    I looked up comments on a book about Annie Wilkins who at age 63 rode from Maine to California in the mid 50s. Several said “ a person couldn’t do that nowadays “. I’m glad to see you proving that wrong, that there are still good people out there in the world.

    I love Bella! She is a true friend. And, such a beauty. It was neat to hear her story. It was also neat to hear the story of Butch Cassidy stopping by. My great great grandma, Matilda Davis lived in Duchesne Utah. Butch Cassidy and some of his gang helped on their farm from time to time. My great grandma, Maude Davis, against her parent’s will, ended up marrying a member of the gang. His name was Elzy Lay. She lived in one of the gangs hideouts with the bunch and had a daughter, Marvel with Elzy Lay. He never gave up his lifestyle and Matilda divorced him and moved back home. Elzy Lay later went to jail and while there made good friends with the guy in charge of the prison. One day that man’s wife was kidnapped and Elzy Lay helped get her back somehow (most likely he orchestrated the whole thing since he was the brains and planner for Butch Cassidy). But, when the wife was saved and was safe the prison warden let Elzy Lay go early from prison. He went on to marry another woman and raise a family. My great grandmother, raised their daughter, Marvel and remarried and had more children. One of them was my Grandfather. She endured many hardships as her 2nd, 3rd, and 4th husband each died early. Elzy Lay came to his daughter, Marvel’s Highschool graduation in Heber City, Utah after not seeing her for years. I thought I’d share her story that all began from meeting Butch Cassidy. Can’t wait to see how your week goes in the next video. Good luck! It is neat to see that folks are kind and help out where they can. Stay warm and safe!

    Hello from Durango! We heard about you after you had come through, many people have been talking about you. 😊 I know several horse (and mustang) lovers that would have loved to host you. Maybe it’d be worth posting your upcoming locations for this purpose?
    It would be cool if the horse community connects with their friends on your route to line up places to stay, food, showers etc. I’m sure many would love to host & support you!
    ALSO…Fantastic video, filming, & beautiful stories, especially about Belle!

    Saw you and your horses on 160 between Durango and Pagosa was trying to help you out because I thought you were waiting for an outfitter. And your horses looked like they needed some nourishment from a long ride. Sorry I didn't realize the knowledge and preparedness you had done for your trip. After seeing your video understand why you didn't want a ride. Good luck my friend to you and your horses. Stay safe. Will be following your videos. I have a mustang too and they are great horses

    Jake, you're a good man. You got this! I know you're already in Colorado, but if you're coming through Arizona on the way back, you're welcome here on my homestead. I have mustangs, I raise my own meat and food and I'll make you a great meal and put your horses up, you're welcome to all the hay and water they can take on if you'd like. I'm proud of you. It's wild to think you're half my age. I still feel as young as you. Either way, keep on going. You got this for sure.

    You heard the story about white horses being seen too easily over the night and supposed to be the night time protector since it’s needs to stay more alert. Due to that fact and vulnerability. They are all special in some way and I guess! Read that from the author who lived the book. Naked Liberty. Its a great read if you need something to read over this fantastic journey. I still have my forst horse. Got her at two. Shes a tennessee walker bred for show and I feel I saved her from all that mess. Shes 23 1/2 and has moonblindness. Full time face mask is all there is for it and im glad that is working well. I keep a horse for her so she’s got her herd here at home ….this horse poor home old lady staying the course for her. You take care!

    Love the story about Butch Cassidy! My folks both grew up in and around Dolores. They had just told us another story about him a few weeks ago. They grew up with a man that had been a child when the robbery of the Telluride bank happened. He and some other kids were playing around the water tank in Stoner, above Dolores, when Butch Cassidy and some of his gang rode up on their way through, directly after the bank robbery. They told the kids to go home, because something was about to happen. The kids went and hid in the bushes. Sure enough, when the train rolled up, they made everyone get off, and give them their valuables, including their hats. Apparently Butch Cassidy had lost his in the robbery, and needed another one. Then they let everyone get back on, and the train went on it’s way. As they rode off, he yelled into the bushes that the kids could come out now as it was all over. Great story!😊

    You are certainly trying to do this the right way, keeping your horses safety and health in mind, but for the life of me, I can't think of a good reason why someone would choose to do this. Back in the day, when crossing America meant a chance to own your land and attain a new life, using animals was the only way it could be done. That's not the case today, and I think the horses would agree with me. I'm not thinking the horses would say "Yeah, let's go 7000 miles," if they could talk. Still, if this is something you always wanted to do, I am glad that you are putting your horses' welfare first.

    • @jakeharvath
      @jakeharvath  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, they are acutely aware of their surroundings and only sleep for short stretches at a time like most prey animals. Of course, in this country there's not too much left that will try to take down a 1200 lb. horse. Great question.

      In the morning, then in the evening once I set up camp and then all night long as they are picketed on a 25 foot rope allowing them to move around in a large area to graze at will. I also stop and take a break for 15-20 minutes, every 2 hours or so during the day and they can graze then. All that said, so many good people have offered us a place to stay along the way and in those cases they have always been given good amounts of hay, on top of the grazing they still get to do. Great question!
