Picked up my needles again after a 25 year break.... Thankyou for reminding me how to sew pieces together .... completely forgot this technique !!! Explained wonderfully and acheived a truely professional finish. Thankyou for sharing your wisdom xx
Thank you N.L. and you are so welcome. I taught this class live for several years before I ever committed it to video (in 1992!) with a professional producer. Have you joined my email newsletter tribe over at cherylbrunette.com yet? If not, I hope you'll consider it. That's where I keep in closest touch with knitters and I give out a ton of good information.
I teach about all that in the book, SWEATER 101. I even give a method in which you hardly have to do any math. A dear engineer friend helped me figure out the method over several pots of tea. He died within the past year and I love that he has left a sweet knitting legacy with the book though he never picked up a pair of needles. He loved it too.
now i would only need to know how to calculate when to decrease for such a smooth set-in-sleeve. is there a formula for it? if not, i guess i'll rather stick to the drop-shoulder and bottom-up-raglan... but your videos have already inspired me to better my technique for seaming!! thank you!
Yes. You may use a thinner, smoother yarn or even embroidery floss to seam sweaters. I especially like to use a different yarn for a fuzzy mohair or bouclé yarn. I don't make many bulky garments because I'm already bulky enough :) but you could use a thinner yarn or different yarn for almost any well done seam in a sweater.
I notice this is done w/ thin yarn. Is there a way to seam. Sweater knit w/super bulky yarn but with less bulk at the seam from doing doing it the way it shown here? Thanks. This is video is helpful for my other projects.
Aha! You caught me out. The original was shot on BetaCam with a macro lens and was very clear. The duplication house that had the master tells me it is lost, or at least that they don't have it. So I took an old VHS copy and ran it through my VHS player and TV back to my miniDV camera (Canon GL2) to come up with the footage to put it on TH-cam. Hence, not as clear because I was coming from VHS 1/2 inch tape. Video masters are very valuable. If they truly lost them, it's bad business.
if he has left something for the world, he's not gone. ^_; a friend found a german webpage to calculate sweater margins, so now i have everything i need... thank you!
camera focus could have been a fraction clearer..that's it,you could not have not have been any clearer in description and direction!! Bravo! And many thanks indeed.
DO YOU KNIT THE FIRST STITCH OF YOU KNITTED PROJECTS. BECAUSE THE EDGES OF YOU SWEATER ARE VERY NICE AND FLAT, THEY ARE NIT CURLING. YOUR VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS ARE VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND!
I knit the knits and purl the purls on stockinette st. I use a mattress stitch to finish. The edges want to curl but I am holding them flat. Once you sew them the curls pull against one another and make it flat. Thank you for watching and commenting.
The armpit is part of this seam. It's the beginning and the end,. If you do the seam as I show you and fold the sweater in half you will see that you have only the sleeve and body seams left.

For a striped sweater, would you change colors of seaming yarn for each stripe? Is the seaming yarn likely to show at all?
