(I was sent this by CI to try out for videos!) The sticky bat is great for trimming and holding all sorts of lower, wider forms. I use them for forms that are wider than they are tall. If I wanted to trim a tall form, I would use my Giffin Grip, as shown in another video. (Link: • Trimming the Foot of a... )

Thank you SO much for this video! I'm as new as the last snow to wheel throwing, and I trimmed from the outside in. No wonder my foot always looked completely wonky. I feel totally enlightened and can't wait to have another leather hard pot ready so I can practice this :D

Loving your videos! I'm taking a ceramics class at the local community college and your tips are so helpful. Quick question ... are you wetting the red rib before smoothing the pot? It looked like you might have dipped it, but wasn't sure.
Jennifer- so sorry for the delay! I didn't see this comment until this morning! Good question! If the clay is soft enough that it smooths evenly without water, I just rib without wetting. It really depends on the moisture in your claybody when you trim. I do take my fingers and clean off the edge of the rib when I get a little accumulation of clay on it! (And sometimes may have to clean that off with a sponge)
Thanks, Karan! Over the last couple weeks, I'm learning that each time I work, the clay is different. Gotta just go with the flow. Having fun! And your videos are helping with tips and things to try. I want to try it all LOL! We've done our coil project and are working on a slab birdhouse, then it's to the wheel ... can't wait!

hi, do you wash the foam after use? I just bought one and found it worked better on bigger pieces rather than holding mugs
First of all, I now tell the kids to put a towel on top to help keep it clean. But when I do need to wash it, I just toss in the washing machine!
Oh- wait- are you asking about the sticky bat? I just rinse it!

Most likely a silicone rubber. A simple alternative to the Giffin grip? or the clay wads
Is is a nice alternative, with short wide things especially. I admit, I like using a chum or chuck more than clay wads though! :)

You mean the sticky bat itself is expensive? Probably because they're the only ones making it currently?

I use foam rubber from time to time in my studio- but I’ve never bought one pre glued to a bat! I’ve thought about doing it sometime!
