What My Autistic Son Eats In A Day

  • This week is World Autism Awareness Week so I am doing a slightly different style of video.
My little boy Finn is four years old and has autism. It is very common for autistic children to be picky eaters, for a variety of different reasons. I go into more detail about the reasoning behind this here: www.myfussyeater.com/autism-f... but I thought it might also be helpful for other parents if I showed an average day of eating for Finn.
If you have an autistic child I would love to hear their experiences with food and mealtimes. Maybe we can all help eachother to learn and understand it a bit more.

I’m an Autistic person and I struggle with issues around food. It has taken me years of dedication to reach where I am today. I will now eat many types of food but only when it’s bought in a certain place and I have made it myself or bought it in a prepackaged portion (for example, I will only eat sandwiches that are prepackaged because I know exactly what’s in them, the size and taste.) I also eat at very unusual times and hardly ever in front of other people. I think you’re right about your son finding dinner too much after a long day. I actually go to bed for a few hours to rest because I get so exhausted and can’t deal with the stress of dinner. I then wake up and have my dinner. It’s the only way I can manage it as there is less sensory overload at night and I am able to eat my food when I’m calm and comfortable. I tried to get out of this routine as the people around me discouraged it but since I have allowed myself to listen to what my body and mind need, I’ve been a lot happier and have been eating a lot more. I went from eating only tinned peaches to having a healthy varied diet! 🙂 Keep up the amazing work, I think it’s wonderful that you are so understanding of your son’s needs. You’re a brilliant mum! ❤️

Loved this video, as a mother of a 4 yr old ASD/spd boy i can see I'm not alone with the food fights and picky eating! currently my boy wont eat any meat, eggs or fish except bacon, wont eat any potatoes or rice only specific pasta shapes (twists or spaghetti) and only with plain passata over it, wont eat any vegetables but will eat any fruit and cucumber. He eats most cereals and bread (wholemeal and no crusts ), cheese( only grated or small squares), milk and yoghurts(only smooth no bits). Dinner is challenging as he wont eat what the rest of the family eats it always has to be pasta with passata and grated cheese or spaghetti with bacon and cheese, or pasta shapes in tomato sauce on toast, cheese on toast etc. If i serve him what we typically eat ie stir fry, roast dinner, rice and Bolognese etc he will have a huge meltdown, throw food and drink, self harm etc So i kind of just give him what i know he will eat and sometimes put what we have on a separate plate close by so he can see it. Some days he touches it, licks it etc and gets lots of praise for that. Its challenging daily but we pick our battles lol

My friend's kid only eat Pretzel, oreo cookies and Gold fish crackers daily as regular meal. He will eat french fries occasionally when he was being offered and that was the only closest "prepared" food. He only softdrink (coke and ginger ale) and occasionally chocolate milk (milk with Nesquik chocolate powder). Sometimes they have feed him with gummies vitamins to offset what he is missing from his diet. He has been doing that for years since he was just few years old. I was told he would eat real foods (meat and other foods) during a certain phase long time ago. Is there a way to convince him to change his diet? He is non-verbal.

HI, thanks for sharing your family's story. watching these videos on other moms with autistic children really help me alot. I'm a single mom to a 3year old boy on the ASD. my son has a HUGE food aversion among other stuff. I've been thinking about starting my own channel about our experiences as a Single parent with a child on the spectrum living in Canada. In the beginning I refused to acknowledge that my son was different, it didnt help that I had so many ppl telling me "he's fine, theres nothing wrong with him, hes not autistic, he looks normal.. etc" (which i later found out is a common thing including the guilt phase I just wish I would have found other moms sooner so I didnt feel so alone during this process which is one of my motivations for wanting to create my own channel) and when i finally accepted his diagnosis It hit me like a ton of bricks. It almost felt like i was mourning a lost of a child... I didn't want to tell anyone, and for awhile I felt like it wasn't anyone's business, I wanted to preserve my son's right to privacy and as some time has gone by since his diagnosis and after doing my research and looking for other moms like me I've been thinking about sharing our Story to help bring more awareness and with April being Autism awareness month I thought now would be a good time as any to start vlogging about it. I feel like it would benefit us alot too. I guess my biggest concern is getting judge for sharing our story. but after reading so many positive comments on your videos and other's I think I might start... I have a few pretty good ideas for content but I dont know how to begin tho. Is there a video editing app you use to create YT videos? anyways thanks for letting us take a look into your lives. hope to start uploading within the next couple weeks.

Great to see what your son eats. My son is also autistic and very fussy too! He eats weetabix with milk or Frosties without milk for breakfast. These are the only two things he will eat for breakfast. It’s extremely hard to get him to eat any fruit. He will eat pasta in a tomato sauce only which I can hide lots of vegetables in but he won’t touch any veg unless it’s smothered in gravy/ketchup/salad cream. He will eat hotdogs and burgers but again only with some type of sauce. Cheese on toast, salt and vinegar crisps and jam sandwich cream biscuits are the only other things he will eat so his diet isn’t very varied or particularly healthy unfortunately.

Love this video Ciara. I struggle on a daily basis with Lewis, he's 11 now and used to eat beautifully but I've given into him time and time again with public melt downs and private ones too and his diet is pretty appalling now. I don't expect anyone to get this unless they're in the same boat. You are doing an amazing job, don't do what I did, it's difficult getting back on the right road. Does your son have SPD too, if so certain textures/smells may offend his sense. It's worth keeping a note to see if there's a pattern to the food he eats and avoids...if there is I could help with dinner ideas xxx

I send them to school each day. They have to be cut up in squares with no crust. He only eats blueberry frosted. He refuses to eat new foods. I give him a vitamin supplement each day. I worry so much about him but hopefully as time passes he will try new things. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I got an autistic child too, I avoid processed food like ham, or dairies. most are cooked fresh which is really tricky. I avoid sugar so he rarely have sweets. Otherwise I get those gluten free desserts. Processed food and sugar triggers the bad bacteria in their gut thus something that needs to be avoided. use of coconut is very beneficial so i use it everyday but his intake would be in small quantity in any forms (otherwise he ends up with diarrhea). Fry food in coconut oil. Do chicken korma. Or add little bit to his coconut milk. It is so tricky because all of 4 have to have the same...

Hello, thank you for this video. My LO struggled with food so much, he became malnourished under my watch. It was so depressing I must say. I had to try different textures cos my goal was to get him nourished one way or the other.
I started with mashed potatoes and very soft sweet potatoes. I made sure I cooked his chicken to be very soft. I tried different flavours, strangely he liked hot and spicey and also sweet taste.
I let go of bread, weetabix, cow's milk and the likes.
Above all I prayed fervently for God to help this innocent child.
Thankfully, he enjoys rice now (boiled soft), chicken, tomatoes sauce, semolina, potatoes, soft boiled pasta, sausages, mushy peas.
I feel in his case it was the texture that was a problem.
I am grateful and I pray this encourages mums out there struggling with this issue.

My daughter is the same she has sensory issues and is very picky she doesn’t eat bread at all unless it’s toasted or I’ve handmade flatbread for her . Over the years she has only liked crunchy dry cracker type of snacking and nuts . She doesn’t drink milk at all and her cereals are dry as well she has a lot of carrots texture type of foods. Loves strawberry citrus fruits as well . The trick to getting her to eat more of the foods she’s suppose to eat is really mixing textures and experimental food instead of plain rice cooked to perfection I have also tried to give her more of almost cooked rice with more bite and grain consistency. You just have to really experiment on likes and dislikes to get it right . Try taking him to the store in very quiet hours and help him pick out what he likes to eat I find that helps me with her a lot . Awesome video by the way .

If my child could eat only 10% of what your eat, I d be so over the moon!!! he eats only 3 things since he fell sick 6 months ago: Tesco vanilla ice cream ( T_T), cherry tomatoes in a very specific balsamic dressing and a homemade smoothie in which I try to put all the vitamins, fatty acids, fibers and proteins he should have for the day. For the first time in months this week, he tried a few tiny bits of strawberries, bananas, fish fingers and meat. I know how frustrating that is. I bought bananas for a whole year until my 3yr old started eating them again like when he used to as a baby. Vitamins and pro biatics are very important to sneak in their cups. All my kid eats right now is spaghetti and chic nuggets. My meal preparation looks like a buffet. And I know it can be expensive, but as a mother, what can we do but to love them and try and try to meet their needs. Don't give up on foods. Keep up.the good job. All he has is you so let's do this...you got this!! Stay safe. God bless!!

Oh and I know it sounds bad, but try some tv time while she eats. That really helps my kid eat like on this video. My kid watches his fav video on you tube and it makes him kinda forget what's in front of him. It can take an hour of looking at the food and smelling his fav food, but in the end even after hours, he will dig right into what he normally eats.

i used to eat EVERYTHING given to me, but after i was diagnosed, i started to eat less and less and now i eat like a 6 yr old. i hate many vegetables and fruits, mostly texture problems or taste. your son is lucky he can eat relatively healthy and have not as many issues. i think its cause i was/still am growing up on kool aid, pizzas, mac and cheese, etc.

Hello Some people say that autism is not curable and they might be right. I myself was diagnosed as a patient of bipolar disorder and was told that it not curable.
I took medicine such as Sodium valproate valence od, licab xl, lamotrigine, cipralex for 18 years i am almost 37 now, but i was having a lot of side effect.
NOW I am meds free. I follow a gfcf diet, i have replaced wheat with rice usually parboiled rice, i have stopped eating husk of fruit or vegetable such as tomato, Potato, eggplant, apple even almonds. I DO all frying in ghee only i use vegetable oil in daal as tadka only.
I dont eat any packaged food only fresh food prepared from vegetable and fresh bread roti chapati made at home with sorghum flour .
I have stopped any soft drink ice cream or even cake .

My 14 yr old is on the spectrum and I'm honestly starting to suspect my 2 year old might be as well. He's almost 3 and had food allergies. I can't hardly get him to eat anything. He will go all day without eating or just have some fruit. It drives me crazy. I can't even get him to stay at the table half the table. I honestly don't know what to do.

My 3yr old is on the spectrum. We struggle at dinner time as well. I also have a hard time with getting her to sit at the table so we normally sit at her table in the playroom.
A lot of time she ends up having breakfast for dinner because she normally wants eggs and bacon or sausage. I also let her help me make breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, etc. I find it makes the food more enjoyable which helps her eat it.

We don’t know what it’s like raising this child, what he will eat and won’t. So I don’t blame a mom trying to feed her child. I can tell his mom loves him and is caring. But it surprises me too that she doesn’t cut gluten and casin. He basically ate a bunch of refined wheat flour and sugar all day.
