3:52 its the same with my 2007 2.4D.
The transmission simply will not cooperate as well when its cold vs. warmed up. The engine performs wonderfully but the transmission doesnt want to.
Im hoping that a fluid flush will improve it.
My plan is to flush with 10L of cheap Mannol Fluid, run that for some time and then drain it again and flush the Mannol fluid out with Ravenol ATF T-IV which has been recommended to me as the best fluid for the TF80SC Transmission. That will then be the final fill for 2-3 years.

I’m definitely trying this one out. Already in from work as rained off but will get back with the results tomorrow. I drive like a granny to save mpg and average 45 mpg going to work in my XC70. Always battling the gear change at around 33 miles per hour so this should definitely work. Roll on tomorrow.

Ok, that is a revelation to me! Great man, I will try this tomorrow. Own a V70 D5 2011 model with new gearbox oil, I will test way of driving, thnx man!

Thse cars tend to shift late and keep higher RPMs on normal use; hand shifting into fifth over 50km/h and into 6th as soon as possibly improves fuel economy notably. 60mph (around 100km/h) is, in my experience, the best cruising speed for these cars for good fuel economy

Can't wait to try this on my 2011 S80 3.2 petrol motor to see if I get better mileage. In town driving I have only been averaging 15 to 16 mpg

I drove my xc70 2009 with an automatic transmission a few times to Siberia (9000km) pulling a heavy double axle closed trailer. Total weight around 6500kg!!
Consumption 10.2l/100km!! Of course in manual (6 gear) by 82km/u and use cruise control!

In diesel engines, a high amount of unburned hydrocarbon is accumulated in diesel particle filter as a result of continuous low RPM (low burning temperature) and this causes the filters to be clogged. Might this trick cause such a problem?

I've driven this way for some time now with my 2010 S80. I know the earliest time I can get in any gear, and when it'll automatically downshift. I can start in 3rd (not a lot of speed here, so I'll start in 1st or 2nd mostly) and shift into 4th at 21 MPG, 5th at 30 MPH, and 6th at 40 MPH. Then I can stay in 6th until it automatically downshifts at 32 MPH, then 5th at 25 MPH, 4th drops at 21 MPH, then I can stay in 3rd. I drive most time in "manual" mode.

I have 2010 auto s80 I not tried this changing gear's manually, on steering wheel it's got a cruise button with + & - is that same ,if so what is the part on gearstick that I can move across with a + & - wife just keeps in automatic all time, please explain

yes I figured this out on my s60 5D but throwing it in manual mode it goes into "S" sport with the 325lb and 215bhp is a barrel of laughs, by moving the shifter it goes into manual mode keeping the revs down can achieve improved mpg but its a bit of a chore looking at the rev counter/speed it really contradicts why you have the auto box in the first place

I'm definitely going to try that my volvo cabriolet is very thirsty. I know the weight of the roof and mechanism to lower it is weighty. I follow all your other tips ie.dont drive with electric seats on,cheek tires pressure. Thanks for the tip.

My D5 XC70 certainly holds on to lower gears when it need not. I sometimes use the "manual" mode to push it up a gear or two but am not in the habit of doing it. I will have to try using it more often, currently it is doing about 37mpg. I knew that an AWD automatic would have a fuel consumption penalty but did not expect it to be quite so bad. Not grumbling, just an observation, my Vectra C estate (manual) readily did 54mpg or better on a run. If the Volvo did 45 I would be delighted.

I found with my 2000 s40 t4 if you lift your foot a little it would select a higher gear and do they have a the winter pack on the s80 so you can turn the traction control off in snow and ice was very useful in Scotland

I have the a 2013 P3 and the auto gearbox is really annoying. It wants to change at 1200 rpm. I am worried that in time the egr will get clogged and I am trying to take the car regularly on a longer trip.

Clean the throttle the egr valve the MAF sensor and the map sensor it should make a difference

      Easy fix for the EGR.
Diassemble the valvebody assembly, clean it and install a blockoff plate 😉

The simplest way to save money is driving LPG.Half the fuel cost. If you are choosing the newer generations like the Prins VSI 2.0, you and your engine won't notice any difference at all.
