    We listened to KRLA , KHJ and for soul music KGFJ ! I'm a native Southern Californian and remember listening to a lot of Jackson 5 records on KGFJ and the Osmond Brothers One Bad Apple was played a lot on this station. These AM jocks would totally destroy today's radio broadcasters!

      Yeah, I listen them, too. I even listen to Bob Ewbanks, Bill Balance (before he became sexist radio host) on KFWB. This was before they became a 24 hr. news station. But in 1966, there was the call of the "WOLFMAN" on XERB. He was a good friends of Magnificent Montague on KGFJ. Aww, man! Those were good days of AM radio.

      Thanks for mentioning Jim Wood. My stepfather. I've been looking around on here for clips of his career at the various stations he worked at in LA and in Houston. Not able to find a lot but thank you so much for remembering him and your kind words.

    R&B radio was far more exciting on those days. The DJs connected to the audience and in these airchecks (I can't stand the scoped ones), you hear a lot of rare and forgotten songs, as well as getting a flair for the local cultures of these cities. Today, R&B radio has been reduced to a few nationally syndicated shows by Joyner, Steve Harvey, and a handful of others and local R&B tales are almost a thing of the past.

    These radio station recordings have a lot of history from radio winners to fundraisers to street names , to night clubs concerts . I can't believe MLK Blvd was once called Santa Barbara Blvd . I'm very surprised they announced the winners name and address on live radio she won $60. Buck's which was a lot of money back then . Nowadays if they were to say the winners named and address on live broadcast this person will be getting harassed for their winnings. How times have changed . Great piece of history of Los Angeles radio.

      @Jhud72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Santa Barbara Before MLK Like Rodeo Is Now Obama Blvd, That was a different time fasho, What do you mean "Harassed" Im From L.A. & They wouldnt harass them nowdays they would Rob them & just take the prize maybe pull out a Gun.

    Wow hearing these guys again...memories...youre right mayorslide, actually you hear Don Tracy (announcing), then Roland Bynum (Sly Stone commercial), then Bob Howard (newscaster...also great guy)...And Jim Wood..(use to groan and growl in the studio all the time) LOL..Jim Randolph, who Jim Wood mentions, was GM, who had just passed away (he was a sweety)... Although all of the guys...were great...Jim was my favorite... Thanks mayorslide for this tidbit of a fantastic era of radio gone by!!

    I'm surprised the FCC issued licenses to two radio stations so close to each other both geographically AND in frequency. KGFJ 1230 and KPPC-AM 1240 in Pasadena were RIGHT NEXT to each other on the dial, and I'm wondering how the latter of the two stations got their frequency assignment. I'm guessing KGFJ was first because KPPC-AM was assigned an operating power of only 100 watts. Usually, local frequency stations were non-directional because of their low power of 1,000 watts day, 250 at night, but in LA, it would've made sense to do that because of the proximity of KGFJ and KPPC-AM. KPPC-FM (106.7 FM) would become LA's KROQ (K-ROCK). KPPC AM & FM were originally put on the air by the Pasadena Presbyterian Church, which is where the PPC letters came from.

      Back in the day , the local newspapers used to print a person's home address. It didn't matter if it was a crime story , a charity event , a marriage , someone in the military or teacher and students. It was a different world back then , but it wouldn't happen today.
