I will always be grateful to the Police, Police motorcyclists and Ambulance that got my daughter from Fife to Glasgow Sick Kids during rush hour. A journey of around 50 miles.

No, you have to follow a police officer his directions and orders in traffic. The bleu flash light and siren are only to inform you that a vehicle is approaching with first right of way. You have to know that for your theoretic examination for your drivers license. His orders and directions go above all other traffic rules. The police officer can even be in civilian clothes on a civilian looking motor bike. He will let you now he is police by a display or verbally, you have to follow his orders in that case also.

The lights were still on, only the siren was out. That can course confusing situations. Only by using lights and siren the officer is allowed to create free lanes and drivers have follow his instructions.

Work vans like the one that moved too slowly at 2:33 are ones to watch out for anyway. A lot of people driving vans like that are in a hurry going from place to place, often new to the area, maybe on their phone or messing with navigation, but pushy because they have a job to do. Always be on guard and expect them to pull stunts not to miss their exit, etc
Not sure for netherlands, but in France, there are pre selection and selection that tests firstly your aptitude on off-road with enduro, then your aptitude on ground with handling with roadster (many gets eliminated here), then they do some circuits to start handling the bikes while doing signs fluently. And then they practice on real traffic. Apparently only 80% of people can pass those selections (everyone had already its permit to drive bikes) Once they are within the team, there are formations to maintain their levels or build skills like shooting from the bike.

I've seen a lot videos of this team, but this is a first one at which they try to force cars out of their way without lights and sirens. Only with lights and sirens they are priority vehicles, otherwise you don't have to make way for them.
Police should keep sirens on if they want to pass. Last week I had a police van without sirens driving behind me on my motorcycle around 1m behind me. I couldnt move over the lane because it was a double solid white line which is forbidden to cross. I crossed this exact same line in the same place to let a police car with sirens pass a year earlier and he was actually trying to pull me over and I hadnt realised yet. When he stopped me he threatened me with a ticket for crossing the double white line. I said "I was letting you pass" and he said "but it is still forbidden" 😂 sometimes you cannot possibly do the right thing according to Police.
dont worry you wont get a ticket for that if a police is behind you with sirens. Also you can tell by the lights if they will pull you over or not. If not shown by the lights you are not being pulled over and all you gotta do is make way.

Yeah I agree. There's a startle factor, as well as a making sure you don't cause an accident by doing something unexpected factor. These are not situations that most people encounter every day.

The whole idea of these roadclearing trips is to clear traffic in advance of the ambulance so the ambulance can keep a constant speed. More comfortable for the patient. Hence you’ll see the motorcycle speed up to close the gap with traffic in front, so that he (or she) can get the lane cleared in time. The cops don’t drive at a steady 200kph, usually their speed is much lower (since the ambulance driver should not exceed certain speed limits, again for the comfort of their patient). Finally, traffic on Dutch snelwegen tend to drive at around the speed limit so 100-105kmph during the day and 130-140 after 7PM (when speed limits are adjusted). The speed difference between traffic and cops is therefore barely ever as big as you make it out to be.

These are motorcyclists from Team Verkeer Den Haag and have been specially trained for this. It is not only about being able to ride a motorcycle very well, but also being able to shift gears very quickly and read traffic. Many very good motorcyclists fail the training to be allowed to perform such escorts. Team Traffic not only escorts ambulances, but also dignitaries, government leaders and all other transport that requires police guidance. If there is no escort, they are just officers who work the regular shift.

In the Netherlands they do still have additional rights, only difference without lights and siren is that other drivers aren’t warned up front, so that’s a mistake from the police officer.

I guess the gap was too big between him and the ambulance, so he had to slow down. But he should have done just that, slowed down (in combination with turning off his emergency signals), so the mistake wasn't necessarily turning them off I think, but keeping such a high speed and sitting in the cars blind spot. You could see the panic in the drivers movement when the signals were turned back on, he reacted quickly though.
It's probably protocol as the combination of flashing lights and siren aims at instructing drivers to clear the left most lane which is not where he needed to go. Note that he only turned the siren back on after passing the gore (puntstuk). There is actually a second similar weaving section just a couple of hundred meters from that point, just after the flyover, where they needed to get to the right as well but the video skips both this point and where the A4 joins from the left to pick up again on the A13.
they should habe some prepared recording they can put over the speaker for the highway. stay out of left lane for ambulance or in the city: don't move into intersection until ambulance arrives...
I work in the traffic control centre (Rijkswaterstaat) here in the Netherlands, and in some cases we are in contact with the ambulance driver via radio or telephone and we will put red crosses above the left lane so no other drivers can use that lane and thus make it free of traffic.
Back when there was only FM and Phillips Cassette tape, there where some experiments with RDS, But nowadays with DSB+, bluetooth and Apple/Android Auto, there is no guarantee that people are listening to a local station for the Ambulance to jam. Flitsmeister navigation responds to signals from emergency vehicles. But that is a paid app and radar warning devices are illegal in some European nations.
To be fair most Dutch can speak English as well as we can and even those that can't can speak it better than most of us can speak any foreign language.
We have the SAME problem in the UK . Some drivers are SO UNAWARE of what is around them , even with noise . problem is you never know if they are in drink or drugs as well as just not looking .

As a dutch person, I like the video, but please get your facts straight, coming from A12 Zoetermeer going onto the exit, you go to Highway A13 & Highway A4, not A20, thats a few kilometers further down the road
The Netherlands is 200 by 130 miles, and while there are medical helicopters, these are generally used to deploy doctors specialized in trauma, triage and first aid, not so much for airlifts, except maybe on the Dutch Wadden isles in the north, or the Zeeuwse eilanden in the southwest.

That's the problem here in the Netherlands the drivers of vans and cars think they need to ride on the middle lane when there are 3 lanes or more on the highway. Those are just dumb drivers that should go back to drivers school to take some lessons again.
First class training for the police riders and drivers , on top of that they are smart yet decent people..I spent 48 years as an international trucker and was regularly in Holland going back to the 1970s , I was never stopped once by the Dutch police basically because I followed the rules kept a clean safe truck and was also a professional driver…

Even with only blue lights, they are not obligated to move over. Only blue and no sirens means that they are NOT a priority vehicle, but it's best to treat them that way, though.
Been there done that and would never turn off the equipment. Most of those drivers probably looking at their mobiles. I see dozens every day but in the uk we very rarely see a police officer in the streets to give them a ticket.

The video states the speed limit during the day is 100kph on all Dutch freeways. This is not correct. The speedlimit on all dutch freeways is 130kph unless otherwise specified. Granted, in most places during the day the speedlimit will be 100kph but that is not necessarily always the case.

How do they use their right hand to wave cars to the right? The right hand is the throttle! As soon as you tell them to move over you have the hand off the throttle, and are going to slow down, and they go past? Left hand traffic can do it, as the left hand is the clutch, not needed to maintain speed, just to change down. You can change up a gear without the clutch.
I believe the throttle is modified so it does not immediately return to the idle position. Also if you are at speed you can pull the clutch so you can ride without propulsion on the engine
They are more often not planned then other way around. Think about a traffic accident where there are heavy injuries. I've worked for the Rotterdam Police and almost every month there where emergency transports where the Police squad cars assists to free up crossings. The fact that you don't see them in this video tells me that this was not a planned ride.

This is so well organized and the Streets are well marked, not like here in the USA where there are streets lanes are invisible at times.

Many very good motorcyclists fail the training to be allowed to perform such escorts.
Team Traffic not only escorts ambulances, but also dignitaries, government leaders and all other transport that requires police guidance. If there is no escort, they are just officers who work the regular shift.

When I am driving on the Dutch motorways and I see a motorcycle cop on my ass , I move ,lights or no lights..... no excuse to just hang around
In the Netherlands they do still have additional rights, only difference without lights and siren is that other drivers aren’t warned up front, so that’s a mistake from the police officer.

I guess the gap was too big between him and the ambulance, so he had to slow down. But he should have done just that, slowed down (in combination with turning off his emergency signals), so the mistake wasn't necessarily turning them off I think, but keeping such a high speed and sitting in the cars blind spot. You could see the panic in the drivers movement when the signals were turned back on, he reacted quickly though.
It's probably protocol as the combination of flashing lights and siren aims at instructing drivers to clear the left most lane which is not where he needed to go. Note that he only turned the siren back on after passing the gore (puntstuk). There is actually a second similar weaving section just a couple of hundred meters from that point, just after the flyover, where they needed to get to the right as well but the video skips both this point and where the A4 joins from the left to pick up again on the A13.
they should habe some prepared recording they can put over the speaker for the highway. stay out of left lane for ambulance or in the city: don't move into intersection until ambulance arrives...
In the future there will be notifications on all the car screens, some traffic apps already have it.

The coordination between police and those who manages roads is too slow as of now, but in the future I'm pretty sure they'll input this feature.
I work in the traffic control centre (Rijkswaterstaat) here in the Netherlands, and in some cases we are in contact with the ambulance driver via radio or telephone and we will put red crosses above the left lane so no other drivers can use that lane and thus make it free of traffic.

I don‘t live in the Netherlands, but in Germany and we are taught that you should check your mirrors rather constantly when on the motorway. I am quite sure the Dutch learn the same.

The Netherlands is 200 by 130 miles, and while there are medical helicopters, these are generally used to deploy doctors specialized in trauma, triage and first aid, not so much for airlifts, except maybe on the Dutch Wadden isles in the north, or the Zeeuwse eilanden in the southwest.

@Emergency P.O.V interesting concept of driving a bike at speed and expecting cars to use that thing called a rear veiw mirror or indeed any mirror to see the bike,, regardless of being fully marked up and moving over without sirens or lights on,, because with lights and sirens on he was still struggling to clear traffic out of the way...also remember a bike is a lot less big then a car,, eg alot less of a physical presence then a car to spot and dominate the road space..and i know a bit about that aspect because i ride a bike.

1:40 Incorrect! Because the siren and lights are out, the white vehicle has no reason to believe the cop is on the road for an emergency. If a cop is behind you and their lights and sirens are not enables there is 0 obligation to move over. The driver of the car moved over immediately as soon as the lights and sirens came on. The only person to fault for this situation is the cop, he should have kept his lights on.

Even with only blue lights, they are not obligated to move over. Only blue and no sirens means that they are NOT a priority vehicle, but it's best to treat them that way, though.

The video states the speed limit during the day is 100kph on all Dutch freeways. This is not correct. The speedlimit on all dutch freeways is 130kph unless otherwise specified. Granted, in most places during the day the speedlimit will be 100kph but that is not necessarily always the case.

Overall, the teamwork was good but there could have been better effective use of their numbers. Example, at the first intersection, a second officer could have blocked off the right lane to keep it free instead additional vehicles kept filtering in.

Left hand traffic can do it, as the left hand is the clutch, not needed to maintain speed, just to change down. You can change up a gear without the clutch.

I've worked for the Rotterdam Police and almost every month there where emergency transports where the Police squad cars assists to free up crossings. The statement you start of with is pure nonsense. All drivers are obliged to make way for an ambulance with sirens and warning lights, they don't need police with sirens and warning lights for that. It does help though, obviously.
