@@Gibby34340 Paladin is still Paladin and hasn't been made into something completely different. BLM is Yoshidas job and it still sucks dick below 70 and isn't good before max level. Shitty leveling is a design decision not a lack of job understanding.

You forgot to mention how abyssal drain will never be up because your muscle memory had you hit carve and spit already.

Abyssal drain is only useful for wall-to-wall trash pulls…I’m not using what could be a 1400+ cure potency in a dungeon on a boss for for 200
the first time heard someone call that skill a DOT i was so mad. then they said “technically, we are all dots” and i’ve been under cardiac arrest for years.
Having ninjas and monks memorize these overcomplitated insane damage rotations, only for a resident DRK player to basically faceroll through their opener and manage to crank out higher DPS numbers is incredibly funny
I finally leveled DRK to 90 and ran about 2-3 expert dungeons. I can confirm, in fact, the blackness of my soul has never burnt with such a visceral hatred for all things "fun" and "cohesive" and, darkness forbid, "well thought out and balanced". It truly is the Dark Souls of jobs. I'm never going back to WAR or GNB again.
DRK opener: smash every button you can find. Fall asleep for one minute. Repeat.

Basically, except that superpower isn't actually a superpower...it's just slightly-above-average strength that comes at too great a cost to be justified.

It's so painful. Dark Knight's entire deal is mixing melee and dark magic together to survive any fight and cleave any foe. Yet a BIGGER Flood of Shadow was all they could think up for new abilities in Endwalker?! Uuuuuuugh.
PSA to healers. If your DRK uses Living Dead, let them die and dont spam heals trying to keep them from dropping to 1. The skill doesn't totally suck anymore and i feel like majority of healers are so used to the old shitty effect lol
By the time healers get used to letting the DRK die they are gonna probably change it again
When I see Living dead on a DRK my autopilot takes over and heal them to full 💀
when I heal them to full, the buff icon changes colors. this is enough for my smooth brain
I just have a macro that announces when I use LD, makes it easier for healers to notice.

Hearing an emotion other than condensed sarcasm in Chair's voice at 11:10 was an experience. I like it.
Hardest part of Dark Knight to me is remembering Oblation exists. I've cleared the tier and I think I used it like once.
I use it a lot cause healers who are damage obsessed forget I don't heal myself like a WAR despite effectively being an edgier WAR.
It's a pretty solid cooldown if you can remember to use it, I've saved more than a few people from dying to raidwides or just general stupidity with it. I find it less than uncommon for groups to miss a raidwide mitigation check by like one cooldown so it never hurts to throw it on a healer if you're paranoid.
@@inpadin Same, if I have an extra charge of Oblation I habitually pop it on healers or, in some instances, my co tank
ngl it's pretty dope in the new ulti to have somewhere in the neighbourhood of 60% mit during the final phase akh morns
Oblation is my "I'm a little scared but I don't want to screw myself over by running out of mit next buster" button.
Blood weapon is now pressed just under 5 seconds prepull now that it's on stacks, tbn needs to be pressed at like -2 so you can get an additional mp tick to get another edge under pot and also not clip your gcd.

Wow, this actually taught me how to play DRK. None of the other guides I found gave me any useful info as someone who mained PLD and already knows tanking basics. I was struggling to understand why DRK made me feel like I was made of glass but now i understand - you're supposed to traumatize healers.
You can not convince me that “Carve and Spit” wasn’t supposed to be “Carve and Split” but they released it spelled wrong and didn’t want to look dumb so they just ran with it.
its meant to be “carve and spit” as in 2 things you do to prepare meat before cooking it, i believe

Any casual content I take WAR but goddamn hearing healers and DPS tell me to chill out as my opener sends my DPS to the moon makes it so addicting for Savage content. Also the DPS being built around the buff windows at 1 and 2 minutes gives it a flexibility that is so nice
I like DRK, I wish it was HW DRK and not just scuffed WAR but you can't win them all. Never forget you used to be able to DA abyssal drain spam and never die to trash, or just DA DP and blind the trash :)

@@aohdakibussubara8820 All tanks have more tools than they need to tackle the hardest content in the game, DSR and the Savage tier, so the most important facet is damage, where DRK vastly outstrips Warrior.
@@didac3859 As far as I’m aware dark knights “huge damage” is from its massive burst during its opener, granted it does as much as a dps but that’s just the opener. It should do more damage than a warrior looking at its kit and the amount of ogcds that hit hard.
I think the point being made is it’s pretty boring to play as it’s not got much class identity, even if the ability is unique to the class it has zero synergy with the rest of the kit outside of damage which isn’t good design as damage should not be the primary focus of a tank, it’s to survive so damage is secondary.
that's what I love about your videos: the right amount of sassy, sarcasm and actual real info. DRK is easily my favorite tank because it punishes you in dungeons if you're not careful and feels great with bosses with the big pp damage; WAR is immortal but that gets boring lol

I love DRK in dungeons for one reason, ranged AOE. Jump in > AOE > run away > ranged AOE > continue wall to wall. Maximum speed and guaranteed aggro.

I will say, to get my TBN pop more often I use it on healers for raidwides or to when they have markers.
And here I sit and ponder, "what armor/hood does this guy use? It looks fly"

I gave this video a like because Arm's Length is a mitigation ability in trash pulls. And so are Low Blow and Leg Sweep, and those who disagree are cowards

There are a lot of fights where TBN will not pop if you use it before provoking into opener, leading to a 3k mana waste, rather than a 600 mana waste from not using it. I'd recommend researching and doing the actual fights and determining for yourselves if it's worth it or not. The difference in IL from 580 and 600 also has a play in it, since the hp difference is around 7-10k or so, which will make it so that some fights pop your TBN at the lower 580 and not at 600 il. In case you determine TBN isn't worth it at the beginning, wasting the 600 mana is more worth it than delaying living shadow.

I'm pretty new to the game and DRK is my first tank job. Why? Because I hate running around Limsa Lominsa and Ul'dah. Also I heard about the great job quest line. And it really is great.

I believe obilation needs to be the normal TBN, then later on obilation upgrades to tbn which gives you a shield and the mitigation, this will remove at least one of DRK buttons, and make them have their own useful and unique shield.
On abyssal drain, the healing potency needs to be increased, or the time needs to be shortened. It makes no sense that all of drk healing abilities except LD are freaking dog, fly-ridden dodo, compared to the other tanks. LOOKING AT YOU SOULEATER. It makes no sense how they can look at GNB, WAR, PLD and then look at DRK an go "yep that heals for enough hp."

Oh dear, a banger just dropped as I was about to go level up DRK (for the 20th time, I'm gonna end up not doing it, thanks ADD), so I can actually not just be Fell Cleaver and have some sort of flexibility when it comes to tanking. Thanks Stool. :)

The only sucky thing about living dead on trash pulls is that the healer will blow all their ogcd for the express purpose of keeping LD from activating and then drop you 2 seconds after your ld window expires.
I think they just don't realize it's up, 10 sec is a pretty short window really and it only really procs if the healer panics or is too cool to use a gcd heal sometimes. Or if you have a macro that demands healers adjust to your LD proc

@SoulXCloud 14 is good but sometimes new players come and say classes are to complex so Square makes them simple to keep from losing players. A gun using class used to make you manage ammo. Now it doesn't but it does let you use ammo like attack that come in stacks of 3. Two atks. As if you have 3 bullets of each. But with SMN you were supposed to pile on poison and do quick but weak spells, while you pet did slow but strong spells. Sadly people said the pet thing was too complex and Square ditched all pet mechanic to instead just have the put appear, atk, and it is up to who to use and when. One is slow but strong. One hits rapidly. One hits rapidly but has a long power up for it's big hit finisher. But the poison spells were removed. And I asked, and other asked too, "why not give another class those poison wells?" Or why not just improve the pet guiding mechanics? No answers. It was changed. Now the people who wanted it got what they wanted. And the people who didn't want it were alienated from the class. I spent months trying to learn to love the change but I couldn't do it. It is not that tactical or fun. I even got great endgame gear for it. I hit hard with it but it's just like all the other mages. And that bores me.
Long story short I gave up on magic altogether after that. 90% of the time I play Ninja or rogues in games. I like combos and speed.
Every other tank got upgrades to their bread and butter mit with EW. Oblation looks like cooler TBN. It was definitely an upgrade trait at first, right?
I'm so happy we didn't have a dark night in my static. I would have shot myself having to swap dance partner to them for the opener.
Stressing about swapping just for an opener seems a bit over the top. I've never touched Dancer, is it complex or simple enough for that to be reasonable?

@@Gibby34340 new summoner's rotation basically doesn't change after level 50 and that is barely an exaggeration. I do not think it's possible for any of the jobs to be easier.

Man, I picked up DRK recently for SHB cuz it looks super cool but like it feels miserable after the opener. It feels like you bust a fat nut then u have post nut clarity(and not the good kind) for a while until your CDs are back up

the technicality that DRK is a magi-tank actually pisses me off to some degree...
like yes it uses MP, but it doesn't play like you would expect a magical tank would play. This annoys me. It feels like they are using MP as a limiting factor in something that doesn't need it rather then actually making the skills and abilities that need MP to work feel like they actually need MP to work. My issue is that. DRK just doesn't play like i would expect a magical tank to play. I don't know if I'm expecting something like enmity to be powered by magic, AOE skills powered by MP and Mits being powered by MP, but the way MP is used with DRK just doesn't fit. no cast times no real point to the MP usage.
HW/SB DRK did just that, actually.
@@IgnimortisTC so they did a major revision in ShadowBringers? how did it play in HW and SB? Pulling off a Maji-Tank i would assume is difficult as all get out, and from what i recall, Heavensward era Gameplay was cancer. i lived it. Getting stuck at lvl 30 something, hating THM trying to lvl my SMN. and that's not just because my understanding of dungeons and their role in lvling was crap. I didn't have the money, time or energy to invest in the game since was in college at the time. So outside the few months i played and loved parts of the game I just didn't really get to experience everything the game had to offer till recently.
@@TheObsesedAnimeFreaks Yes, they reworked the class in 5.0. It used to be a very retribution-oriented tank that used MP for Unleash/Abyssal Drain, and also used MP for Dark Arts, an oGCD which modified some of your skills to hit harder or do a different thing. To get MP back, you had to get hit under Blood Price, or hit enemies under Blood Weapon. Getting parries reduced certain CDs like Low Blow, which dealt damage in addition to stunning It also had to maintain Darkside, which constantly drained your MP (or just stopped normal regen in StB) in exchange for +20% damage. In HW, it also had Delirium, which was a debuff that lowered target's magic damage dealt by 10%, so it was really good at tanking magic damage (PLDs couldn't block spells back in HW).
Basically, it was rather more complex than the current DRK, wasn't burst-oriented (most CDs didn't even align with 60/120 second timers), and actually did have mechanics that enforced MP usage as something more than "dump it into EoS unless you'll need TBN in the next 10 seconds".

I actually cleared the current raid weeks ago as drk (after i did it as whm)... and now you tell me that oblation exists? wtf mate!? the game didnt put it on my hotbar when i leveled up ;_;
I main tank, and I main PLD. I'm leveling dark knight simply for aesthetics, but every time I run a dungeon I feel like I take much more damage than playing paladin. Is the shield that much extra defense or am I just crazy? Also, I prefer how Hollowed Ground is so much simpler. You pop it and say fuck you to everything.
From what I can tell (level 80 DRK), TBN is designs for massive single hit mitigation, hence its reward for breaking it. However, weaving it with another shield like rampart, etc. should be better in terms of overall shielding. Yeah, we DRK mains are built for pain, in more ways than one. XD
I've also been leveling drk cause it's the job I wanted to play most when I started. But until you get tbn at 70 it's honestly kind of miserable to play, it really makes you feel the agony and despair a drk needs lol. You just have to do your best to spread out your mitigations and pray your healer keeps you up. I had only played gnb until then and it was already super noticeable how squishy drk is, but I really grew to love it a lot. Even though it's painful ahahah
You shouldn't meld skill speed either, because about 35% of your damage comes from off-GCD abilities that aren't affected by skill OR spell speed.
Sadly you had to last expac to get 5 blood weapons
