  • Did you know that: Silage undergoes anaerobic fermentation, which starts about 48 hours after the silo is filled, and converts sugars to acids. Fermentation is essentially complete after about two weeks.

Many memories. Dad and I used to run three JD 38's and a JD three row self propelled back in the late 70's. We custom chopped 200,000 tons of silage per season out in Eastern Washington State for commercial feed lots.

That is a chopper, it takes the whole plant to be fed to the cattle as a total feed vs a combine that separates the grain from the fodder (everything else). Silage is fed as a total ration (mostly) vs corn and hay ration.

It would be awesome if you could describe all the things you can adjust on a combine. That would be really interesting to know.

We fill a 20 by 90 harvestore with corn silage and the unloader handles it just fine

I LIKE the smell of corn silage(kinda like sweet pickled corn) but you're right, haylage DOES smell sweeter.

Very nice video! I have a JD 35 pull type forage harvester and a FH 25 1 row for fun.
Here in Holland you don't see pull type machines anymore. See my videos of our oldtimer haksledag here in Holland.
    Great Appie Nijland

Do you have a processor for the cernels (corncracker) in that chopper?
Can you tell me about the yields? How much corn silage can you harvest per acre or hectar?

It might smell but it's like CANDY to the cattle. The raunchier it is the better they like it.
