When I first heard the audio of him telling in his book about taunting and mocking the lady from his school who had a physical disability, I kept waiting for him to admit that he had been a jerk and immature and out of line, but, no, he told the story as though he expected the audience to laugh with him at the silly disabled lady who probably didn't have the luxury of walking away from the job, despite the cruelty of sniveling upstarts like Harry. I hope his family has tracked her down and compensated her in some way. This is all so strange to me because it's like a replay. When a youngster I would stay most of the long school summer hols with my gran, which was lovely. She had books about the monarchy at that time, and would often tell me about how Wallis Simpson had been despised and blamed for King Edward abdicating. British people were more royalist and patriotic then. But the similarity of MM and Wallis is there, and Meghan even seems to copy her style. Harry seems to go with what his wife says. My gran thought Edward V111 was a weak man, as many did back then apparently. So it has crossed my mind often during all this H&M fiasco how similar the stories are. We have to be grateful that William was the first-born. (Love Alexander Larman's rich voice).

I think the author is too kind to Wallis. Yeah, as a society hanger on, she was originally apolitical. It didn't include cocktails and fabulous jewelery. Latching on to Edward was a brilliant jump up the social ladder.
First, Edward's father's (the King) death, then the War, were ENORMOUS inconveniences to her, and her social plans. The first forced the issue of their, oh so convenient for her, relationship...to go public. Never part of her plan.
She had planned on Edward's usual behavior, her retirement, when he moved on, AS HE ALWAYS DID, with massive social perks, as his former paramore.
The King's death forced the issue. And Edward saw an out, that the public could rally behind, true love...
He had CONDITIONS for Kingship, that, thank god, weren't met. But it did turn out, Edward was better at playing the public. For her to deny his claims, were now UNTHINKABLE. It would have ruined her.
Yes, they used words like "ruined" then...AND MEANT THEM.
The War, and not just Edward's love of Hitler, but the very threat a living ex King, meant, in embarrassment alone, would see them exiled to the Carribean, far away from everything, the life, the society, she craved, and had paid dearly for.
By ALL accounts, of their new downgraded circle of friends, she made Edward pay dearly for this.
Known for her rapier wit, she shredded him on a regular basis, publically and privately. What we now call, passive aggressive. That Edward, briefly THE KING OF ENGLAND, took meekly. Sadly for him, no one ever said he was a wit.
Wallis seems to have some dominatrix qualities as well. We all remember the slap, at table, correcting the PRINCE'S manners, EARLY ON. Shocking his girlfriend, who had left him in her care. Who knows what ELSE this included?? A strong woman, a very weak man, rarely bodes well for the guy.
When Edward died, Wallis was not even in the room, to comfort him. This would have required NO EFFORT on her part. So much for this "Great love"...

@@kimclarke5018 I said Wallis wasn't political, in 1931, when she was playing socialite, as the wife of Ernest Simpson, looking for upward mobility, and meeting Edward's Set. Mostly at Country Estates, most suitable for the "sort" of Elite weekend parties that would attract the Prince. Edward could have privacy, among his friends. A married woman was his particular taste in girl friends. No demands could be made. Discretion had been a long tradition...A husband playing beard.
My text was long, but still couldn't include everything. Like the fact that Edward had NO illusions that a twice divorcee would EVER be acceptable, when he offered his ultimatums to stay King.
At the time, and later, Wallis claimed she had no desire to be Queen, but it's likely, after his father's death, he strung her along with this possibility...knowing full well it wasn't doable. If she'd been English she would have known better.
But it would certainly MORE than reclaim her lost status, after her divorce from Ernest, in 1936, and the world she was now a pariah in. Edward took her on a cruise that they were photographed on, forcing Ernest to divorce her. Deliberate?? Who knows...
But it did leave Wallis without options.
His father's death, as well as Edward's abdication, was 1936. In 1937, they both met Hitler, and I'm pretty sure THAT deal, at least partially, was meant to placate Wallis. Hitler spelled power. And she admired that.
In 1940, they were, basically, exiled to the Bahamas, which they both felt was a culturally bereft backwater. And obviously, Germany DIDN'T win WW2. While they would travel, after 1950, neither would ever be part of English Society again.
They were subsidized by the Royal family, as Wallis was, even after Edward's death. I would suspect, as an encouragement to keep their distance.

Yes, I read something many years ago that Sir Winston Churchill was very much aware of Wallis Simpson’s connection with Von Ribbentrop, a diplomat who was working out of the German Embassy in London....he had the title of “Ambassador to the Court of St. James”.....Once David became King Edward VIII & was still carrying on with Wallis Simpson, Churchill cooked up a plan with the help of J Edgar Hoover of the American FBI, who happened to have a file on Mrs Simpson....
Most weekends David ( King Edward 8 , who was never crowned) spent his weekends at Windsor Castle with Wallis Simpson... “The Red Box” containing diplomatic papers , “for the king’s eyes only “was delivered there every weekend.
Churchill was aware that information was being passed to Von Ribbentrop at the German Embassy....So with the help of J. Edgar Hoover, Mr Churchill had misleading documents put into the “red box” to be delivered to Windsor Castle...the King & his mistress were totally unaware of what was going on...by Monday morning Churchill was able to confirm through the British spy he had planted in the the German Embassy....that the false information has reached the German Embassy...I believe that these shenanigans went on until the king abdicated.
This is one of the reasons that after his abdication David (King Edward VIII) The by then Duke of Windsor & his new wife first of all lived in Paris until the fall of France. Then on to neutral Portugal before arriving in the Bahamas. He was the Governor of the Bahamas for the duration of the war in 1945....
Churchill knew that the Duke & Duchess of Windsor were both pro Nazi .....as there was no internet in those days , Churchill knew the pair would be unable to pass along anymore government secrets.....HazNoBalls & his Mrs do remind me of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor...IMO🇨🇦🇬🇧

    • @katel7309
      @katel7309 ปีที่แล้ว

Margret had being female born in a generation where things were different for women. Career's/ business pursuit was developing. Being an upper class aristocratic added further complexity . Shame her marriage did not work out and had a good life with her husband and kids.
But Harry he had the world at his feet to go do great things and pursue interests etc. He with a modern world had easy opportunity to find his purpose. To define one's identity as 'spare' says everything.
People around him should have encouraged to find a life outside of the only thing to be an heir to the throne.
Other people did, all his other cousins have. People around the world have gone on in tragic situations of loosing family members and lived well.
Thing is people never saw him as spare or the missing out one or non privileged one for not being direct in line to succession, people liked him for who he was and was probably down to earth with people.
Maybe suggested where Charles and Diana missed it a bit, was not giving him strong self efficacy/ image and purpose that was for his life just as important as the role to be King??
Sending a positive message to him that he would have had choices as an adult where William's life was very predetermined. Neither is worse or better it just is. Each person has gifts, talents, abilities 'bents' towards certain life interest and learning skills. Each person has to discover there own uniqueness.
After all you can only have one King. Millions of people won't be King!

Much the same could be said of Princess Margaret and her romance with Gp Capt Peter Townsend. Don't know about the QM? She blamed them ( from what I've heard) for George having to take the throne, putting into a stressful situation and his early death. Don't know if this is true or made up by people taking about Edward and Wallis story.
This then impacted Elizabeth going off on tours (became Queen earlier than probably planned) leaving Charles and Anne. I think this impacted Charles?? For Elizabeth she was a young women in her 20's doing her duty.
Funny I don't think Harry realises that Charles had a tough up bringing mum and dad where off on tours half his young life. He had a different personality to Philip who was very tough. So I heard the schools Charles went to can't remember which one but Charles had it rough time and did not have that strong go getting personality like his Dad. Have to see if I can find the you tube video where a lot of this is shared.
But I remember hearing that QE2 invited Wallis to something but can't remember what so she extended an olive branch at the end. Maybe it was around his death and funeral?? You said buried in royal grounds so maybe he was sent back for burial.
I would have to re listen to stuff on all of this.
