R.I.P. Cliff Robertson (1923-2011), a truly great actor in such films as PT-109 (as John F. Kennedy), Charly (for which he won a Best Actor Oscar), Uncle Ben Parker in the 3 Spider-Man films.

I thought that Cliff Robertson gave the performance of his career in Charly, a project that he labored to get made in Hollywood for years; he had played the role in a television adaptation of Flowers For Algernon, and he optioned the screen rights, initially hiring William Goldman [ Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid ] to write the screenplay. Thereafter, he hired Stirling Silliphant [ In The Heat Of The Night] to re-write and Ralph Nelson directed. When he won Best Actor, Bob Aldrich wouldn't allow him to leave the set of his film, Too Late The Hero, to Robertson's regret. He was a man of great class and integrity.

The problem that year was all five performances were really, really good. It would be interesting to see the actual vote totals for that year to see how close it actually was. I would've voted for Peter O'Toole; a tremendous performance in Lion in Winter. Alan Arkin was also great in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.

Cliff Robertson also did a great job in the early 1960's playing former president John F. Kennedy in the movie PT-109. He was also great as a nasty presidential candidate running for office against Henry Fonda in the now seemingly forgotten 1964 political thriller The Best Man also with Ava Gardner, written by Gore Vidal.

    5. Alan Arkin in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter- Arkin is very good with his deaf mute role. It does not seem to be the biggest challenge ever though, and his final expressions seems off. (3.5/5)
    4. Ron Moody in Oliver- Moody gives a very enjoyable performance in Oliver. He really comes off well as Fagin and he handles his songs very well. (3.5/5)
    3. Cliff Robertson in Charly- I can take or leave Robertson's first half of his performance but his transition phase and final phase of the performance are perfect. (4/5)
    2. Alan Bates in The Fixer- Bates is very effective and gives a truly sympathetic performance. A great performance which works incredibly well. (4.5/5)
    1. Peter O'Toole in The Lion in Winter- O'Toole is plainly brilliant as Henry the second. Everyone one of his scenes he succeeds as well as possible. (5/5)
Deserving Performances:Walter Matthau in The Odd Couple, Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in The West

Cliff was filiming TOO THE THE HERO in Manila that night. He begged and pleaded with director Robert Aldrich to let him fly to LA, even offering to pay out of pocket for any costs associated with the absence. Aldrich refused. Ironically, his co-star Michael Caine had a similar issue when he won his first Oscar 18 years later.

Cliff Robertson desperately wanted to be at the Oscars in the event that he won, however, Robert Aldrich, who was directing Cliff and Michael Caine in Too Late The Hero declined to let him leave the location. It was a career best for Robertson, who had lost the opportunity to re-create his lead roles in The Days Of Wine And Roses and The Hustler. He unsuccessfully tried to generate interest in a sequel. O'Toole's best, in my view, were Lawrence Of Arabia and Becket.

They did a friends of Oscars theme. If you watch the beginning all the nights presenters are introduced. They repeated this theme in 1970, but dropped it after. I wasn’t the biggest fan. Every Oscar show should have different presenters for each award, including last year’s acting winners. Which they’ve pretty much done the last over 50 years.

Once you get nominated....really they should just honour the 5 actors each year. Jack Lemmon made that point. Robertson's performance was great, but the film suffered from over direction and that might have unfortunately impacted on how people view Robertson as Charly Gordon. Just occured to me that Lancaster would have made a great Jor-El in an earlier 'Superman' film project.

I think Peter was a close second since Kate won for her role in LIW. The studio took out a lot of complimentary ads praising Robertsons performance from critics.
