Who ever made the Tapestry It is a remarkable piece of work. It was always my hope to see it in person, and I was NOT disappointed. It was so much better in person. Two things struck me, 1. How long it was, and 2. The amount of detail. I was overwhelmed. I could have stayed for hours looking at all the details. It is a masterpiece. I have been wanting to see this since I was in my teens.
I read, many years ago (and sadly, I don't remember where), that the figures on the Bayeaux Tapestry were drawn by someone who was extremely short. The writer added that Matilda of Flanders was less than five feet tall and was the prime candidate as to the artist for the figures on the Tapestry.
I was watching Time Team the other day and they were discussing Queen Edith, they were in a town that was part of her dowry....wish I could remember which town that was, I would rewatch. Thanks for making these past months so great, Dr Kat. Have a great holiday!!

Hi Dr. Kat! Good video as always. As to the commissioner of the Bayeux Tapestry, it seems to me the person who commissioned it would be the man who needed what was "said" by the scenes embroidered on it ~~ William the Conqueror. Is it an honest depiction of what was said and done, who knows? But it seems to set out William's reading of the facts and why he is the Conqueror. Thanks again for the video. I knew it told a story, but I didn't understand the images or who the characters were. You've been an amazing teacher for me, in all of your videos, not just this one. I noticed some Shakespeare on your bookshelf - it would be great if you could go through some of the historical plays, and educate us on the backstories of what was going on at the time of the historical event, and also what was going on at the time Shakespeare wrote the play. I saw the tapestry in Normandy in March 2013. It is ENORMOUS. And the museum that houses the tapestry is terrific. Well worth the visit! I highly recommend it.
I cannot wait until it is safe to travel and sightsee again!

I was watching a film adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband the other day, and one character indignantly informs another, “To look at a thing is quite different from seeing a thing, and one does not see anything until one sees its beauty.” I feel as if I’ve been looking at the Tapestry for most of my life without ever seeing it! For example, I have never once considered who commissioned it. Ever. Like People magazine or Hello, I just thought it was always around to memorialize the winner’s version of a particular event - to burnish Wiiliam’s reputation as the Sexiest Man Alive, 1066 version. You’ve given me so much to think about (including knobs). Thank you for helping me make it through this arduous year. 3 months is when the fun truly starts. Usually, unless like my younger son they wait two, the baby sleeps through the night. He can really recognize you and begins to interact...it just so much fun as his personality begins to emerge. Enjoy!

I have always been fascinated by the Norman Conquest. You have given me a new eyes to look at it. It does appear that time does not truly change. Now we have politicians that take turns ruling and the people cannot trust them either. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and insight. How my mother would have loved your videos, and most especially this one. She loved the story of the conquest, and it seemed that anytime I asked her anything about English history, she would start out the explanation with "Well, it all began in 1066." She was descended from William the Conqueror, so of course, like so many around the world, I am too. In fact he seems to have produced so many descendants that I like to joke that ol' grandaddy Wills conquered more than just England!

I fell in love with Chaucer and Shakespeare, and researched the social context behind their stories and plays. I found your channel during COVID and wait with bated breath each Friday for a new episode. In between, I watch your past videos. Thank you for continuing to feed my interest in history, as well as that of my children, who say you make history fun for them. The Bayeux Tapestry will keep my family occupied ( as a homeschool mom I have already thought of some activities and research concerning the tapestry), until we meet with you again in the new year.

I recall seeing the Tapestry, but hanging, behind glass n the cathedral at Bayeux I thought, many years ago. My A level history master forty odd years ago credited Odo as the patron who commissioned the work.

May your Christmas be lovely and bright. Every year of parenthood brings the full measure of wonder and joy with just enough anxiety to illuminate the blessings you might otherwise over look. Though my motherhood adventures were limited to daughters, Gabriel was always on my short list should the child I was building have outside plumbing. It is a great ancient and noble name. Reading the Past is one of my COVID-19 discoveries and obsessions. I simply adore it and have generated a small coven of American followers who likewise wait patiently for every new episode. I wanted to comment on your episode regarding the match girls and the terrible injustice of having the Women’s Museum unceremoniously excluded from its first intended location. I always assumed America was the epicenter of bald faced misogyny. Many good wishes for a safe and healthy and hopeful 2021.
