James, the broken odometer is due to a combination of age and unintentional operator error. When resetting the odometer, the car should be stationary. If not the gears inside the odometer can skip. As the plastic ages, they simply break teeth off instead of skipping. Might even be in the manual.

Word to the wise, Jay- if you use the key to open the hatch the turning of the lock pulls on a pair of physical cables which release the hatch. The electric release is only from the interior switch.
My electric release has been broken for years, but I still have no trouble opening the hatch on mine.
Also, if you happen to come across a parts car and need to get in, you can also do so manually (either by shoving a screwdriver in the lock and turning, or by reaching a hand inside and turning the lock manually from inside the car). Have done this a few times now.

    • @JayEmmOnCars

Curious James as to your thoughts now that you have the 944 Turbo on how it compares to the Lotus Excel you were genuinely considering as a classic, given you have owned one of them before. I was looking at Excel SE's in mid-2020 after the first UK lockdown, went & saw two (wasn't able to test drive) and while I was impressed with condition and interior quality (lots of lovely leather, wood and soft trim headlining that all impart a luxury feel - virtually absent from any 944) I also felt the Excel packaging flexibility, rear visibility and driver ergonomics (I'm 187.5cm tall) were all inferior to the Porsche.
So I bought a well priced '87 Turbo with 250 Bhp engine upgrade. The 944 Coupe folding rear seat/hatch area, tilt/removable sunroof, properly functioning climate control air-con, galvanised body as well as build/quality robustness make the car everyday use appealing and in Turbo form, still has genuine power & torque that impress in 2021 through the seat of the pants. This is my 2nd (I had an '86 220 Bhp 952 before moving to the UK) and I still struggle to think of a more useable modern classic sportscar with rapid performance, reliability and serviceability (google "clarks-garage.com" for the ultimate online self servicing & repair website/forum).
But of course, I've had one before so I've hardly made an adventurous choice and there are only so many years to own all of your dream cars. So with that in mind, I'd be curious to know of the qualities I'm missing out on by not choosing Lotus most useable sportscar. How does the steering, handling, road-holding, driver feel and performance (less power but lighter package) compare?

As to the benefits of regular servicing, I once had an Opel Berlinetta Coupé 'serviced' at a main Vauxhall dealer, from whence it would continually refuse to restart when stopped at traffic lights and the like, after driving for a while, until it had completely cooled down; it took me quite a while to find out that the Vauxhall twonks had replaced an oil filter with an incorrect sized one.

Man I've always wanted one of those. They're getting a bit pricey now though, especially the Turbos. I'd love to get my hands on a non-Turbo and stuff as LS into it. I know it's cliche to put an LS into anything now but it really does suit the 944. It's a great platform with a dinky engine. It deserves a 300-350 hp V8. On a similar note, got my hands on a 1993 Miata in great shape, save the drivetrain has 197k on it. Still runs strong, well as strong as the 1.6 is, but I've got the AJ30 swap kit on the way. The NA is another great chassis in search of a great engine. The 3.0 Jag V6 is just about perfect for that car.
Also, I've always wondered how on a relatively small island y'all manage to have so much countryside.

I share the sentiment I'm seeing in the comments a lot - Whilst I don't think for a moment that Jay was at all in on it, I think the giveaway company probably selected him in an attempt to maximize exposure. I don't think the condition of the car indicates otherwise, it's in pretty good condition for a car of its age and if they were comfortable giving it away to the public they'd likely be happy giving it to a youtuber. Not a great reflection on the company either way. No reflection on Jay of course.

@@JayEmmOnCars In the absence of evidence I don't believe anything, I find it an interesting, possible and maybe probable scenario, as many others seem to, but since I don't really have a dog in the fight so to speak and since there is no real victim it seems pointless to report it to anyone or do anything other than pass comment on it. (Not to mention the ridiculous faff of having to jump through many hoops with action fraud before the police will even investigate a fraud case). If I'd bought tickets I might be otherwise inclined and motivated to ask some questions about the transparency of the selection process.
It is of course completely possible that it was pure chance, I'm not a statistician and I wouldn't like to speculate. All I'm saying is that for the company involved it's highly convenient, too good to be true you might say - and things that look too good to be true, usually are.
Of course this is all speculation and I've probably grown too cynical in my old age. Maybe it's all above board and the company just had an immense stroke of luck. Either way, you've ended up with a great fun car so don't let my - or anyone's speculative comments prevent you from enjoying it, it's just the bottom bit of TH-cam after all :)

The NA 944 S2 was seen as the better version to have back in the day, but no doubt the turbo with big badge has some presence. Even in those days the turbo was popular to tune to about 300-320 hp, making it very fast for its time. S2 is nice, but for the "morons" like me would rather have the turbo for those reasons. Cheers.

As for those questioning the raffle... a few years back a friend of mine organised a raffle for charity and him being a mate I bought three ticket(real wild spender I am 😆). Anyway, there were a couple of thousand tickets sold and on the day the prizes started to be drawn. Early one of my numbers came up and I collected my small prize, to good natured hoots from the assembled people of "fix!*. 😆 Other prizes were duly won and handed out. Then came the grand prize. The lass fumbling about in the tombola picked out a number. Mine. 😲 Now since I felt a bit guilty, I suggested no, we should put that ticket aside and roll again. She picked out another number from the pile. Mine _again_ 😲😲 Yeah. Over the speakers you could hear my friend say "oh for f*** sake" 😂 So it can happen. And yes I let it roll again.

As the owner of a pair of 16v I would say once you get past the punch list of things you must do they are pretty good. But the punch list is extensive. Clutch, master and slave, motor mounts, belts, tensioner, front struts, upper cam cover seal, balance shaft housing cover seal. To this you might also add in power steering elements- the three hoses, reservoir, pump and rack. The windshield washer system. Exhaust system. And air con. The parts alone for the above are over $4k and they will be necessary, unless done in the last year. Most have not had that.
So what do you buy then? Good paint and interior and seals and gaskets. Those are really painful to buy or restore. If the seats and dash and door cards and carpets are good it’s good car to start with. But expect to add $5-8k to the purchase price to a 944, less if you can do the work yourself.

Seeing juggernauts approaching in the passenger window really checks your brown alert button!
