    Excellent video! I have 7 Russian SKS, they are the best value in semi auto firearms today. Plus they have great history to them, and are pretty unique rifles.
    FYI, the larger pouch on the Chinese bandoleer is for the oil bottle - that's why it is lined with that plasticy rubber.. All cleaning tools are stored on the rifle itself.

    In Canada, our Commie government won’t allow us AK’s, FAL’s AR’s or even M14’s. The closest thing a budget-wise guy can get that resembles a battle rifle is the humble SKS. I remember well the days of the $129 SKS but they are long gone now. I picked up one of the bandoliers a few years ago. The quality and fit of the stripper clips are all over the place. The best ones I found were Czech marked with BXN on the back. They feed well and are easily reloaded with any 7.62x39 ammo. The worst ones I found were Chinese, marked with the number 31 with a circle around it. They seem a little wider and bind in the stripper clip guide in my Tula SKS, and they have a tendency to drop rounds when you grab them.
    The surplus 7.62x39 ammo is still plentiful and cheap here for now. Last time I looked, Russian SKS’s were going for $500 CDN with the Chinese ones a close second at around $400. To my fellow Canadians, you better grab them while you still can.

    Funny you mention a “safe place” to do this inside so if an “accident” does happen there is little to no consequence - accidents DO happen, and funny enough, my first accident was with a 7.62x39 caliber weapon 😅 can never be too careful handling firearms!! I’m lucky to have learned my lesson without consequence

    I remember when they were sold for $69.99 and 100 rounds of amo. I purchased a 1967 model 56 Chinese one two years ago for $400. I did purchase the bandoleer and $200 in ammo.

    There are actually two different types of SKS Rifles that are being manufactured 1 is the Type 56 (which is the fixed magazine), the other model type is unknown and is a variable magazine that can handle from 5 rounds to 100 rounds in a drum.

    I own a Yugoslavian M59/ 66A1 SKS. I like it despite owning also an M1 Garand. In the search for gear to carry ammo for mine I found Strike Hard Gear and they make stock pouches, bandoleers, and MOLLE pouches for the Stripper Clips and a chest rig for the Tapco magazines.

    I don't know if it was mentioned, and it's basically a technicality, but the Type 56 is the Chinese version which usually has a spike bayonet. You have a beautiful Russian SKS there. Great vid. Thanks for posting it.

    cheers for the reply,I know all too well about making your hobby your job,losing your hobby,oh and getting sick of it!! Must have been fun at the time! Keep up the excellent reviews,shame that in the UK we cant participate in collecting anymore,the government get jumpy now about people even buying scissors (you have to be over 18) let alone a "gun" shaped object,they class anything "gun" shaped as a firearm now,plastic,paper,wood or otherwise, utter madness,

    I do not have the cleaning kit for the bandoleer but until I do, the pocket for the kit holds 4 stripper clips very nicely. There is the kit in the butt stock although it is very basic.

    I live in Massachusetts. Need to take a class and then apply and wait for the FID license, which only lets me own 10rd rifles and 5rd shotguns. When I turn 21 i can get a license that lets me own 10rd handguns and full capacity rifles and shotguns. Also, I am in college so money is VERY tight and I want a full power rifle that wont cost me an arm and a leg, so for now pretty much any AK is out of the question. Thanks for the advice though.

    You should really download and read a manual on any firearm that doesn't come with one. Especially a military automatic rifle.
    Just google it!
    Enjoy your new rifle - and clean it to avoid slam firing!

    I would love to get a AR or AK. Problem is here in California you can't have detachable magazines with a pistol grip on any weapon. You can have one or the other but not both. They actually sell the AK and AR with magazines welded on. In fact I can't even put a pistol grip stock on my Ruger 10/22. Then there's the 10 round mag capacity limit. California Sucks!!!

    Excellently made for how old the video is. Still a great option for the money spent, you can find sporterized SKSs for 300-400 bucks. For practical purposes, that would work.

    We're fairly lucky with the SKS where I live (New Zealand), we can pick up brand new Norincos all day for between $150-200 US. For some reason we have thousands of the things, both the 16" and 20". I've never seen a Yugo here tho. We do however get shafted with ammo prices. 500 rounds of 7.62x39 is more like $250 US. Great rifle though, many people here have it as a first deer/hog rifle.

    I own different ARs , a Super Match Heavy barrel M-1A, and other expensive high performance modern rifles. I keep a type 56 SKS as my go to handy, right there rifle. Good for fun, hunting, or any defensive application. It hits to point of aim , cheap to shoot, doesn't malfunction , will last forever and doesn't cost a lot? These rifles were always undervalued.

    Excellent video, Sootch! I bought an SKS chest harness at a surplus store (the one that I brought with me to the Prepper conference), and beside putting a quick release buckle on the back, I sprayed the whole thing down with silicone waterproofing spray so it would stay in good shape. As soon as I can track down a little pack nylon, I had an idea to sew some pouches on the inside of the harness to hold TAPCO 20rd mags.
    As for combat, the Viet Minh used the SKS to defeat the French in 1954.

    I had an ar15 until i had bolt carrier issues and sold it. Now i resort back to my Russian SKS. It is better built than any AR15 and hits harder than the .223 round. Although i am limited to my ten round box mag. It is way more reliable than any 30 round clip.

    • @stevemazz3121
      @stevemazz3121 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too funny... better built than any AR15.... More reliable then any 30 round clip.... That may be true if you are buying low end budget, stamped, inexpensive (cheap) weapons... Hard to find any SKS to match a Daniel Defense v7 premium with a heavy duty barrel.... around $2400 dollars...

    Definitely a great loadout for a minuteman on a budget, and once said minuteman's budget increases to the point where they can afford a higher capacity fighting rifle, this can be a great trunk gun option. You might not be at home when shtf, so a cheap semiauto in the trunk with a couple hundred rounds ready to go is great peace of mind.

    That's just the rig I'm looking for! I got my SKS not long ago. Their price is going up here in Canada, but I still got a decent one for 270 bucks. I could have shopped around more. I like basic kit. If they weren't restricted here, I'd get an AR 15 and keep it stock with the raised handle/ sight rail and all. They can be had fairly cheaply here, but you can't take them into the bush and where's the fun in that?

    @SerpentineBoa1986 for what its worth 308 runs about $15-40 for 20rds and 7.62x39 runs about $4-15 for a box of ammo, so unless you can get 308 cheeper then 7.62x39 its not worth it for a SHTF gun. i personly have both a SKS and a 91/30 for my SHTF gun's. the thing is cost. not every one can drop $2,000 on a gun and ammo

    A bit of graphite lubricant should do it. Don't over do it though. You don't want the rounds to have too much. Plus you have to ensure that no lubricant will reach the face of the bolt. It's never a good idea to have lubricant there.

    Wow I didn't know Mass was like that. I thought that NY was bad. Here you can buy any rifle you want at 18 with no special license but they can never be full capacity ever, no matter your age. LEO only. It's hard to get a pistol here though and for that and pistol grip shotguns you have to be 21. The Saiga I have I got for 400 bucks so it is a little more but not too much. Good luck man!

  • @TheOpenSight
    @TheOpenSight 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Considering a AK at all Schnips? Saiga makes a "sporting" ak variant, made in Russia and it is cheap, and AWESOME! Accurate, and very reliable. Plus you can get it brand new for cheap, where the SKS will likely be used. Only downside is you have to use Saiga specific mags, not just any AK mags work, but that's really not that big a deal as Tapco makes them. Where do you live that you need a license for a rifle?

    Do you just twist the pegs to open the pouches or do you just mess with it till it opens(yes im actually asking,not insulting)? Also where should I look for a SKS gun store,pawn shop,gun show and so on.
    Take care.

    Sks can fire even with the safety on . The firing pin can jam in the forward position if dirty or damaged , causing a slamfire when letting the bolt fly forward whilst loading . KEEP RIFLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION

    How come your no longer a gun dealer? I would have thought in America you would empty your stock cupboards every other day,I doubt very much that the bottom fell out of the business somehow.Would be interesting to know.

    You can get a brand new Saiga rifle in 7.62x39 for $349.00. Made by the famous Izhmash factory in Russia. Great rifle. But the SKS is definitely cool.

    My SKS does not like stripper clips. It can be a real pain with what it likes or not, lol. It will also not take plastic mags. I guess that is the Chinese ones for you, lol.
