  • Barton Flats Campground, located along Hwy 38 at an elevation of over 6000 feet in Angelus Oaks, is about 26 miles drive from Big Bear Lake. The campground has 2 loops 50+ sites with good spacing between them. There is cell phone coverage at my site #29, several flushing toilets in each loop and a central shower facility. There is no hookup but there is a pay per use dump station near the entrance.
The campground is centrally located where you can go hiking directly from the campground to multiple trails. The 5+ mile round trip Rio Monte Panorama Trail is the easier trail with minor elevation changes. You'll have to hike through several adjacent campgrounds to get to the panorama point but there are good shade along the trail so it's good to go any time. Another good one is the Jenks Lake trail, about 4+ mile round trip with an elevation gain of 400+ feet. Once you get to the lake you can do a loop around it. And right from our campsite #29, you can actually go right onto the Santa Ana River trail. I'll have a separate video on the hikes.

There is a great Boy Scout Camp around the curve; we would hike up to and around Jenks Lake, and only rarely lost a scout.

@Citizen-pg8eu Yes, we've driven by. We've also camped at Heart Bar Campground, which I think used to be Boy Scout camp as well. Lots of choices in that area. Relatively straight forward hike up to Jenks Lake, and nice to go around the lake too. Hope the lake has filled back up with the recent rain.

Driving up there tomorrow for my first trip with a similar trailer. Glad to know there’s plenty of room to fit. Thank you.

I would expect the area to be very pretty green with all the rain they got!

Definitely and a few relatively easy hikes to do as well.
