The Masters was always my favorite tournament but with The Open podcast, these films, & the book "The Greatest Game Ever Played", I am starting to find how much more I appreciate The Open. I look forward to next summer. I hope it is played. Harry Vardon is the real MVP.

Trevino wins in the most amazing manner, Nicklaus is denied a shot at the grand slam, and Jacklin is broken...EDIT: So, now, after watching it, a couple of thoughts. It's a treat to see shots from Jack's charge early in the 4th round. I had never seen the lip-out on 15 and didn't know how short of a putt he had missed at 16. How close he came to what would have been one of the very greatest final round comebacks in majors history, one that would have put him just a PGA away from the Grand Slam! Wow. Finally, regarding the narration. It's of course a treat to listen to Henry Longhurst anytime for any length of time. Still, his understated, after-the-fact calling of Trevino's remarkable shots doesn't quite capture the near-absurdity of those moments in the way that other live broadcasts do, some of which are also available on TH-cam.

What a great tournament! Nicklaus played great but missed that putt while Trevino chipped in and Jacklin 3 putted 17. Great drama. It was between those 3 at the end. What a miraculous victory by Trevino. Back to back British Opens similar to Palmer '61 & '62 - Trevino '71 & '72. Jack was runner- up to Lee again. His chief rival in the early 70's. Between 1968 - 1974 they each won 5 majors. Jack won before those years and after but during those 7 years Lee was right there with the best. Player btw won 4 majors in those years. Great stuff.
Right. Arnie and perhaps Gary Player were almost as good as Jack 1960-66. Trevino was almost as good as Jack 1968-74. Watson was roughly as good as Jack 1975-82. But it was always Jack against whom the others were measured (at least after he overtook Palmer).

Palmer won seven majors from '58 - '64. Player won 9 majors between '59 - '78. Awesome. Jack dominated golf from '62 - '80 winning 17 majors and topping it off with 18 in '86 with that great Masters performance. Watson won 8 majors between '75 - '83 and was Nicklaus chief rival in the later years. Nine years of dominance. Great players.

The players mentioned above seemed to have a purple match lasting maybe 7/8/9 years. nicklaus's lasted almost 20 years... legend...

Wonderfull, just wonderfull stuff. The sun drenched haze of the open. Muirfield a very tough course and is so sadly left out of the open roster. But this here is priceless. Jack's sunday charge, almost pulled it off. Trevino just a genius, ok you need luck when pitching in but thats exactly what he was trying to do. And he did it 4 times in the footage i saw. Great wind player trevino with his low ball flight. 17 th on sunday changed tony jacklin's life. Pitching just off the front for his 3 rd, par 5, trevino on the fairway dissinterested, commentator said trevino has conceded, body language, whare he was etc. But when jacklin pitched up to 15-18 feet away and not 5-7 feet away, trevino with those genius hands was trying to pitch in. And bang in it went. Jacklin's head was probably gone a bit. Missed and then the collosal presure on the 2 nd putt, he missed it. Trevino from nowhare 1 ahead playing 18. Regrouped himself and that 2 nd shot into 18 was a beauty. Put the tournament to bed. Jacklin's head i dont think ever got over that 17 th, Jack N had it in him to go on and win bundles of majors and tournaments. Which he did. Had a great mind to be a winner. And a steely look in the eye. Woods the only person came close and an equal to jack. I dont no but there is something wonderfull and sad about this in 1971. A by gone era with something very special to it. The top players were in a small bracket. Now they are everywhare and mega rich. Win 1 tournament on the USPGA tour now you have won over a million dollars. Whare as these guys i dont no how much they won. But a beautiful video, thanks for putting it up.
Well said. So much drama to this championship that I was never aware of. I'm grateful that this wonderful footage is available. That last round was as amazing as any final round I've ever seen. Nicklaus down 6 at the start catches Trevino early on the back nine but misses those two shortish putts. I've never known about the chip-in at 17 for Trevino. It's as pivotal a shot as Watson on 17 at Pebble or Tiger's on 16 in Augusta. Poor Jacklin got punched in the gut on that one. Was going to finally bring it home for England.

Thats true but its not really working out for them now is it? Roughs are brutal nowdays and I hardly see an advantage of bombing it long for a tough rough wedge as opposed to hitting the fairway and have a nice second shot albeit 20-30 yards shorter.

When he missed a birdie at the 18 hole he put his putter on his shoulder and his face reaction tells it all. We all seem to agree those last three shots on 17 finished Tony's international career. Crazy. Not a spectacular implode just 3 average shots that any pro could do on the home stretch. Sure the chip was tentative but he can't help telling himself Trevino MUST take 6. We've all watched it but how could Jacklin walk off with a 6 and Trevino a 5? I mean....it's impossible!

It didn't look good for Lee on 17.Three chip ins and the last one on 17 was the one he needed the most.Jack missed two short very makeable puts that last round that would have put in rt there.

First prize money 5500 pounds, likely about 10K US dollars. These days Lee would be better off going back to caddying. lol A caddy that wins a major these days is making 15 or 20 times that amount of money..
If I was Trevino's caddy I would have left all of those clubs laying on the ground that Trevino kept throwing at him. I dont recall Trevino throwing clubs like that and behaving like a child.
