With respect to the geofence, I believe it alerts you when it exits the "fenced" area, not when the device enters it. It kind of looked like you were trying to do the opposite (have it alert you when crossing INTO the designated area).
Which tracker did you find the best? We tried the Tracktive but it needs cellular, which is too spotty here. considering at the Aorkuler tracker now. Cellular based ones won't work for us.

When the Findster fell off why couldn’t you locate it just as if it stayed on your dog?
No. It would have had to be on and in active tracking mode unfortunately
