    It took me a little research, but here is the answer for the random train. It is an EMD-GP50 for the Indiana & Ohio Railroad. It is crossing OH-73 in New Vienna, OH. I found the town by looking up Engine House Pizza which has 4.3 stars from 119 reviews. I found the model number of the train by looking just left of the engine number under the engineer's side window. BNSF runs EMDs here in Phoenix/Glendale AZ, so I knew which brand it was. How did I do?

      I identified the location by essentially the same method but I didn't bother posting because of the two lingering shots of the "New Vienna" sign at the end of the video, which kinda give the game away!

    Love the sound of the whistle, and the engineer’s skill at making it sing! Back when the Whitewater Valley Railroad had Baldwin Prairie #100, some engineers owned their own steam whistle, which they would mount on the engine during their run. The crews always knew who was running the steam engine by the sound(s) of the whistle.

      Invented by a Michigan logger to operate on rough track. It won't go fast but it will move heavy loads on grades. The train you see would not even make it up the grades there with the BL-2 Diesel. In fact, it was limited to 1 car because the Diesels do not have the traction that one of the Shays have. But even two of them can slip on the grades in the fall when the leaves are on the track and coated with dew.

      If it isn't smoking, it isn't working. I can fire an oil burner to where there is very little smoke and keep the pressure up but a coal burner is a whole 'nother beast. I wish Cass had kept the one oil burner they had as an oil burner so that people could see the difference. PC #2 was that oil burner.

    What a treat to see an old steam engine! That whistle is hauntingly melodic. I think during the turn of the century, maybe late 1800s, people used to ride on top of the cars and they would get off covered in soot. Really cool to see the water tower in action and seeing the engineer's assistant putting coal into the furnace. LOVED IT!! Thank you!!

    • @stevenkarnisky411

      Vicki Paying passengers have never been allowed atop railroad cars in this country, save for the first few years of railroading when the cars were converted stagecoach bodies. Think 1825.
      Conductors and brake men did ride the tops, but only because the brakes were applied by turning a brake wheel on the top of each car, which pulled a chain connecting to the brake shoes. It was dirty, dangerous work, and many brake men were killed falling off the narrow running boards on the top of cars. Others were swept off by bridges or tunnels with low clearances, if they failed to duck in time.
      They did get sooty, cold in winter, hot in summer. This practice lasted until the government finally forced the railroads to install the newly invented air brakes on all their equipment. After around 1900, give or take, brake men mostly stayed off the tops when the trains were moving.
      As tar as soot, everyone on early trains got dirty, including passengers. If not from the locomotive smoke, from the wood stoves that were used tonheat each passenger car.
      In some third world countries, notably India, passengers do ride on top of cars due to the extreme crowding inside. They also die at alarming rates!

    • @VickiCampbell-1216
      @VickiCampbell-1216 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenkarnisky411 Thank you for the great information! It was many years ago that I saw, (if my memory serves), a documentary on early railroads and trains. I saw the people leaving the top of the cars, covered in soot. It's very possible it was in another country that this was filmed from. Yes, I am aware of the overloaded trains in India with passengers dangerously on top. My daughter-in-law came over from Mumbai, India.
      Wasn't it Westinghouse that introduced the new, critical braking system for locomotives? I very much appreciate the history you've shared. I love trains, but I'm a bit of a novice. I sure do appreciate the old steam engines. They're a lot of fun to see. Indeed, very dangerous for engineers and operators on these old trains back in the 1800s. Yikes!! We've come a long way. 😊

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VickiCampbell-1216 Yes it was George Westinghouse that patented it but it was for the whole train. Not just the loco. Before that the locos had steam jamb brakes. That also was common on earlier Shays and ones that were only used on logging railroads. Steam jamb brakes operate as the name implies. Steam is applied to a cylinder which by linkages force the brake shoes against the wheels. It was also common for Shays to have both types.

    FYI: THE NUMBER OF COVER CARS REQUIRED ON HAZ MAT CARS. A RR Educational Moment.
    As a retired road engineer I was asked to settle a discussion on the Wide World Of Trains channel concerning the number of cover cars needed on Hazardous Material. I thought i would post it here on JT’s channel and one more that I watch also. It may not be much of an issue on the short line RRs.
    I was asked to clarify an issue about cover cars for Hazardous Materials. As with most Federal Regulations they are minimum requirements. IE, if the regulation calls for 5 cars of cover an individual RR can require more, but not less. Also this regulation has a lot of IFs, and changes with circumstances. I will give a couple examples but I will also include the regulation title so each of y’all can research this issue to your own desires.
    According to 49 CFR § 174.85 a loaded tank car with Hazardous Material must have, IF TRAIN LENGTH PERMITS, 5 cars of cover between any occupied engine or caboose. So the nearest the loaded Haz Mat tank car can be to an engine is the sixth car. NOTE: The units of an engine behind the lead / control unit can not be counted or used as cover.
    If the tank car that was carrying Hazardous Material is empty it must have at least one car of cover, IF TRAIN LENGTH PERMITS, between the occupied engine or occupied caboose.
    Also certain Haz Mat cars can not be next to other certain types of Haz Mat cars, regardless of where they are in the train.
    As you can see from this short explanation this can be a very complicated issue. With the use of computers it made the task much easier. We use to have a whole day of class, with a test, each year just on Haz Mat placement in the train and cover requirements. Then on top of that one or two days of rules classes and testing each year also.

    0:55 - That roadway at left is where coal delivery trucks back up to dump into the coal dock. Until the early 1980s, Cass got their coal in via hopper cars and there was a steep track up the ramp for dumping. I think the grade was about 20 percent, but it was short and only a car or two at a time were handled.

      @@JawTooth Toward the end the coal came via the Western Maryland at Durbin, but I think this stopped long before the WM line was removed circa 1983. The demise of the 50Ton hopper probably played a role the decision to go to trucks. They also got tank cars of oil for the "Mt. Emily" Shay #3! They spotted the oil car on the coal dock for gravity feed to Three's tender. No. 3 went back to the Pacific Northwest around 1990, via flatcars.

      @@jasonking2943 I know, boy do I know. FEMA always had answers for questions not even asked. They would send out paperwork one day only to tell you after sending it in that it changed in the afternoon and so you need to resubmit it on the new form. The NRC was the same way as dad worked for the local power company on the nuke units. The company would get in a new piece of equipment that the NRC required only to be told the specs had changed and you need to use a different unit. And no, you cannot use the item you just got in.

    That is one of the loudest steam whistles that I have heard. Maybe it's the frequency compared to others, but holy shit! Loud! That thing could wake the dead.
    Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that style of steam locomotive not more commonly used in logging or mining operations? Just an observation. I'm not familiar with that area so that could part of the area history.

    That was a very interesting drive mechanism for the wheels-- instead of in-line pistons on each side, there were multiple pistons perpendicular to the drive shaft, which then presumably drove the wheels through a rack and pinion gear (the pinion being on the drive shaft, and the rack a part of the wheels). This allows for a high gear ratio between the engine and the wheels, similar to the drive mechanism used on automobiles: the engine runs at a much higher rpm than the wheels. This type of drive provides much higher torque than the usual in-line pistons. Also note the Pacific Coast logo on the locomotive. I am guessing this engine was used in an area which had a very steep grade, something which is usually found along the Pacific Coast.

      Route 60 close to Charleston the road is a 8 percent grade. Theres signs. My gps avoids tolls on i 77. I dont know how close that is to this but 8% grade on back rds

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bevel gears are what is used. In the case of PC #2, I think it is a 2.43 to 1 ratio on the gearing or 14.5 power strokes per turn of the axle. Pacific Coast was the name that Lima chose for their improved Shay to compete with a company called Willamette Iron and Steel Works of Portland, Oregon who built a loco that was very similar to a Shay but improved on the older designs. An easy way to tell the difference in the two is to look at the cylinders. A Shay will have the valves for them in line while a Willamette will have the valves all facing out.
