HVAC REFRIGERATION: WALK IN COOLER running warm and Checking receiver level with a FLIR Thermal

- This was a late night call on. Walk in cooler high temping. Compressor was off on overload and not starting. Also using a torch and a thermal camera, we checked the receiver level of this condenser.
I just dropped this compressor off at the shop and it is a BURNOUT. 🤦🏽♂️. I didn’t check it at the site so I will have to go do a burnout procedure. Oil, refrigerant, driers, etc. dammit. Oh well. I guess it happens.

How do you go about doing a burnout test on the compressor?

Yeah. That was taken care of by another technician. Changed the oil, driers, and new refrigerant. 👍🏽👍🏽

I loved my Flir. It took a ride in the washing machine and I had to replace the battery. It lived for about another year and died for good, RIP Flir. My favorite trick was to use it on glass doors and frames to find anti-sweat heaters to replace.

If it’s locked up you can always try swapping the phase around and running it backwards for a couple seconds to see if it will break free. Works more times then not if it’s just locked up, and if it doesn’t work, well you tried. Lol

@@rookierefrigeration4357 dont be so quick, mine was about $700 and it shit the bed, unfortunately they dont make the C2 anymore and recommend if its not working to junk it when its out of warranty. I didnt, and had the battery repaired localy for $63. it could have been much more, Havent really used it all that much, but when you need it, its great, Especially on refrigeration.
These toys get expensive. If your not sure about using it that day, dont bring it. The truck is too hot and all the bouncing around is a bit too rough on it I figure.

Thanks brother! Steps On charging a walk-in with a receiver ?? , if cold you block off condenser and charge to 180 psi according to headmaster , in warmer weather just charge to headmaster 180 for yours in video…
Then what , just add till clear sight glass?
I’ve heard some estimate base charge on % receiver will hold(80%) and adjust charge from there .
Have a cracked screen so hopefully you can decipher that lol
I know a lot of guys don't like to flare driers in, but everytime I replace a compressor they get flared in with a sight glass. Makes it way easier the next time when you have to pump the system down to fix a leak. Or after a burnout u can replace the drier with just 2 wrenches instead of lugging torches on the roof.... Good work though , that's long A$$ day!
I agree. I would like to do those also, but imagine with all the accounts we have, I’d never finish or see the benefits. I’m gonna bring it up to my boss. See if he likes the idea and I’ll start doing them. Would be great not to have to get torches for a drier only.

Liebert makes a reciever tank that has two floats that look like an oil sight glass, one high, one low.... and you'll always know if the level is low. they also make a pad style heater to keep the level up during cold weather, and insulate the tanks.
are you talking about those little red floating balls that you can see on refrigeration racks? so you can see how high they rise based on the level those balls float?

Just a question, Do u think a ground test on the previous compressor would have helped as well as a continuity test? U only checked the voltage.
Not a ground test. But maybe a resistance test. This compressor was locked up so it wouldn’t run. But I should have done that.
Simple tip: Suction driers are usually added when a compressor burnout has already occurred. Systems aren’t even supposed to have more than one filter drier which is usually in the liquid line only. The moment you said “suction drier” I wanted to speed this video up.
Simp Detector I either cute then out or replace them. Depending on who the consumer is and their requirements. I don’t always get to do what I want. Lol. But I agree with you 100
@@rookierefrigeration4357 You know it all depends but if you're having compressor issues and you see a suction drier, offer to replace the compressor or unit, and do not use another suction drier. I hope you did a good flush on that unit as well.

I don't know if this was addressed, but how about a leak check? I am assuming running low on refrigerant caused the burn out. Did you check for leaks?
Not this night. The leak check was recommended to the customer. We got denied. Lol. We will just have to do it on the next “low charge” call. 🤷♂️

Yes. I have. I think I’ve only seen it work 1 time. And it still locked up. Now I just replace them.

Yeah. No there wasn’t. We can only hope it gets grounded somehow else. Lol. But I wrote it up and hopefully we can get it rewired.
What should the receiver liquid line be at during winter and summer?
Everything IS different. I line to leave them at 40-60% to ensure we have enough gas for winter.
Was the compressor the right match for the system or was the previous compressor mismatch?
According to the system information at United Ref. Yes it was.

Rookie Refrigeration they are R22 high temp for the beacon II condensers. That’s why you gotta use 404A refrigerant with this setup
If I understand it correctly OL means overload so the inrush current was too high for the meter to measure. Also I've never seen a latching contactor, lol.
You may be correct. I’ve never seen my meter not pickup inrush current. 🤷🏽♂️. Thanks for the advice
OL means open line, not overload. The meter was accidentally set in the wrong mode (resistance / continuity, not current).
OL is open line, open load, lol. Whatever. But I think the problem was the inrush was greater than what the meter could read. It was set to VAC Amps. I’ve never seen it real OL on inrush current🤷♂️
It's actually OverLoad in resistance mode too, because the resistance is close to infinite, which is more than what the meter can measure. It doesn't mean open line, even though it can be interpreted that way, it leads to confusion like in this case.

I thought about that but since it was not pulling any inrush amps, I figured it was dead. It was late and overtime. Not the time to be fishing. But I do agree with you. Maybe that would’ve worked. 🤷🏽♂️

50-50 chance it will work. If a compressor locks up, reverse the legs is not likely enough to free it up. Even if it works, the compressor will lock again. You would just be leaving it for "the next guy". 20 yrs experience and I can tell you I have come across dozens of reversed compressors that have locked up. Previous tech said "it was all good" and split.

Carlos .... contact HEATCRAFT they have some pretty good info for techs on them. You can probably find it on the inner web. But nothing better than hands on experience. Once u fuk something up you won’t do it again. Once u learn beacon II setup its actually really nice setup.

According to the guy at United it was. But I’m still kinda not convinced. I’ll have to call Heatcraft and see. Then the only thing we can do is let the customer know. 🤷🏽♂️. I needed to get them running right then, so we didn’t have time to go on a hunting expedition.
Have seen same thing multiple times on refrigeration at grocery stores and gas stations. I made sure not to tell customer so they don’t freak yet I did follow up with heatcraft/bohn on four of them and they were all correct compressors for coolers.
What would say rule of thumb on coil temp for walk in freezer and cooler.
Depends on your TD but I always like 23°.

@@derrickgarcia303 depends. If you want a box temp of -10 then you would need a -20° evap sst. This is for a 10° TDcoil.

Yup. That is correct. I wish someone who could make decisions about this would answer the phone at midnight. But they had perishable items inside the cooler and we could not wait. I brought it up the morning after. We are waiting for approval. We shall see 🤷♂️

230v in the USA is same as 225-255 depending on where u live and how much power drain on lines to drop voltage. 230 is same.
@@jphvac5725 250 is 250, no mather where you live. however the voltage for the unit can be higher when having a higher frequency 50hZ or 60Hz, about the power lines, they where almost next to the building, thats why he was avoiding to clime the ladder next to it. It is possible that voltage occasionally gets higher than the 250 he measured, what in its turn can tribute to the burn out, however in this case the faulty relay is in my opinion the case.
Your company should give you a helper that’s too much for one man job .
