Metal is the most diverse genre out there so it makes sense, if you want to get into some bands let me know, I can recommend something not as grating and abrasive.

I am a metalhead and I listen to gamelan, jazz, trance goa, post rock, dark ambient, folk, throat singing, etc... If you like metal (real metal, not just nu metal) you're more predisposed to listening to other stuff. There are still a few genres I don't listen to at all like reggae or rock ska, coz they don't make me feel anything, but I'm certainly more open to new things than most people. It's also a new cultural thing. If you listen to death metal, you can find thousands of people who share your passion on the internet. But back in the 80s and 90s you just had to listen what was thought as cool or you'd get your ass handed to you at school. Luckily, popular music back then was much better than popular music right now...

I was just going to mention that, after binge watching the metal "what's in my bag" they have the most varied taste in music! (also not a metal head) They are also the coolest guys, the guys you'd love to hang out with, or go to record stores with!

I listen to really extreme punk and metal, genres such as grindcore, powerviolence, and grindviolence. However, I love, love, love mellow, ambient sounds and Latin jazz, as well as American standards jazz. For instance, Zero 7 and Antonio Carlos Jobim are two of my all-time favorites. I think that genres like metal and punk have to be tempered by music that's much less intrusive and dissonant.
I love watching the "What's in My Bag" video series, b/c it opens my eyes to so many varied types of artists that I, otherwise, might never learn about. It's almost like a verbal version of Pandora, where I get recommendations directly from musicians I like to listen to.

    Some interesting picks, pretty obscure.
Not usually the "it all sounds the same" guy but all thrash sounds the same, if you want to cover the entire genre in your collection you can pretty much just buy about 2 albums.
There's not much ground to cover in the thrash world, although I'm sure hardcore thrash connoisseurs will beg to differ.
I used to dig it in my younger days but now it all just sounds like wallpaper to me.

I love it, breaking the cliches of the "Metalhead" on most of these WiMB. But when Broderick (been a fan since Jag Panzer) mentions Meshuggah's "I", I'm not only proud of being a Metalhead, but also a Meshuggahner since 1995. The "dexterity" and skill to play the opening of "I" is . . . . its amazing their arms (and Haake's feet) didn't just fall off . . . as they continue on to the rest of the "song" :p. It's no wonder they don't play it live.
I hope you guys at Amoeba recognize "Steve Wilson", "Mikael Akerfeldt" and "Mike Portnoy" when they individually come to LA on tour and stop in, HUGE audiophiles. Say hello to _Robert Blackburn_ for me :).
