted. I have plans to go back in late fall winter and search for some old relics I found using lidar. The goal will be not to disturb anyone's hunt. The thing is, that is the best time of year to explore off trail.

@@silverwolvesutility5219 a man can hike back into that wilderness area with only a backpack and a recurve or longbow, often handmade, and come very close to hunting in a way that man hunted several hundred to a thousand years ago. It's a far cry from the ATV/crossbow/rifle, baiting with corn, mindset that is mainstream, and yields a very primal reward for those who are into that.

So im pretty sure the 20° 40° etc on the sleeping bag is more of a survivability number not comfort. Also if your eating Mt House that pot is way too big and easy weight to cut out. I go to this very area every Nov for a week long trip. I have learned so much and cut so much weight out of my pack. If you want or need any suggestions feel free to ask. My email is also on my about page if you would like to talk that way.

I have up graded alot of my equipment since this video. That sleeping bag is good for anything between 35 and 40. Anything lower than that, you're pushing it. I went and got a down fill 0 degree. I appreciate the advice. Will check out your channel.
