Another great example for Roy's skills on the piano is "Racing In The Street" - goosebumps every time. And Garry, well, there's a reason why Bruce calls him the foundation of the E Street Band.

Thanks David! For taking my request! This was a long time comin’, just to know you enjoyed this ballad! I knew you weren’t gonna find this song a drag lol. Figured you would’ve loved hearing Garry Tallent’s bass playing on this one!

This song produced in 1973 to round up his 2nd album, (at the time) was almost never heard live. This was the first perfomance of the song in Europe ever and 2nd time this century in the world (previous being in 2009 and then 1976). The B Side to Springsteens 2nd album of Rosalita, Incident on 57th street and New York City Serenade is one of the best in Music history.

I was at the 2009 concert at MSG when the entire album was played. One of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.

Should be at least a 9.5. He wrote this at 23 which is a monumental undertaking. You really have to hear the original as it's a statement on NYC which that imagery. It has a slightly different vibe because there is no drum track on the studio track. Also Clarence phrased things different where Jake is mimicking parts here. Originally Sancious wrote the strings with some help from local music teachers when it was recorded. He needed a guide in arranging it. Bruce and David came up with the intro but Sancious was a monster player at 22 years old. The album was recorded in Blauvelt, New York in the old 914 studios with the piano strings held down at the beginning four chords. . It was strummed over the piano harp giving it that sound while the piano keys were held down. The string sections were hired locally for this tour. My piano teachers son was contacted for the Pittsburgh show in 2016. Other than Italy and Australia some performers in the string sections didn't know who Bruce was. The Italian versions are the best. Generally Garry doesn't play a fretless.

Mr Gary W Tallent on the bass. We were lucky to get this played in Brisbane, Australia in 2014. He used some local violinists. It was the same show that opened with Stayin' Alive where you see the ladies.
We actually got the whole The Wild The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle album played that night. Which included Wild Billy's Circus Story with Gary playing the tuba. Plus half of the album, Greetings From Asbury Park. Incredible show and tour, we got so many rarities and album shows.

Great explanation (and demonstration) of the bass playing. I appreciate you doing that. Very interesting and edifying. I agree that the bass is sublime on this tune. Thanks, David, for your reaction and review. 👊👊

D man, thanks for this one. For those of us who grew up in the early 70's with Bruce, this has a special place during our many, many, many album listens.

Beautiful song - Bruce's early days- that 2nd album was chock full of songs that packed a movie length story into a few minutes and they have aged so well
I know you are enjoying a song when the bass comes out - nice lesson taught
There is a reason the ESB is in the Hall of Fame separate from Bruce
Garry Tallent's bio has the following quote
"Weapons of Choice: Garry was an early adopter of Leo’s MusicMan Stingray Nowadays uses a Spector NS-2J short scale on stage. In Bruce’s early years Tallent worked the Jerry Jones Longhorn and on latter day Bruce sides he has recorded with a ’63 Fender Precision and a ’63 Fender Jazz. In the 1980s Gary turned to the fretless quite frequently - among his instruments sans metal strips included a ’65 Guild Starfire and Spector. "
    Great reaction
    Thanks

Probably easier to play it like that, Roy's piano is fitted with a MIDI unit. While it does have hammers and strings (his tech said in an interview he breaks one a week) what the audience hears is Ivory Strings or something like that, a popular VST piano.
Gary is playing a Guild Star...something bass, same bass on the live version of Secret Garden from the same tour on TH-cam you can see it pretty clearly.

This is one of the few Springsteen songs that I think is better on the album than anytime I've ever heard it live. And as such, David Sancious on the piano for this song from the album really puts on a show in a way that Roy Bittan has never really been able to match when he does it live. Highly recommend listening to the album version.

To be fair, with the E Street Band, it could have been an upright contrabass. They'll play anything to make the song.

You won’t believe this but Gary the bass player does not use an amp live. He plugs direct into the board.

I believe it, I do the same thing. I use a Sansamp and run from that into the board. It's basically a preamp and DI box combined.

Roy is great, but the piano in this song was originally played by David Sancious on the album. He played on the first two albums. Fantastic player. This song often opened the concert in the 70s

Not my favorite, but I saw it open the show with full strings at MetLife in 2016. 👍 That was when Bruce went nuts and did a string of shows about four hours long.
