Koda is a genius. You should definitely put that mat up again one day and do a sleepover with all the animals together upstairs. See if Koda will stay there all night or walk back down.
I know Chelsea doesn't want to leave the rubber mat on the stairs, but an idea for a video! What if you left the mat on both sets of stairs, set up the cameras and see if Koda uses them? Either during the day, or at night when you all are asleep. Or if you guys leave the house?
@@kinjalksharma8420 Assuming he/she still uses stairs with gaps, he/she is the opposite of a coward. being a coward is not being scared of something, it's actively avoiding what/who scares you, and depending on the situation it can be called being smart.
I can’t believe Koda can actually do the stairs but it was just the scary no back board to the stairs was the problem. Koda I’m also like you on those kind of stairs too.
When I was young, a friend of mine had see-through stairs in her house and I had never seen these because it was a new thing (late 70s). I was terrified and always thought I would slip through the holes.
Maybe you guys should leave the mat for a bit longer? Then greet him every morning at the mid-level and encourage him to come up at least half of the stairs to let him get use to the feeling of overseeing the whole floor in mid-air, as a Great Pyrenees maybe he would grow to love it!
my dog is also afraid of stairs, he is a lab and the stairs don't have those in betweens so i guess some dogs are just afraid of heights. he won't even walk on a bridge
It might have also been how slippery the bare wood is. If he felt like his back paws were slipping, he might have been scared about falling down (which the rubber mat would also fix).
Koda is like the most loveable cutest dog that just sticks by ur side and is there if ur down then cooper is like let me distract you and make u feel happy
My friend's dog slipped down their wooden stairs and hurt his back really bad. She also put a non slip runner on stairs. He was afraid for a long time remembering the awful slip and hurt back injury.
its amazing how much one experience can shape a dog's behaviour. my aunt's dog was startled by the bluetooth speaker startup noise while he was going down the stairs once, and just that made him sketched out by both those stairs, and the bluetooth noise ever since. he hates going down those stairs so much that sometimes he has to go backwards or he wont do it at all lol. i'm a dog walker and sitter and see stuff like this all the time, one random thing can change things for a dog forever. actually because of this, when trev just had the runner weighted down with the rocks instead of securing it more, i was afraid that koda would slip and i figured if he had one bad experience with these stairs it was basically all over and thered be no chance of ever getting him up them again. so im glad that he had success today!
Technically, for those who have remember and been watching for around 6 years, Koda did slip and fell down the stairs on the first day he saw this house.
I honestly think its more of a texture thing then being able to see past the stairs, maybe figure out a thing that has more grip to put on the stairs that looks good, or get a couple of runner carpets to put on there, that way it looks good but still functions for him to come and be part of the family with you all upstairs.
Leave the rubber on the entire staircase for a month and get him in a routine of going upstairs and then take the rubber away. Maybe he will still use the stairs. Or hire someone to put wooden back plates on the stairs so it still looks nice and he can use them.
Thank you so much for making people smile every Sunday. Currently my dog is getting rescued from a lake, my parents told me to go home (since I was crying so much) and I’m home now. I’m watching this video to get my mind off it. Hopes to my dog Leah. 🙏
@@gingerslife4856 Yes!! She just came back healthy from the ambulance, they gave her some warm chicken broth and some heated blanket! They were super nice! She all good!! !!!
I mean I wouldn't feel safe walking up those stairs, as clumsy as I am so I totally feel Koda. I have to try the snack thing on my dog. He too would do stairs as a puppy and now is afraid of them, but they are solid, with walls on both sides. Also I love how fascinated with this whole process Bella was.
Aww 🥰 AWESOME JOB Koda !!!! How crazy is that …? I can understand his insecurities. He doesn’t feel safe but I hope yall consider putting that mat all the way up for him. He’s so sweet. I’m most excited about his willingness to go up the stairs with the black mat . It’s all about feeling secure.
Pretty sure it's how slippery the steps are is why he loses confidence. Look at 2:13 when he puts his front paw up and it starts to slide forward. He doesn't feel safe on them. I would be extra careful with an older dog on those steps without some kind of carpet tile down or some other textured grip on the stairs.
Besides the opening between each of the stairs, it might also be the traction the rubber runner gives Koda as he goes up and down. The stairs in your current house appear to be very slippery and I bet Koda thinks so too! He's such a big guy I don't blame him for being cautious and not wanting to get hurt; especially if he slipped and fell on those stairs in the past! Thanks for the fun and entertaining videos with Koda and Cooper... oh and Bella and the 2 of you too. Very cute! 😍💜😊
by the choices you gave Cheles I'm surprised by all three. Also I love how Koda's favorite treats are these little teeny tiny treats that he could swallow like a pill.
💓.Koda's hairy toes must feel so slippery on the hard polished wood of the stairs. I'm not surprised he is scared. A nice carpet runner would help him feel a secure grip under his paws and look stylish 💓.(and it would also soften the noisy echo and reverberation that rebounds around the house due to the size and hard surfaces) 💓.
Totally agree. No way would my Lab go up or down those stairs. You have to remember that the pads of their paws are "dry" (not "sticky" - or clammy - like our palms) and not made for walking on slippery surfaces - especially not when climbing and descending!
He might also be scared of his feet slipping! You probably already know this, but they sell little pads for your stairs so that he can get the grip with his lil feets as he walks up. You can tell he got a lot more confident when he felt that he wasn't sliding when he stepped on the stairs!!
The next step is to gradually reduce the amount of steps covered by the rubber mat. For example, you could uncover the first step or two and then after a week uncover one more etc.
I was thinking maybe the stairs are too slippery for his foot pads. If the back part is scary, maybe you could just put something on the back of each stair to make it so you can't see through it.
I got the impression, Koda may have had a bad experience with steps when he was younger. Also I agree about those steps, wouldn't walk down those with just socks myself.

I feel like the reason he’s scared of the stairs is because he can see the in betweens, but also because he probably slips and is scared of falling

I like the idea of adding temporary wooden back plates. Once Koda is confident with going up and down, they could take the wooden plates off.
Or like they can screw polished wood pieces in the gaps so it doesn't look bad
It might be difficult to put a permanent thing at the back because I don’t think they bought the house so they would need to ask.
