  • Alan Snowdon began filming his travels in 1958, uniquely capturing steam’s eleventh hour, long gone lines and glimpses of life in the UK & overseas.
As a signalling engineer and preservation enthusiast, he was especially informed & passionate about railway operations, but championed all public transport.
As Alan aged, his film legacy became a family endeavour; son Robin continues the work of sharing Alan’s archive here and wife Heather voiced much of his narration.
Please subscribe, as we’ll be publishing all of Alan’s unseen films here, with many more continental and British journeys coming soon.
Please consider clicking the heart$ to SuperThank a small donation to digitizing Alan's unseen cine films (& to clean/rescan those previously published) to HD video, so all can view Alan's Archive here on TH-cam for free, forever.
We treasure your likes, shares & comments supporting the films, especially swapping memories or younger audience feedback; newly discovering a bygone age.

I was born in the 80's so missed steam on the mainline by 20 years. I caught the bug from my late Dad, and have always loved railways. I first discovered Alan's videos a few years ago, absolutely remarkable footage and a goldmine for folks like me, capturing as you say - a bygone age. Thank you for your ongoing work to share Alan's legacy with the world.

Through Alan’s videos, I’ve been able to catch glimpses of they heyday Britain’s railways from a distance here in Australia. Many are so very evocative, and I find I’m often watching them over and again. Thank you for continuing Alan’s legacy. Vale Alan.

Thank you for sharing Alan’s legacy through film. I am fascinated by past transport especially railways and the northern lines where I live. I used to live at Garsdale Station in the 80s, my sister still lives there so it was fantastic seeing the Settle to Carlisle cab view from 1967, the year I was born.
    Again thank you.

I am very sorry to hear that Alan has passed away.
As a young boy I remember watching Railway Roundabout on TV in the early sixties.
When the series came out in video / dvd i was delighted because I thought they were the best record of British and Continental railways in the early sixties.
Well I was wrong as Alan's are even a better and more authentic record.
I look forward to seeing more of the archive

I'm very sorry to hear Alan has passed away.
I had an inkling he had some involvement with signalling as he always made sure to capture signalling content, now invaluable footage. As a signalling researcher myself this is one aspect of his films I particularly enjoy.
Please do keep posting his films up and I very much enjoy your narration. Well done for keeping the silent footage silent. So many uploaders on TH-cam seem to think their audience incapable of watching in silence so insist on either dubbing on fake sounds or grossly irritating music.
You give a lot of people a lot of pleasure by sharing these wonderful films. Thank you.

Alan’s films are more than just a family endeavour. They are a valuable historical record of British transport of a period that will never return and should be recognised as such by our national archives, museums and government. Sorry to hear about the loss of Alan.
