I'm no military strategist but for several months I have thought the incursion into Kursk was a brilliant move to get the Russians to focus troops on that area. It's a pride thing. It takes away at least some of the manpower from other fronts.
Russian media is openly questioning why Kursk has not been liberated. As perfectly as Russia says their "special military operation" is going, the inability to take back territory in Russia mystifies Russians. It is also difficult to hide, unlike defeats in other countries.
Now turn on your head and think, where did the Ukrainian Armed Forces take the troops to break through to the Kursk region? Hint: removed from other directions, weakening them. And they continue to do this to stay there. So what's so genius about this?
Politically it is a massive embarrassment to Putin, firstly that it even happened, and secondly that despite appalling loss of lives they have only been able to push Ukraine back part of the way. The remaining presence shows that Russian military is a catastrophically weakened force.

The Ukrainians just have access to the modern civilian tech market and are able to use it in novel ways. Most of their drones are just regular civilian drones, with some retrofitted with IEDs, hell, they mostly use Discord for comms. Forced to rely on cold war surplus because they have burned through most of their modern equipment and can't make more fast enough. Lost more than a third of their navy to a country that doesn't even have one. Economy tanking, while they have become a global pariah state. Sure Ukraine has made some mistakes, but not as many as Russia it seems.

It is really the first time in decades to watch Russian tactics in actual war against another country were there is good access to information. Also, the West is seeing how well or not so well the equipment is handing things. The western equipment is doing a job on USSR/Russian equipment. Considering that the tanks are from the '80s era and other equipment is even older, Ukraine has done very well with the equipment. USSR/Russian equipment, which is the basis for a great deal of Chinese and NK weapon systems, has not done so good. There is the turrent toss event, which Russia has achieved a gold medal in. It is not a new thing. In WWII, Russian tank forces actually had the exact same loss rate as the German U-Boats(!), only ten times the actual numbers - 300.000 of 400.000 Soviet tankers died. Not because their tanks were inadequate either but because of senseless, brutal meat wave tactics. Compare that to US tank crew deaths of merely 1.000(!). Just because of sensible tactical deployment instead of pissing away good men by the hundred thousands. It boggles the mind.
"sensible tactical deployment" -- yeah, those P-47's et Al. flying CAS and Search and Destroy made a huge difference. But, don't forget, US tank forces faced a depleted German military for less than a year while the Russians faced them both at their best and from 1941-1945.

The same basically holds true for North Africa and the US tank forces. The UK et Al. had whittled the Axis forces down long before the USA showed up on that continent. The USA faced the Axis forces there for about the same length of time too. (It seems important to mention the the US forces were green troops there. In other words, North Africa was where the US learned how to fight a new kind of war.) I don't know much about tank warfare during the Italian campaign. One old photo, or newsreel, comes to mind -- a line of US tanks in dugouts with their hulls angled up; they needed more gun elevation than their tanks could manage alone. Maybe they were TD's, I don't know. Either way, Italy is hilly and mountainous --not wide open space Eastern Europe, North Africa and much of France. At least as of 15 years ago, Nk soldiers are seen by their families and home town as escaped prisoners when they return home. They beat their wife and kid, they steal the neighbors pig and eat it, get drunk and start fights... They are invincible because they are government officials. A little girl would run from their father, not into their arms, when they return home. In a lot of cases, it's probably for the better that they just never come home one year.
I don't think a lot of Russian soldiers chose to be there either, let alone their families at home. Russians are suffering for a leader that has some hallucinant idea about a great Russian empire.

I am going to say it is dependent of what matrix is used. Personnel strength is hard to say. Russia, China, and NK have large standing armies. The US would be in #4 position. Tanks, Russia was rated as #1 for tanks and had vast stockpiles of different type tanks before the war. Those stockpiles are reaching rock bottom. What is left is tanks in very bad shape and will need lots of time and money to make operational, if parts can be found. I just use two items that can measure a country's military.
Russian military strategy is to continue to do the same thing over and over regardless of the outcome. Unfortunately, Ukraine has a problem with having more drones than drone operators and it is producing drones faster than they can be used. This has forced Ukraine to use drone operators that have not been fully trained but for each drone lost, Ukraine is building five, so the drone operators have a plentiful supply to practice with and Russia is supplying plenty of easy targets for the drone operators to practice on.
Despite the narrative and the high NK losses, they have penetrated much closer to Malaya Loknya now and Ukraine forces have not been able to pinch off that salient. The shape of the front line says it all. They keep repeating the same dreadful tactics because it works and they don’t care about their losses.
The old adage of 'never interrupt your enemy whilst they make a mistake'. They make so many mistakes that at this point, I'm pretty sure it's just Russo doctrine to not learn from mistakes
