I love how well-made but also minimalistic these videos are. No flashy graphics, no desperate attempts at comedy or hectic hyper fast audio editing, just well-made conversational talking about something the creator clearly is enthusiastic about.
Or an obnoxious voice where everything is overemphasized. Thankfully I've found that the best, most in-depth content also tends to come from people who don't correspond to the TH-camr stereotypes in terms of presentation.
It's been really cool to see you cover all of the pre-Trails Legend of Heroes games. Also worth noting is that LoHV is apparently the first video game to feature OP animation directed by Makoto Shinkai (then using his real name, Makoto Niitsu), who worked for Falcom between 1996 & 2000. While his Ys II Eternal OP is truly the apex of his work there, you can see the little bits of animation in this game's OP definitely look nice, too.
Nice,i used to read yer site longtime ago, also agree, the pre Trails games especially LOH series, wasn't given much exposure enough considering it was the predecessors series, which a shame considering the series was decent enough on it own
Omg I love you! Thank you for making this video! 5 is my absolute favorite of the trilogy and also the first one that I played. I wanted to be a musician at the time and was avidly studying music so I was happy that there was another music based jrpg I could play (eternal sonata being the most well known one if any). Anyway the reason why there's a major shift in the plot near the end was because the story writer for 5 quit halfway through development and left the story unfinished and when Kondo stepped in he had to basically finish the story. Which he did an amazing job at btw. I have finally obtained the windows version myself and I am so happy to experience this game in its original glory. Can't wait to see more old games from you
Man, those older pc game options certainly take me back as well. The XP years were great for importing PC games. And don't worry about the whole naming thing, oftentimes localizers can't get it right at all, even when the japanese given them clear directions as to what the name is supposed to be, like with Fort here or Zaks in FF7.
This and the LoH 4 PC remake were my most played childhood games. I replayed them later in college and appreciated even more on the story and world building.
Okay... of all the cartoons I expected to see clips of... the Misadventures of Ed Grimley is NOT one I thought I'd see in a video about Legend of Heroes. You sir are a genius.
Thank you for making a retrospective of the Legend of Heroes games! I agree that the Trails games have more than enough content online, so good to see someone tacking 1-5. Could be awesome to dive into the Dragon Slayer series. Or just do whatever you want to do next, since I'm sure there are so many unknown gems on the PC-88/98!
some modern ltd editions scratch that itch pretty well. I recently got the god of war ltd (and that's frankly excessive) and triangle strategy which has a pretty dang fine set of goodies inside, all packed in a nice, shelf-friendly package. Even back in the days a lot of big box games were really pretty empty or severely underwhelming btw.
Great upload! As a big fan of jrps and someone who's trying to learn Japanese, it's awesome to see someone review these cool old school games! Hopefully, you will keep doing this series and other cool obscure pc98 games!
And that's my favorite of the Gagharv Trilogy wrapped up. Man, I'm currently clinging to every little bit of pseudo-evidence that might prove the Gagharv world is part of the current Trails world, too. I just want the Gagharv trilogy to become more popular, it was amazing for its time and I still think they're some of the best RPGs ever made. Glad to see that Geofront is working on translating them, starting with White Witch. Now the only thing that would probably be even better is a proper remake of the whole Gagharv trilogy with extra lore added onto it. And maybe make a game about Michel. Thank you so much for the video, whatever your next one's gonna be, I'll be looking forward to it!
I actually do that as well. I would really like if both Trails and Gagharv had a shared world. Even the original Iselhasa duology deserves to be there. Hopefully someday we see something about it on the current Trails games.
The Legend of Heroes is truly a legendary RPG series. I've played every title except for the second Dragon Slayer, Trails to Reverie, and the Kuru games. Hopefully I will get to play them all someday.
What I love about this era is the graphic design sensibilities still hold up to this day, This is an nearly 25 year old game. That blue violin box cover is so classy. Even the manual work is very nicely done.
Really cool to see these titles reexamined. I know I tried the PSP versions at one point but didn't really get into the series until Trails almost a decade later. Really love seeing all this old gaming history in general.
As far I know a Roland Sound Canvas SC-88Pro( or a SC-8850 in SC-88Pro map mode) is the optimal MIDI sound source for this game. Falcom was in love with the Sound Canvas line. The MIDI soundtracks for their PC games were always arranged with a SC as sound source.
it was so surreal hearing that Trails in the Sky motif in a song from an older falcom game. although that's kind of what the entire Gagharv trilogy seems like to me: an old track that contains exact echoes of more iconic songs to come. from my perspective (a zoomer trails fan), the Gargharv games seem very rough around the edges, and I'm kind of glad they were that way, so Falcom could learn from their mistakes before they made their absolute masterwork of the Trails in the Sky games. This game seems incredibly fascinating on its own merits, though. the twist that the world of these games is actually divided into three seems like a super creative storytelling concept, and the focus on music works really well for a Falcom game.
This is the best thing to watch saturday night with some snacks, this vibe of old PC rpgs that never came in the west makes me feel like im in some kind of very special and secret club. I realy enjoy watching these videos, they are actualy something that i usualy show to some friends. I wish i could have some money to give to you guys on patreon, i love these videos.
This was fascinating. I really wish I would've at least picked up the PSP version when I was a kid and saw the cover art. It really grabbed me but I just never picked it up. I really want to play the original now moreso because of this video. Going to watch all of the rest now I think! Thank you!
I really like this game. Most people usually prefer LoH4, but I actually think this is by far the better game storywise. It ties the trilogy very well and I think is the only LoH game that allows a 6 party fights. Also, as a geeky side note, in the Windows version of LoH3, Fort's sprite is different from the one in the PC98 version. He actually looks like McBain.
Wow you just sold me on Legend of Heroes. Been slowly building up over the earlier videos but hearing the connection in the spoiler section here made me go " _That's actually awesome._ "
Glad to see "For Those Who Interfere, No Mercy" shouted out here, easily one of my all time favorite battle themes. Also I'd properly lose my mind if I saw that hiring pamphlet in their physical games. There's nothing I wanna do more in life than make music for Falcom RPGs
I actually really appreciate that you aren’t covering the newer games. Falcom is great but they weren’t the only game studio open at the time and I would love to see more about what everyone else was doing. I also really appreciate you covering part 5 since you covered the rest of the series because there is so little coverage of all of the Falcom games in this period. But at the same time I’m here for the PC98 stuff!
Yey, another episode of... Windows... PC... Paradise? Anyway it was great to watch video and the game seems quite unique. It always interesting for me that some old games seems timeproof and run on modern PCs without issues. And i want to play english versions of PSP remakes of Garghav Trilogy now (well, honestly i want to play most of Falcom Games after yours and some other creators videos :D)
thank you so much for making these videos, you inspired me to play the psp games and it was really nice to see what the original versions looked like. and also, even if many people have talked about trails in the sky, that doesnt make what you would have to say about them not interesting
Cage song to me relates to the idea of a bird trapped in a cage, unable to fly whilst singing its beautiful song with no other birds able to hear it. It symbolizes being trapped and having beauty taken away.
Thanks for covering all the old Legend of Heroes. They've always been an oddity to me as somebody who started with Trails FC. Would love to see Falcom to take another crack at the Ghagarv Trilogy with updated graphics, game play and maybe even an updated story.
"Cagesong" could've been the sad song a bird sings when shes trapped in a cage. Very poetic. Instead we learn it's just one of those situations where they tack too random words together because it sounds cool.
I agree on skipping over Trails in the Sky for now too. Talked about ad nauseum, and there are just too many other hidden gems to cover. Great video as usual dude!
It's fascinating how Falcom has changed the names and the "series" itself has evolved over the years. First Dragon Slayer, then The Legend of Heroes, and now Trails. And then they even attempted to bring back the Xanadu branding a few years ago with Tokyo Xanadu.
Huh, McBain is a dead ringer for Vitalis from Ienaki ko Remi, down to being the founder and performer of the minstrel party and playing the harp. Quite curious.
I'm sad you wont be covering the later games. I definately understand your decision to do so, but the context in your video is very rare compared to other fans who haven't played 1-5. More aptly though, the way you do background information and show the game being installed and played is incredibly captivating.
It would be interesting you talk about the other falcom games for the PC88-98 era. Brandish could be a good one since it got some release internationally but I love how you show these Japanese PC games.
I think you made a sound decision. I'm no fan of the Kiseki series, which has next to nothing in common with the Gagharv trilogy. Plus, I think those "modern" games have been covered to death already.
Well it sure is pretty, excellent art design.😍 640x480 eventually came around on PC platforms, not 640x400 or other weird variants, just solid true 4:3 aspect ratio with 1:1 square pixels.😉With the band aspect I keep imagining like a Scooby/Josie situation of getting to gigs in a wagon while making pitstops to fight monsters.🤔 MENDOZAAAA!!!
Sad to hear you won’t do 6 I’ve been living vicariously through you for these games. I’ve always wanted to play them and just haven’t gotten to it. Any chance you’ll cover more Ys on this channel? Specifically the ones that didn’t come to America. Or a compairison of the ys4 titles?
I understand your reasons but I do hope that one day you will cover the Trails games in this level of detail, purely selfishly because they are some of my favourite rpgs.
Don't have any personal stories or "well actuallys" for you this time, as this is the one Gagharv game I basically never played at all. It sat on my shelf for ages, and I think is STILL on my shelf now, in my closet, but I've just never gotten around to playing it! Seems like I've been missing out, though, as it looks to be a spectacular experience -- classic Falcom in every way! One day, perhaps I shall set things right and finally play through this trilogy in earnest. But until then, I really appreciate having your videos for reference and inspiration. Keep doin' what you're doin', man, and thanks for another great episode! ;) And... well, I guess I will make a suggestion, while I'm here! Maybe I've made this suggestion before in comments on another of your videos, I'm not sure (I have kind of a goldfish memory sometimes). But I feel like if you've never played it, you should absolutely 100% check out Falcom's "Dinosaur," and especially their Windows remake of it, "Dinosaur: Resurrection," which added one very minor feature to the game that honestly changes everything and makes the entire game feel so much more "complete" (basically, a change in the battle encounter rate, wherein it now varies WILDLY depending on how many walls you have around you at the moment, which transforms finding dead-end passages in dungeons from a frustration to a relief, since you can easily rest over and over again in a dead-end without getting into a single battle, recovering your entire party to full!). I definitely think Dinosaur would be right up your alley, though, as it has... just, a very weirdly ultra-serious story with some extremely surrealist elements to it (townsfolk creepily breaking the fourth wall by mentioning the fact that they exist solely to benefit you, or that the reason there are no children in the town is because they have no need for children since said purpose is fulfilled without them), and also an absolutely outstanding soundtrack that I feel may be one of Falcom's most underrated. Would be right at home in this series, I think! Just another recommendation for the pile, though, I'm sure. ;)
Haha, well, the part where I mentioned the masculine form in French was meant to be just a joke. There's really no way to tell what exactly they were thinking when they named him "Fort".
I really hope Falcom re-releases the PSP versions of these masterpieces in the future, fixing the heavily botched English translation. They're my favourites in the entire Legend of Heroes saga.
Shame you don't want to do a video on LOH6, that's when the series truly starts to get great imo, hence why they're talked about so much I suppose. Still, would love to hear what you in particular have to say about it!
The way I presented it in the video really makes it sound like that, doesn't it? I kinda thought so too after I made it. In actuality, he says he wants to go to the other worlds before she confesses her love, and he also asks if she will come too and she says yes. But we never find out what happened to her. Only Fort appears in Legend of Heroes III.
I didn't time it, but I would say it's pretty long for a 90's RPG, but definitely not as long as a "modern" RPG. I'd say it's definitely closer to 50 hours than 100.
Apesar de gostar muito desse vídeo, me parece que faltou algo nele que outros da série têm: algo mais substancial sobre o final da história e imagens não censuradas do desafio final
hopefully setting those game @ 4:01 to 16bit or if still wont work try 8 bit in compatibility tab setting per game this happened to me in Virtua fighter 1? or 2? and Fatal Fury 3 and other games
@@BasementBrothers just did ! dgvoodoo2(good for ez scanlines and modern features) & ddrawcompat are some others if you havent tried already. psp ver is the way ill play through this series. except the first im still playing it on the TGCD .
Ugh... I remember picking the PSP version of the game up back when it first came out & remember really hating it lol. Music was pretty good tho. The game was a LOT different than the PC version you show here, and not in a good way. Dunno why the heck they changed it to make it as generic as humanly possible on the PSP... Am sure it would have been way better had they left it alone & just made it like the PC version.
What is that cartoon you reference at 13:52. I used to watch that all time but I can not remember it's name. It is driving me mad. I asked in a previous video but you did not reply😭
Dragon slayer series legends of heroes is in a separate world. Legends of heroes 2,4,3(psp) are in three separate worlds which means the first legends of heroes, and the Dragon slayer are its own world, separated by an invisible barrier. The Trail series, hinted that each world is separated by invisible barrier. Same with Ys series, Nayuta’s World, Tokyo Xanadu(which is the original earth) and every other Falcons game.(but it’s mostly a theory.) Pretty much there is a miniature multi-verse, all the worlds in the Falcom games is surrounded by a pocket dimension, surrounded by impassable barrier to prevent the humans from leaving their world. Which was created thousands of years ago by ancient humans that can manipulate reality and was type 4 civilization and control most of the universe, creating multiple planets using ancient advanced technology thousands of years ago. But that’s mostly a theory .🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 I have to say theory because they’re still making new games to add more to the Lore. Pretty much thousands of years ago the Mythos, Gods, angels, and other artificial lifeforms. Went to war with humanity which caused ancient humans to fall and most of their ancient history, which is mostly digital, was destroyed in humans on each of the planets, completely forgot their own history.
These videos sure makes these games to be not forgotten by history, thank you man.
I love the passion that he puts on his videos. He makes these lost games great again
I enjoy it when his comedy is just putting in Simpsons clips though lol, like I cracked up at "ooooo mcbain"
@@Belgand I have no issue with MrTopTenLists but I tried to watch his Ten Best Giant Fighters vid and his cadence is fatiguing to listen to.
Com toda certeza
_(strategic clip of overpouring a whisky)_
Thank you so much for covering the non-Trails games! This has been a great series to follow! Looking forward to more PC 88 and 98 goodness!
Nice,i used to read yer site longtime ago, also agree, the pre Trails games especially LOH series, wasn't given much exposure enough considering it was the predecessors series, which a shame considering the series was decent enough on it own
“Magic ticket my ass McBain!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Your Simpsons inserts are impeccable 🤣🤣🤣
My day instantly improves when I get to experience new unknown JRPGs. Thank you!
A Pleasantville reference always makes my day. I love that film.
that marks all 5 legend of heroes vids before trails. thanks for the vids, learned a lot. Man I love Falcom
Falcom is underappreciated
cant believe its been 20 years since ive played trails in the sky
Man those cliff and final boss graphics are perfection. I love the greens too. Looking forward to the next pc88/98 games
As the owner of a new puppy, doggy kisses definitely do heal
Nice, the old guy is like Dogi from the Ys games
So glad I found this channel! Very interesting to see a side of gaming history that we missed out on in the west.
You used to get so much swag with games ... I miss those days.
some modern ltd editions scratch that itch pretty well.
Man, the music is fire
Omgg it droppeddd, i was so curious how the story ends
amazing work as usual man. Keep it up.
I"VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Besides everything else being great about your videos, I appreciate the impeccably timed Ed Grimley reference with the triangle performance.
Thanks for finishing out the trilogy! I definitely want to play the trilogy for myself someday, as someone who really likes Trails 👀
The manual didn't suggest any particular midi module for this one. Might have been interesting to try it though.

The boiz dropping the Pleasantville reference like a chad. Good video, as always.
This is the best thing to watch saturday night with some snacks, this vibe of old PC rpgs that never came in the west makes me feel like im in some kind of very special and secret club. I realy enjoy watching these videos, they are actualy something that i usualy show to some friends.

Windows or not, I adore your vids esp when you take a break to just film old pcs running, doing their thing and making their iconic sounds

I normally don't like little clips inserted for comedic effect in videos by other people, but your choices are just so good I had to laugh.
thank you so much for making these videos, you inspired me to play the psp games and it was really nice to see what the original versions looked like. and also, even if many people have talked about trails in the sky, that doesnt make what you would have to say about them not interesting
AAAAAH YOU HAVE THE SAME PC AS ME ISN'T IT GREAT 😍excellent video!
Cage song to me relates to the idea of a bird trapped in a cage, unable to fly whilst singing its beautiful song with no other birds able to hear it. It symbolizes being trapped and having beauty taken away.
The idea of a music troupe visiting towns to perform and gaining band members is a great conceit for justifying an RPG adventure.
Thanks for covering all the old Legend of Heroes. They've always been an oddity to me as somebody who started with Trails FC. Would love to see Falcom to take another crack at the Ghagarv Trilogy with updated graphics, game play and maybe even an updated story.

I love this channel! I also love seeing how Japan has their own fantastic PC RPG's. Please keep up the good work!😀
I just want to say I like your videos. I haven't played any of The Legend of Heroes games though.
Love these videos so much dude! Still have yet to play one, but it really gets me hyped to do so!
It's fascinating how Falcom has changed the names and the "series" itself has evolved over the years. First Dragon Slayer, then The Legend of Heroes, and now Trails. And then they even attempted to bring back the Xanadu branding a few years ago with Tokyo Xanadu.

YES MORE LOH
I'm sad you wont be covering the later games. I definately understand your decision to do so, but the context in your video is very rare compared to other fans who haven't played 1-5. I think you made a sound decision. I'm no fan of the Kiseki series, which has next to nothing in common with the Gagharv trilogy. Plus, I think those "modern" games have been covered to death already.
I dug into my inner weeb for "cagesong" and came up with this - a beautiful longing song like from a songbird in a cage. Trapped but still singing.
Heck yeah
First, been so eagerly anticipating this since the tear of vermillion video. Going to watch it right now, thanks for making it!
Well it sure is pretty, excellent art design.😍 640x480 eventually came around on PC platforms, not 640x400 or other weird variants, just solid true 4:3 aspect ratio with 1:1 square pixels.😉With the band aspect I keep imagining like a Scooby/Josie situation of getting to gigs in a wagon while making pitstops to fight monsters.🤔
MENDOZAAAA!!!
20:15 I laughed way too hard at that comment.
The rules that constrain other men, mean nothing to McBain.
You could make this the first video in a "Windows Paradise" series, covering JP only Windows games.

Would be right at home in this series, I think! Just another recommendation for the pile, though, I'm sure. ;)
Wow.
Falcom really do love making up words, don't they? There's plenty of that in Sora no Kiseki, but it helps with lore/world creation.
I can't believe someone else actually watched The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimly cartoon besides me 😂
5:58 The E in the feminin "Forte" is also not pronounced in French, so the katakana is consistent there. In the masculin form "Fort", the T is mute.
Haha, well, the part where I mentioned the masculine form in French was meant to be just a joke. There's really no way to tell what exactly they were thinking when they named him "Fort".
Fortuna is the personification of luck and fate
Did I mishear you say “pairacter”? Like the dog character and squirrel character together are a pairacter???
Awesome content as always!
Thank you, I love your content. Can I know what mic do you use, please?
Where are we going to put Mcbain? Forte's room. Forte's room. Forte's room. Dumpster.
Great Stuff!
Great job!
I really hope Falcom re-releases the PSP versions of these masterpieces in the future, fixing the heavily botched English translation.
They're my favourites in the entire Legend of Heroes saga.
I'd like a video about LoH6, I hope you eventually make a video on it eventually.
I played the PSP versions, and I'm really glad they made them Turn-Based. I'm not really interested in Real-Time Strategy.
ever done Zeliard? its a fun 92 rpg side scroller
Haven't done Zeliard yet, but I definitely hope to one day!
@@BasementBrothers well, get your gospel on when you do so, you're gonna be led by the holy spirit!
Shame you don't want to do a video on LOH6, that's when the series truly starts to get great imo, hence why they're talked about so much I suppose. Still, would love to hear what you in particular have to say about it!
is that boat's name STOMACH???
I thought about mentioning that, but it didn't make the cut. Can't mention everything.
@@BasementBrothers thanks for the fantastic videos!
So she confessed her love and he just split to another world? Man, that's tough. Whatever happened to her?
The way I presented it in the video really makes it sound like that, doesn't it? I kinda thought so too after I made it. In actuality, he says he wants to go to the other worlds before she confesses her love, and he also asks if she will come too and she says yes. But we never find out what happened to her. Only Fort appears in Legend of Heroes III.
Not sure if I missed it but how long is this game? Wanna get into the series but I dunno if I can do 3 200hr jRPGs right now
I didn't time it, but I would say it's pretty long for a 90's RPG, but definitely not as long as a "modern" RPG.
I did get it to work! Did you watch my Legend of Heroes IV video?
McBrain=Dolgi?
Esse vídeo não está na playlist pc88/98 paradise.
Yes. This game is for Windows, so the video is not part of the PC-88/99 Paradise series. Thanks.
What is that cartoon you reference at 13:52. I used to watch that all time but I can not remember it's name. It is driving me mad. I asked in a previous video but you did not reply😭
The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley. I remember answering this already.
@@BasementBrothers Oh did you? Thanks so much. This memory has been bugging me for years.
Dragon slayer series
legends of heroes is in a separate world.
Legends of heroes 2,4,3(psp) are in three separate worlds which means the first legends of heroes, and the Dragon slayer are its own world, separated by an invisible barrier.
The Trail series, hinted that each world is separated by invisible barrier. Same with Ys series, Nayuta’s World, Tokyo Xanadu(which is the original earth) and every other Falcons game.(but it’s mostly a theory.)
Pretty much there is a miniature multi-verse, all the worlds in the Falcom games is surrounded by a pocket dimension, surrounded by impassable barrier to prevent the humans from leaving their world.
